My aim is fat loss. people have been telling me to eat more protein. Does this not help to gain weight as opposed to lose? Can someone please clear this up for me?

Eat more protein while maintaining a calorie deficit. Easiest way of doing this is by cutting down on carbs to compensate for the increased protein.

Made very simple: Protein and carbs are roughly the same calorie wise - about 4 kcals per gram. The thing is Protein is thermogenic, so it effectively causes your body to use more cals digesting it than it would with carbs. ALSO, protein is used to build muscle, so after exercise the extra cals added will go towards building muscle. Whereas any unused carbs will go on the belly. That's a very simplified account of what happens but keeping that in mind, you can kinda see why it's recommended.

Also AFAIK protein is more filling, so overall you eat less (although it's never stopped me, ha ha).

That sums it up nicely. That explains the beer belly effect some people manage.

What good sources of protein would u recommend to snack on??

There's also the fact that protein causes a much weaker insulin response than carbohydrate - that is it does not raise blood sugar levels as much, meaning that less insulin is released to bring blood sugar back down. This is a good thing as it means less storing of fat (insulin is a storage hormone).

Here is a good article to explain further:

It's crazy how more people don't know about this stuff. The fact that the standard food pyramid shows carbs at the top (70% of all food types) doesn't help either. Hidden agendas at work.....
