Inspired by High Fidelity (only the book though, I think), boredom, and study evasion, let's all contribute a list!

In HF, theirs were: Simple Minds; Michael Bolton; U2; Bryan Adams; Genesis

    For me, it would be
    Hard-Fi
    Good Charlotte
    Razorlight
    The Killers
    Babyshambles

    Kaiser Chiefs
    Hard Fi
All Chris Brown / Usher types (they are all so generic they only count as one in my book)
Jonny Borrell (Its unfair to blame the rest of the band)
    Babyshambles

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭the hero game

    - yeah the kaiser chiefs too but just for that appalling song 'ruby' alone
    - damien rice for giving blokes with acoustic guitars a bad name, check out damien jurado, mark kozelek or a million others instead

and garth bloody brooks for bleeding the soul of country music dry, well there's a whole galaxy of whores who have done that, but lets pick on garth.. thank christ for the likes of gram parsons, emmylou harris, lucinda williams, gillian welch etc.

Garth Brooks recently became the biggest selling artist of all time...

I'll try to find some original examples:

    - Keane

I tend to subconciously filter all that crap so this is actually pretty hard... let me think of some stuff I found on a colleague's /Music folder once...

    - Snow Patrol, i was once a fan
    - Westlife, since they won't go away. Too easy I know...
    - Kanye West
    - Each of the Black Eyed Peas

Once it starts coming the hate flows freely :)

i'm not sure snow patrol were even good before they became slickly-produced-big-chorus-to-make-the-girls-cry-unit-shifters..

I have to agree on this. I hate most of the bands / singer song writers that come out of this country. A more bland and trite scene you could not find anywhere. Friends will always ask me to go see the latest next big Irish band and they will always be pants. Seriously if you think the Frames are an amazing band you obviously dont listen to much music. Same goes for Bell XI. I mean what the hell are Bell XI songs about anyway. Marshmellows WTF. Rant over.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭the hero game

bell XI - exactly honcho!.. the singer is such a prat, and the lyrics are terrible.. it all just sounds really insincere and lazy.. shame 'cause some of their actual music isn't that bad.. have to stick up for the frames for the album 'for the birds' alone tho', some v. good songs on that, but i don't like 'em overall..

Ooh, some good ones there, can't believe I completely forgot about The Kooks and James Blunt who I would say are worse than my latter three...

    green day too, a*seholes

U2 specifically Bono - What a holier than thou preachy f***er

50 cent, Snoop Dogg etc - OK you have alot of money, "bitches" love you and you own alot of shiny cars, thats great now shut the **** up. What happened to hip hop acts like Jurassic 5, A tribe called quest? Snoop et all really have become a parody of themselves.

All those responsible for cheesey dance songs

Bono once more, just to make sure the job is done

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭kryptyk500

    Elton John
    Moby
    Manic Street Preachers
    The Eagles
    Anastasia

it's tough to limit yourself to only 5...I could do this all day!

I forgot to mention The Feeling - they should be included for the following lyrics:

'I love it when you call
but you never call at all'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 861 ✭✭✭deaddonkey

let's just make this a list of irish artists, add radiohead, and leave it at that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

    in the A&I category:

    arctic monkeys
    babyshambles
    snow patrol (recently)
    green day
    kate nash

    other:
    kanye west
    justice
    tiesto
    pretty much all commerical hiphop
    daft punk

kaiser chiefs, hard fi, james blunt, the frames, the thrills

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭binhead

I don't know how radiohead, the manics, daft Punk or Justice made it onto the hate list??

But I absolutely agree with all the others.

and if I had to pick one, Just one.

    It would be Hard Fi.

    hands down. Click.

Also....Someone mentioned Bellend1 and their rubbish lyrics, well you know that bit in that song when he's trying to get all campfire on us and singing about toasting marshmallows? well listen to it again, he doesn't say "toast marshmallows" he says "Toss my salad" Harping back to the old prison sports maybe? I dunno, but thats what i hear and thats what I sing out loud in front of Bellend 1 fans.

