Favourite / Least favourite thing about being from Wicklow

We've all been in sutuations where in conversation someone says " so where are you from", responding Wicklow can receive responses as varied as 'sheep sh*ggers to 'west brits'.

But I'm proud to be from wicklow! I almost get boastful about it in turn.
(scenery, accessability, higher property values etc)

So I ask... what is peoples favourite (and least favourite) thing about the county we call home

for me: Fave = the scenery and countryside
least fave = wicklow never winning a senior all ireland :D

    favourite thing; the sheep
least favourite thing: the traffic :(

Favourite - The scenery. The drive down the coast road to Greystones has some absolutely stunning views. I really miss living in Greystones for that reason alone.

Least Favourite - has to be the commute. Even from Bray, it takes an inordinate amount of time to get into the city centre.

Favourite thing - Yep, the scenery. Well we're not called the Garden County for nothing :D

Least - used to be the commute but I work from home now, so least favourite, all the Dubs that moved in here, lol (ok, my folks are Dubs, but they've been here nearly 40yrs !!)

Spank, I'm a bit like you in the sense that I have "boasted" about Wicklow before !! I often boast that we were the last county to be taken over by the English too, that always shuts them up.

least favourite = wicklow have never won any major sporting event and people from Dublin who tell me that i am really from Dublin and that Wicklow is just a Dublin want to be country

favourite = the scenry, the fact that you be right beside the sea, in the country, surround by mountains and only 30 mins from Dublin (well my part of wicklow anyway)

    I AM A WICKLA WOMAN AND PROUD:D

The N11 nearly all the way to wexford is Motorway. Loughlinstown to wexford in an hour is possible. Other than that it would have to be the mountains and tiglin and the rivers and lakes and the pubs in glendalough and about the mountains,There is so many pituresque places in wicklow and further south the people are friendlier and the towns have a good athmosphere and there is brittas bay although north wicklow has no Sports for the working class.

Haha, good one!! The N11 is motorway from Loughlinstown to just past Bray, then dual carriageway to Rathnew, then a lethal narrow winding road all the way to Arklow, then dual carriageway to just past Gorey, then single carriageway all the way to Wexford!

Do you own a plane, or maybe a helicopter?

Least: the cost of a taxi from town :(

Favourite: I do love the harbour in Bray, gotta love those swans!!

    Lol

I have a very fast bike.Much faster than a helicopter. I have provided a link to explain this. There is a substanially better road system today than only 10 years ago. Your joking if you havent noticed that. The N11 while not complete is still a very good road compared to the average of the other 32 counties.Comparitively the N11 is a good road for the county and connects directly to the M50. It is classed as a dualcarriageway or a motorway as to the quality and size of the constuction Wikipedia.
The N1,M1, M11 and N11 form part of the E1 Trans European route which runs from Larne in Northern Ireland via Dublin down the East coast of Ireland to the Iberian Peninsula via Lisbon and ending at Seville in Southern Spain and as such is an important Road for the county and asset for the economy of wicklow. Wexford is only 50 miles from louglinstown to the border of wexford. The bus would nearly get you there in an hour. Fly away now.

    That's very true!!

my poor dog won't get out of the car if we go down there because when she was a pup 7 years ago she tried to make friends with the swans! They hissed and flapped their wings and chased her, was quite hilarious!!:D

Least Favorite : 1) People say ah yes Greystones, you are not really from Wicklow, you are a wannabe Dub.

    2) The waste of a good field by the GAA, that could be used for more houses. Most people in Greystones think Gaelic Games are Irish people playing rugby.

    3) Travelling miles to a Cinema, just because owners think they can knock down the local fleapits and build apartments.

Thing I like : 1) The Greystones Harbour while it lasts
    2) The Mountains
    3) Brittas Bay
    4) Most of the people

Don't get me started on the transport. Years of work and we still only have dual carriageways in this country.

Yes thanks for proving my point! I too have a very fast bike. It however is unable to achieve average speeds which can match the journey speed of a helicopter (>150mph). It's not my fault, it's those pesky corners! How dare God create this land with hills!

Euro Route 1 has always covered Belfast to Rosslare. That is only a route designation, it is not a description of the quality of the roads it covers.

The M11 covers 0.8km. The dual carriageway stretches of the N11 cover around a total of 60 km. The other HALF of the the road is a single two way road going through towns and villages.

