When did you first get your glasses?

I got them when I was about eight. I hated them, and I tried to avoid wearing them. I even went to the cinema without them once, because I hated them (had to borrow my dad's glasses to see:o). I've since come to accept them.
While looking at a family video recently, my mother apologised for forcing those glasses on me. They would have embaressed Harry Potter.

When did you first get glasses, and did you mind?

Just start wearing em two years ago last October (I was 23)... although admitededly I likely should've been wearing them two years earlier!

I can't stand them, still can't - and hate to be thought of as a "glasses wearer"! Arrogant as that sounds...

Going to get my peepers lasered next month and hopefully these damn things will be history!

I was in my late teens (about 10years ago).

I don't need to wear them all the time luckily, as they are wholly impractical for work and the science boffins that there are still haven't quite come up with a contact lens to fit my degree of stygmatism.

But at the same time I don't mind wearing them at all. Most of my family wear them. My brother is half blind without them. My mum has always worn them and mosre recently my dad has had to get reading glasses.

Had them since I was about..... 5 or 6? We had a hearing & sight test in school...
I came home telling my mother I was blind and deaf in one eye lol.. (I had slight hearing problems at the time too).

Had to wear a patch on my 'lazy' eye.. I HATED that ...

Wear glasses 24/7 - feels odd without them actually now. Couldn't get contacts til few years ago because they didn't do them in my strength - but then I'd dry eyes so I haven't yet tried. Plus I'd need a hard contact for the left eye - stigmatism thingy.. or something.
I can't look through microscopes / binoculars with both eyes, I get two pictures, they won't merge.

    I'm a happy glasses wearer though :)
(and yes shock on shock, I had Deirdre Barlow glasses when I was younger lol...god the shame!!)

When I was 16, in 6th year in school. I should have been wearing them a lot sooner than that but hated the idea of wearing glasses. If I had I might have done better in school as I'd have actually been able to see the blackboard!

Wearing them nearly 25 years now and I don't even notince them any more, although I broke a lens last week for the first time ever which really ruined my day.

I think I was 12 or 13 when I first got mine. I only wore them when none of my friends were about (because I hated them). I eventually started wearing them for tv, reading things off the blackboard and the like. Since may I've been wearing them all the time.

I really like them now and everyone I know thinks they suit me so it's all good.

I was about 7 when I first got a pair of glasses, I could have gotteh them earlier, but they didn't make a huge difference to my eyesight so there wasn't much point 'til I was a bit older.

I got contact lenses this year for the first time. I can't get them in my prescription, but I get them in a lower strength for playing rugby, I played for three years without them, so it was more to see if I could get them rather than needing them.

Never minded wearing glasses, I've had a few dodgy pairs over the years, but they're a part of who I am at this stage, so I can get glasses that suit my personality these days too so that helps :)

I was 9. Since I was 14ish, I've alternated between contacts and glasses. My current glasses really suit me, so I love them. I'm almost scared to get laser surgery!

About 10-11 and they were those ugly plastic rimmed ones:o, my taste (gradually) improved and I'm quite happy with them now.

Went through a phase of contact lens wearing, although working in a lab now doesn't allow for that anymore:(

Edit: what's with age 10 not being an option on the poll anyway? Does everyone go through a stage of 20/20 version then;)

I first got glasses when I was around 10. Like some of the other people here it was simply for seeing the blackboard at the time, but slowly I started using them for tv, then eventually after I got sick of mistakingly calling after people who were a good bit up the road (i.e. walking ahead of me) I decided to start wearing them full-time when I was around 15 or so.

    Short sighted am I.

14 yo - prescription was for -1 both eyes which has since deteriorated to -1.5 (now 19 yo). Only ever used them for sport and class-rooms at the time though - now I wear them always, kind of comfort factor or something, dunno :)

Wearing em since I was 7 and 14 years on I have only got worse. Don't resent them but alter between glasses and contacts. Do plan on getting the laser eye thing done sometime down the road when I started earning some real money!!! :D:):D

I was 10 when I got my first glasses but I'd say I needed them much younger than that. I remember having to sit with my face stuck right in front of the tv to see it. I was mortified at the glasses.. pointy at the ends they were. I only wore them in class and wathing telly though I really should have been wearing them all the time. I got contact lenses at 17 and my first "cool" glasses at 19. Full time necessity now as I can't even see my hand in front of me without them.

