Whey protein isolates

I am bewildered, I started by reading this link:
    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/tietge9.htm

I wanted to find out a little more about Whey protein. I have been taking ON Gold standard whey for the last year or two. I find it very good really, everyone I have ever asked about it thinks its a solid economy protein powder, top seller etc. so I can't be going too far wrong there.

    A few things I'm after:

    1. I want a protein without any artificial flavours, colours etc. I'd also like a good whey with no flavour at all.
    2. Are there better economy whey proteins out there than the ON? It would appear so but why is ON still outselling them all?
    3. What about designer proteins? Are they worth the money? It seems most people don't bother with them. It would appear that they are not marketed in Ireland at all. What is the story with whey protein isolates? What brands are good? Why do some brands sell better than others despite having a poorer protein profile in their whey? I think I would need a whole weekend of internet research to begin to get my head around this one.

Anyone been down this road before care to have their say?

www.bulkpowders.co.uk has the cheapest unflavoured whey I have seen. It still has a flavour though.
ON outsells for similar reasons as why coke is a good seller, though tesco value coke can be got for 1/5 the price- branding, loyalty, quality, taste etc.

They are overly expensive to most, there come a point you draw the line, I do not think grey goose vodka is worth the €45 price tag, though it is good. Pro atheletes who could earn an extra €1m for a 0.1% increase in performance will fork out the extra.

At the moment I make a post-workout shake with the whey protein from bulkpowders.co.uk - mixed with glucose, maltodextrin, water and sometimes a little vitamin c.

The end result tastes very much like milk in my opinion - but a little sweeter and tastier.

How do you know the quality of the stuff you get from bulkpowders.co.uk is ok/good?

I have seen surveys and tests done on the major american brands. I know ON generally come are very strong on quality.
