Spelt Bread/Flour?

I have been advised to go on to Spelt Bread for dietery/health reasons.

At some point I guess I'll bake it myself, but as with everything new it would help if I got to buy a ready-made loaf first.

Anybody know of a store that sells this Spelt Bread?

    Convenient locations to me:

Lucan, Clonee, Dunboyne, Maynooth & Blanchardstown.

    Thanks!

Most health shops have it. I would guess most holland & barret stores would have it. These days supermarkets might have it, but probably in the organic/health section , maybe not with the normal flour.

There is a health shop in Maynooth that I know certainly sells it.

Its gorgeous bread, quite rich tasting tbh. I'd recommened making it if you can. It can be quite expensive in shops.

I've seen it in a few health food shops but also in dunnes a few times, some specialty type of bread that's fairly high in fiber (and I can't remember the name of) and another in cheaper normalish loaf. You might find sprouted spelt bread in health food shop though. I've found it quite heavy so don't be put off if that's the only one you can get, the other spelt breads can be quite nice, especially the home baked ones.

Another thing to look out for is spelt pasta, it's really nice and feels a bit lighter on the stomach than cheap standard pasta.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yep, the health stores either had the flour or very expensive vacuum packed Spelt products that were pretty expensive.. so it's off a baking I go!

Blazing salads spelt bread is quite lovely, if you can get your hands on it.
It cost E3-something a loaf so not cheap, but the spelt flour isnt cheap either.
Mind you, if you can, the health food shop at the end of the main street in Celbridge sells the spelt flour for a lot cheaper than the health food shop in Maynooth.
And yes, the homemade one is yummy, esp with sesame seeds on top :)

I really can't recommend Blazing Salads breads enough. They are just delicious. They are around 3 euro but they last ages and are incredibly filling. My favourite is 100% Rye Sourdough. Wheat, dairy and sugar free.

Do you mind me asking why you were reccomended spelt as a grain in particular?

Make your own. I've been making my own for a while and it's just as tasty as brown soda bread and you'd never guess it was wheat free. The superquinn one is good but a tad expensive. I didn't really like the blazing salads one. I gave up trying other wheat free breads as they are expensive and usually quite bland.

I found an online store, they also have a shop in Blackrock - http://www.organicsupermarket.ie. Has anyone bought anything from here? I was thinking of buying some flour in bulk, as I think delivery is cheaper this way.

Does anyone have any experience with buckwheat? I want to start baking my own bread and was interested in trying both spelt and buckwheat.

I have physically bought stuff in the shop but not online, but can totally recommend them as a bricks and mortar store anyway. Top people :) They are on facebook as well and sometimes do offers and competitions and stuff.

    Here's a great recipe for spelt bread : http://goo.gl/r7BMF

    and here's one without yeast : http://goo.gl/vNd36

I've made the first one, but not the second.

Wholeground organic spelt flour (brand name is Dove's Farm) is always available in my local Tesco, in the same section as all the other flours and bread making stuff.

+1 for the Dunnes spelt bread (they also do spelt with seeds which is delicious). It's the ABC range.

    Hi you all,

Is there still a health food store in Maynooth somewhere? I just went to the one by the square/main street one time, and it doesn't seem to be there anymore?, I just noticed when driving by one time.

I live in the West Dublin area and I am looking for health food stores where I can go to..so I don't necessarily need to go to the city centre. I guess the ones in the city centre have the biggest selections, like Down to Earth, Health matters, Nourish,..

I know about the Health store in Liffey Valley shopping centre, I find though that they don't have such a big selection as the ones in the city centre or others.
I also know the one in Leixlip, I think though they don't have much food choice?

Does anyone know of any others in the Lucan/Palmerstown/Leixlip/Celbridge/Maynooth area?

I am also looking for more health food stores which sell fresh bread..I just know of The Hopsack in Rathmines and Blazing Salads in Dublin city centre so far.

    Thanks for any information.

Spelt flour has gone very scarce and very expensive, baking emporium in west cork do a load of different spelt breads and not daft prices, might not be much use to ye in greater Dublin but they've a van going up to Dublin once a week..
I'm making spelt pizza bases lately, very easy (less stiff than wheat ) and I'm able to freeze any spare...