Does anyone actually like hard-fi? Everyone i know (including myself) hates them. Who's buying their records?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,854 ✭✭✭Sinfonia

    Shít, ok, new list

    Hard-Fi
    Good Charlotte
    The Feeling
    The Kooks
    James Blunt

(also, this shouldn't necessarily be restricted to Alt/Indie, but it would just get too broad and crazy in the music forum IMO. I think we're all snobbish enough here to come up with decent lists :p)

Yeah, that's right, ruin music for everyone because you don't get it ^_^

Is this just an alt indie revolution or what? I'd have every R'n'B artist post-1980 shot and we could just start Rhythm & Blues all over again before it simply meant Black people making pop music.

tbh they do a decent job of that themselves:eek:

    sorry binhead,
i want to second the manics one, cretins from day one

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,391 ✭✭✭arbeitsscheuer

    James Blunt
    Kanye West
    Pete Doherty
    Paddy Casey
    Lily Allen

It's tough though. There are so many I had to leave out, just to prioritise the above-mentioned cretinous b*stards... Currently Leona Lewis is gettin on my wick, if she keeps up this vein of form she'll be on the bullet-in-the-head list pretty soon!

    Maroon 5
    The Eagles
    Mundy Rice Bastardin' Casey
    KT Tunstall
Pink Floyd (and any dreadlocked plankton that play "wish you were here" at any party I'm present at)

I know that last one might mean my being banned from this board as I'm in a minority but I hate those guys. I hate those guys so very very much.

"Mundy Rice Bastardin' Casey" - i love that
re. pink floyd, am i allowed to think about the reverend bob marley in the same way?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 Liberty Belle

Of course THG. We shouldn't like music just because the purists tell us we should.

I would concur, but unfortunately "Stir it up" puts my girlfriend in a very happy mood. And he's already dead.

But dig him up and shoot him again just to make sure if you dislike him as much as I dislike the floyd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,854 ✭✭✭Sinfonia

    And he's already dead.
    A good point.

I should add that in the book, Rob tells us that "Barry wanted to shoot the Beatles, but I pointed out that someone had already done it."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

    Snow Patrol[mainly for this album]
    U2[They have always been ****e, and Bono's a hypocrite]
Babyshambles[just don't see how they deserved the more sucess over Dirty Pretty Things who, granted got some sucess of the whole 'Libertines' thing, but at least are a good ****ing band]
Anyone who has ever had the label 'gangsta rap' applied to them...NWA are mainly to blame!
Iron Maiden[Bruce has one of the worst voices I've ever heard]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

    A&I

coldplay - gah. i liked their first album somewhat, but then i got bored of it.
pete doherty - christ how anyone can stand listening to him is beyond me, i'd prefer listening to nails on a chalkboard.
dashboard confessional - christ almighty this guy has serious problems. listening to his lyrics makes me want to top myself.
Hard-fi - all i'll say is "CASH MACHINNNEEEE cha".
enter shikari - worst band ever tbh.

    non A&I list

my chemical romance - "we're not emo we swear".
amy winehouse - where she come from and why do people like her voice?
pete doherty - so crap he makes the list twice.
    the gossip - ugh.
mika - we've got it, you can hit high notes, no need for a full song sung like you're constantly kicked in your repressed balls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭the hero game

    "he's already dead"...
er, i should have considered that in my reasoning alright..!
but u get the point.. :)

I love this thread. People are really venting.

