Whey protein beginner

I just began a course of Whey protein yesterday, it is strawberry flavour but it tastes horrible. The directions say to mix 1-2 scoops with a few ounces of water, not very clear directions as there is no scoop provided and how do you measure an ounce of water. I just mixed some in a glass of water. It recommends using a blender (don’t have one) or a universal shaking bottle (what is that?) for max effectiveness. I can see why as it is difficult to mix properly. I took it after my work out yesterday evening and will probably only take it once a day. Will this be enough? Any other tips on how to measure the portion and mix it properly or any general tips or advise about using Whey would be much appreciated? Thanks

What brand is it? And where'd you get it?
Also, I find shakes with water disgusting - try milk instead?

And post up what weight and physical condition you are, what you do to work out, and what you hope to achieve. Then the peeps on here can help ya as to what to do and eat. Eating is the difference maker, IMO. No matter how hard I work out, I never see improvements unless my diet is spot on.

Not sure what brand it is but I will check this evening. I bought it in the sports nutrition shop in Galway, €45 and it has 75 servings.
I compete for the all Ireland division one Tug of War champions from Knockmore Co. Mayo, the season is run from April to September so we are off now. The training during the season is very intense, three team sessions a week. I felt weak during this season as we have to watch our weight gain (get stronger teams into lighter weights) plus the intense training I found that my muscles were loosing mass and not the opposite.
I am trying to build up the legs, core muscles and upper body during the off season. I find it hard to have a balanced diet as I can not get dinner at work. My normal day would be porridge at 7pm for breakfast, tea and scones at 11pm break, tea and sandwiches and fruit at 2pm lunch. I get home at 5.30pm, do a workout out on the stepper and some work on weights doing squats and some press-ups, sit-ups etc. Then I have the dinner which includes meat (chicken/steak/fish) at about 7pm. I know it’s a bit late for dinner but it’s the only way I can work it.

BTW I am tall and slim, 6 ft 2" and around 80kg.
So you recommend using milk...how do you mix it?

Sometimes the scoop is buried under the protein powder so you have to kinda dig around for it.

I usually just chuck a scoop in on top of 100ml of milk in a shaker, shake and drink. If you dont have one you can usually get one in the health food stores aswel as the sup store you goti t from

Argos also do shakers, for 10.99 I think. That said, usually a supplement store will chuck one in for free.

Holland and Barrett do shakers for around 6 or 7 euro I think.

10.99 seems like a rip off to me. I have two. Got one for 4.99, the other for free.

I wouldn't bother with the milk per smoothie if you are trying to keep weight down. Use water instead.

I know you didn't ask about your diet but it lacks in protein big time, hence why you are taking the shakes I suppose.

Ok well if you want to gain strength without gaining too much weight then I suppose Hanley, g'em and the other power lifters are the ones to give you the best advice as they live it

The brand is: Universal Nutrition Ultra Whey pro TWF
BTW I used milk last night and yes its is much nicer than using water!
Vegeta: You said that my diet seriously lacked protein, have you any suggestions how I could increase the protein intake via a 7pm breakfast, 20min tea break at 11 and half hour lunch at 2pm and dinner at 7pm.
I take the shake after my workout and about 25 min before dinner...is this a good idea?
I only have one serving per day...is that enough?
Is is ok to compensate for a lack of protein in my diet using these shakes?
I've heard of people having chest pains or in the long term kidney problems from using these shakes...is there any scientific evidence to suggest this?
Any other tips would be appreciated...Thanks.

decent enough brand but you can get better, and cheaper from local suppliers (www.irishlifting.com or www.pronutrition.ie)

lean meats, tins of tuna, hard-boiled (or soft-boiled or any cooking method) eggs...

post-workout is the time when your body will need easily accessible protein the most, so yes it's fine.

It depends. You need around a gram of protein per lb of body weight. One scoop of why has approx. 25-28g protein (depending on brand/ scoop size etc.) but ideally you get most of your protein through wholefoods like the meat, fish, nuts etc.
Is is ok to compensate for a lack of protein in my diet using these shakes?
not ideally, purely because you're missing out on the vitamins, minerals and other bonuses that wholefoods provide.

Rubbish. Unless you have a pre-existing kidney/ liver/ cardiac condition that could be exascerbated by excess protein consumption (ANY protein source would contribute though) you can drink protein till the cows come home and you'll pee out the excess. It's an expensive and time-wasting exercise though. Just eat a moderate amount of protein at every meal and you're sorted.

Can you recommend a better cheaper option...I would not know what would be a better option, the one I have has 75 servings and was 43 euro

I always liked Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Choc Mint. Vanilla was quite nice too, but stay away from the strawberry - it's rotten.

    I did?

IDS Belgian Chocolate is the best tasting whey I've ever had. There's better whey profiles out there but for deliciousness alone this wins hands down.