Loughlinstown to Wexford is 124km. 56km of that is the distance from Arklow to Loughlinstown. This morning's traffic took 1 hour and 10 minutes to cover that distance. I ain't speculating, this is what happens.

    56 km = 70 minutes
    124km = ???

    Do the maths.

You fly away now while traffic sits bumper to bumper on the superhighway running along the entire east coast!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 226 ✭✭SlinkyToo

Sounds likes someone works for the ministry of transport. Looks we have never had it so good.

If only I could make use of this new system instead of the pesky OLD M11/M50 that I use where it takes 45 minutes to get from Sandyford to Greystones.

No matter what roads we have, we will always have traffic jams until Irish Drivers learn how to drive properly.

?? I like the N11 and that is my choice, If you want to get technical I will race you to wexford on it otherwise heat your turbines and jetison to the RSA with your complaints. I can only put my hand up and say I worked on the motorway, I cant say I took bribes and ran a pencil across some map, nor did I chain myself to a tree.

True if the N11 south of Bray is a dual carriageway then the reason there are digging up the M50 is they forgot to put in an extra lane to make it technically a motorway. I cant see a difference other than the techincal fact that the N11 was designed to be more narrow due to an enhanced feature of modern road design which was does less damage to the environment and takes less land.

Fav thing about living in wicklow would be the mountains, forests, nature, rivers, pubs, food, in that order.

Least fav thing... is the driving habits of people who seem to always turn off for Charlesland/Greystones/Delgany.

Driving habits full stop. L Plates and Hazard Lights aplenty.

I thought BMW drivers in the UK were knobends but my god they are surgically enhanced dickheads over here.

It seems the older your beamer the bigger the attitude.

The Wicklow Gap... the most beautiful spot in Ireland!! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭pirelli

The Gap is barren and the weather is cooler with the clouds rolling in very low at the crossroads. The road along Kippure is almost the border of dublin while the military road is the highest public road in the country.

To the 'Where are you from?' question I can bet on getting one of three responses:

    1. Jaysus... sheep shaggers... boggers.... wickla.... blah, blah, blah. We've all heard it!

    2. Wow! Where in Wicklow? I love it there... do you live near X... have you gone to Y.....

    3. God.... and you drive 'up here' (D4) every day? How long does that take you? (They are referring to the fact that they seem to think Wicklow is located somewhere around Cork and not the traffic nightmare that is the N11)

My favourite thing? Too many to list. I love it... in the future when I can eventually afford to buy a place of my own (ha!) I would stay in Wicklow... around the area I live in now (just not in it!).

The least favourite thing? Working in Dublin generally means socialising in Dublin... and this can be an expensive expedition! A taxi from D4 - straight down the N11 - outside 'peak traffic hours' is €80 as quoted to me last week (before I keeled over - good job the alcohol numbed the pain of forking it over). There is the option of various nitelinks and taxis, etc, which is great if you are in a group.... but not for a single person standing in the dark waiting for a taxi that may or may not turn up!
Yeah... I could probably just sum it up with lack of proper public transport and traffic chaos.

Fantastic!!: - Best county ever especially my home town of which I love!! it is near enough to Dublin to have all the facilities of the capital city, yet it is far enough away to be in the country, the sea, mountains, scenery, etc. I think there is no better place to live, but supposed am biased, as grew up here and there is "no place like home"....
Also, it is very accessible now to everywhere with the N11 linked up to the M50, etc. :D:D

Bad: - commuting to town....AWWWWFUL - I hate it! A lot to be said for working locally! and getting home from town comfortably on a night out without breaking the bank! I cannot think of anything else I don't like about the county! (Oh... and maybe the harbour being changed in Greystones) :(:(

Favourite thing about it: It's Home!

Least favourite thing.. they way people can't say Wicklow or Arklow without replacing the ow with an a and sound like they've their nose pinched. Also the lack of anything to do in my hometown for my age group!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭Qs

Best: Its rural but close enough to Dublin to go to gigs, shops, etc

Worst: That the fact its close to Dublin means a) its full of blow ins and b) I've to commute

    Oh and house prices.

best thing about Wicklow.. its not Dublin

Worst thing.. its close enough for Dublin people to visit cos they love it... then they slag about living there..(bit of an ol' contradiction I think)
