hey guys i am trying to lose some body fat so i can show the muscles in my body a bit more clearly, but i am just wondering what type of cardio training i should be doing. if im training on the treadmill would that just get rid of the fat on my legs or would it work my whole body. i know swimming is great for toning but im looking for machines in the gym that would tone all of my body. i'm not one for the water lol

Do some rowing in the gym. Start off with 5 mins a few times a week until you are used to it. Use a very light resistance and don't strain your back.

As you become more accustomed to the motion up the time to 10 minutes per session for a week, then try for 15 mins.

I found this a good way to tone up towards the being of this year. It is also a pretty good warm up if you want to do some running afterwards, as your heart rate will be medium high and you can start off at a decent clip on the threadmill or on the road home.

In general you cannot spot reduce fat, it will come off all over. There is a slight exception where a beer belly (male) and bottom (women) will go last.

Lifting weights (good form, but outside your comfort zone) will help to raise your metabolism for days after the session... which in turn builds muscle and chomps through calories.

This shows the muscles you'll use rowing, plus explains the technique.

also has to be said that for fat loss diet is probably the most important aspect, its very hard to out train a crap diet.

Don't reply saying, "I eat pretty well", what exactly have you eaten today so far?

A person you consider "toned" is probably lifting heavy weights. Pro swimmers have a the type of body I would desire, but I seriously doubt they get like that from swimming alone, just like sprinters do not get their bodies by sprinting.

Get lifting heavy weights, and not weight machines.

The word 'toning' in this context actually doesn't mean anything in and of itself and just confuses people cos when they use it they may not know what they actually want to achieve, or how it could be achieved. You can have varying degrees of muscle on your body, and varying degrees of fat. To achieve the 'toning' effect actually means stripping body fat to reveal the muscle underneath. If you don't have any fat or muscle then you need to build the muscle. If you have muscle with no fat then you are already muscular or 'toned':) If you are just fat, then 'toning' means losing the fat, and maybe building some muscle.
