    Howdy folks,
my boxing coach has us doing bodyweight exercises as part of training:
the ones I ave problems with are push ups, squat thrusts and tricep dips. I'm planning on doing them at home to get more used to them but I was just wondering how often I should do them?
    thanks

    As much/many as you want.

Not trying to be smart about it - but do as much or as little as you want if it fits your goals. You're starting boxing? Your best option is to check out some of Ross Enamait's stuff - not sure if I'm allowed to plug other sites on here so mods feel free to snip this www.rosstraining.com/forum

There is (or should be) more than one side to your training. The strength (power, explosive, endurance, functional etc) and conditioning are the key things to work on for the minute. But then you need to balance that with the actual boxing skill, technique and sparring (cannot stress the importance of this).

Resistance training or pure bodyweight? Use both - don't limit yourself to one training modality.

Here's a link with a load of workout logs - most of them are combat athletes ... just to give you some ideas.

What's your present fitness like? Are you at it long?

The guy at the gym told me I'm "pretty fit" when I first joined up,
I'm fast and light but pretty skinny

I go to the gym 3 times a week and boxing once a week but I feel a bit odd finding bodyweight exercises so tough. Normally strength ones, I can do situps and jog well enough to keep up with the pace the boxing coach sets

When I started doing push-ups I could barely do 7...I now do 50...or 2 sets of 30 and 25 reps in the middle of a weights workout so that my body is already extremely knackered...thus when I do push-ups it requires that extra 10-15% out of the bag!

my advice,do as many push-ups as you can followed 30 secs later by 20 squat thrusts....then repeat....and take ONLY 30-60 second breaks between ex's!

I don't wanna be a smart arse, but if it's an option then I imagine more boxing training woudl be far more beneficial to your development as a figther than more time in the gym.

Yeah, I enjoy it more too,
I see what your saying but boxing is only on once a week,
I do the gym in between

    get a speed rope

Punch bags too maybe...though I think heavy bag work is classed as impact training, which takes longer to recover from than resistance training, so be careful not to overdo it.

Obviously you wouldn't want to overdo sparring or you'd end up punch-drunk.

Bodyweight exercises are great because they're so humbling. You'll get guys who are pretty strong (a muscular component of strength) but get them to do 10 gold standard push ups and they'll shake like a leave.

I don't 3x/wk is overdoing it. You could do with another boxing session in there as well, is there another club around you could train in or would that be disrespectful to your current coach?

get them to do 10 gold standard push ups
Hi Colm- have you any links to a video showing somebody doing "gold standard" pushups.

I can lash them out and can manage 75-80 tops, if I do them slow and in certain styles I can only manage around 6!

Push Up Standards vid (wmv / mov )

PDF of push up standards and common cheats

Here's some vids of us doing a nice humbling WoD a while ago, keeping strict tabs on the push ups. As you can see, after doing Bodyweght squats for max reps, your push ups go to pot!