I got my first glasses when I was in fifth class, if I remember correctly.

I got them when I was 7 or 8 and been wearing them ever since.

I've had those silly circular ones at first but I've moved onto rimless glasses which I ****ing hate cos the screw is always coming loose.

    Solid frames ftw.

When I was two! Used to hate wearing them. Still take them off for photographs and stuff! May need a further op to correct the slight turn in my right eye.

I got mine when I was 8, I think I wanted them coz my brother got them and I thought they were cool so i probably wrecked my own eyesight!! ah no all of my family and extended family wear glasses so it was expected!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 123 ✭✭BreeVdK

I think I was about 5 when I got glasses. I absolutely hated them as I was the only one wearing them in my class and because my parents made a big deal about me wearing them. Still hate the idea I need them.

10, ish. I hated them. They were massive. I've slowly gotten more short sighted over the years, and now need my glasses 24/7 (well when I'm awake anyways), or else the world has a funny fuzzy drunken glow

I got mine when i was 8 and I hated them, it wasn't that I hated wearing glasses but the frames my mum had bought for me were just awful.

I got contacts when I was about 16 and I wear them most of the time now although I don't mind wearing my glasses as much any more coz I have a nice frame now!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

I think I probably need stronger glasses actuallly, i went to vote in the poll and thought it said 10 years ago or less so I picked the wrong option..oops!! :o

I got mine when I was 11 or 12....need them constantly now. Sometimes they're a pain in the arse when I get really tired but other than that I don't mind them. I've considered getting contacts on a few occasions I need Toric lenses and I just wasn't bothered and stuck with glasses.

I know i was less than 10 and was mad about superman at the time so i loved gettin glasses (oh the innocence) cos i play both clark kent and superman more efficiently!

I was also the first boy in my class to wear glasses.

No girls kissed me for years!

When I was 17. I didn't like wearing them then, and I don't like wearing them now, but there you go.

Probably shouldn't be here cos I don't wear glasses, but maybe I could get some advice -my daughter is wearing glasses since she was 18months old, she is now 14 and really resents them, takes them off whenever she can - but she really cannot see without them - my question, will she ever grow out of this or will she always resent them.

Her prescription is strong, so I think contacts are out for her, as is laser :(

I have always let her choose her own frames, as she is the one who has to wear them, so they are trendy, and might I add, beautiful on her.

Got my first pair of glasses at about 18 months old!:) Apparently I didn't mind them at all. I had to wear patches on and off till I was about 6 for a lazy eye as well.

Wore them full time until I went through a phase in my teens where my optician kept giving me glasses that seemed too strong and gave me headaches so I stopped wearing them for ages! Ended up somehow developing double vision because of the eye strain which cannot be gotten rid of and which most glasses seem to make worse.

It took me years to find an option that could manage to get me glasses that didn't make things worse. I still can only wear them for tv, blackboard and driving etc but their such a godsend compared to those years I spent without any.

I've been wearing mine since I was 4 - 22 glorious years. Started off with nice steel-rimmed jobs, but a bad fall at about 7 years of age smashed 'em and left my face quite badly scarred (though it's faded with time) so it was on to the giant plastic rims and thick thick plastic lenses of the 80s for me!

I've one lazy eye so I'd to wear a patch for a couple of years, which I hated. Didn't like wearing glasses either, 'cos I was the only one in my class who did.

I'm pretty lucky though - by the time I was 17 my eyesight had improved enough that I now only have to wear them for reading/watching tv/working on the computer - I used need them 24/7.

Managed to smash one pair and completely lose the other in the last month, so splashed out on my first new glasses in about 6 years the other day. Feeling quite swanky now - apparantly glasses became fashionable and I didn't know!