I have to agree on Bob Marley and im glad to find someone else who feels the same way I do about him. I just dont get his music and its appeal. And yes I do enjoy the odd joint but id rather be listening to something interesting rather than the boring dross Bob Marley produced in his career. And dont even get me started on the output of his bastard children.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭the hero game

"yes I do enjoy the odd joint but id rather be listening to something interesting rather than the boring dross Bob Marley produced in his career"

    absolutely Honcho..

    any other scared cows?

i just don't get bob dylan as much as i've tried.. and yes i've heard it all.. i don't think he should be shot or anything i just don't get it..

and as for the beatles!.. i know they were ground-breaking, i know that they are the most influential band ever, i know you have to appreciate them in the context of the time blah blah but there's not one song by them i actually like.. & plenty that annoy the **** out of me..

more recently, i don't get the fascination with primal scream, even 'screamadelica' seems like pants to me..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 Liberty Belle

    YES!!! Dylan and the Beatles.

The Beatles in particular. Am sure they were groundbreaking at the time and politically and culturally important but dear god I'd rather watch that godawful Hollyoaks rather than put on any of their albums at home.

And Dylan is just a bitter old hippy who sings through his nasal passage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 313 ✭✭Ho-Hum

Yeah gotta agree with hero game about Primal Scream, them and Happy Mondays are more than a little bit crap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,854 ✭✭✭Sinfonia

While we're on a "don't need to shoot them, but never got them" buzz, I really never got/liked Joy Division.
Especially Love Will Tear Us Apart...people go on about how great it is, I find it beyond boring

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

    5 to shoot.

Travis- for making some of the blandest most boring sh1te of recent times.
James Blunt- there'd be a queue of people willing to put the bullet in this guy.
Ronan Keating- I hardly need to explain this one.
Pete Doherty- talentless, toneless and tasteless. Only problem is the bullet would probably refuse to go near the smelly fcuker.
Shakira- her voice is like scraping your fork on a dry plate. I could shoot her and then have sex with her dead body* as a little bonus. :D

*before anyone calls the cops, me not normally in the habit of getting it on with dead bodies

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭kryptyk500

Madness - never liked 'em. Suggs is particularly annoying too.

George Michael - just give up, please. Nobody cares anymore.

KT Tunstall - oohh...she's so quirky..especially the way she spells Katie as 'KT'!!

Pearl Jam - 'We are so anti-corporate, anti-Ticketmaster blah blah blah..' - shame your music is such a pile of mouldy tripe.

Blur - I know they are 'dead', but has there ever been a band made up of such annoying tossbags?? And the music was dreadful too.

Seconded. Actually, the "don't need to shoot them, but never got them" buzz is actually much more interesting - there are a litany of bands that I've tried to like, either cos my mates recommended them or cos I liked the general direction of the band, but just didn't enjoy listening to when all was said and done.

For some stupid reason none actually spring to mind right now... ARGH! Hate when that happens... Fcuk it, Joy Division will do for now anyway.

never liked Bob Marley or Pink Floyd either!!! It's like people can only admit these things in secret!!! Another 1: Ian Brown. I like one or 2 Stone Roses songs but I just don't get Ian Brown.....

Ooh yes, The View - they are despicable.

This thread is starting to turn into a "I can't understand all the fuss about x"-type one. That's not the point of it - only pick bands who you absolutely HATE!!!
Paddy Casey - oh god how I loathe him
    Mundy
    The Frames
    Damien Rice
    David Gray

Now that I've woken up I'll continue:
    Wet Wet Wet
    The Cranberries
Green Day ("punk" - what the ****?)
    Avril Lavigne

    Mika
    The Scissor Sisters.
Pure inoffensive, asexual karaoke that grannies would love. But they think they're pushing the envelope because they're camp. At least Frankie Goes to Hollywood genuinely did shock people (the video for Relax is pretty risque stuff for 1983/84 - The Scissor Sisters wouldn't dream of doing anything similar today). Even Boy George was edgy compared to those twats.

just on the irish 'artists' mentioned above, can i be bold and add fionn regan to that?.. i saw lucinda williams last night and he was supporting and christ i just thought he was so boring and contrived.. what's all the fuss about?.. and what's worse, lucinda came on and said she's a great champion of his music and he's great and all.. i just don't get it..
