Recently overheard a very heated argument on the bus by two teenagers talking about how one of them had been called a n***er by some girl.
While trying to blank out their shouting i heard the girl say "sure what would she know she's only a paddy?"

thought it was a big hypocritical to call someone a paddy after roaring the bus down cos she was called an offensive name.

I know its not the same thing but....Did i have a right to feel a little offended??

i've never found it offensive personally. usually find it funny more then anything else, though i'd imagine the context is important. if you're alone in london and facing a bunch of louts calling you a "paddy" it might be offensive then. though in that situation they could call you anything...

The very fact that race has to enter your mind when you hear a word just proves that deep down inside, you yourself are a little racist. Shame on you OP, shame on you.

How was it not sexist? Bitch when used in the context you used it in, is a common derogatory term for a female, which is derived from African American culture.

Whereas when used in the context you usually hear it in, it has a slightly different meaning ... :D:p

Seriously, I think "paddy" is like a lot of other words ... depends on context, who's using it & to whom, how it's meant ...

Nah, not offensive in the least to me

As with one of the poll options it depends on the context. I lived in Manchester for 3.5 years and made some great friends there and they would often refer to me as Paddy and I would take no offence as it was meant as a term of endearment. They were just referring to my manner and the certain slang terms I used etc - they were and still are dear friends and have done a lot for me.

However, if I am called a "f**king Paddy" in an aggressive manner it changes totally. Purely down to context.

    Depends on the context
something is only offensive if you want it to be.

people are far too quick to be offended by lots of things these days, and doubly so if it involves someone english. i mean, weve already have 1916 trotted out. what that has to do with being a paddy, i have no idea.

    Yeah totally... "YOU FACKING PADDY"
I think they call Scottish people 'scotch' in much the same way.
IMO it can be playful or not, depending on who uses it and how.

In So Cal have not been referred to in slang terms. Occasionally someone will ask, "You're Irish?"

Used to live in Australia. Worked in a very multicultural environment where i was the only Irish person. I used to have lunch with someone from Scotland and 2 Aussies(1old and 1 young). We were referred to as; Paddy, Jock, Skippy and Joey. It's not an offensive term in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

It's only offensive if said by an english person who thinks I'm lesser than him.

I personally have no problem being called white/short/paddy/etc... so long as it's not meant offensively. And even if it was - I probably wouldn't care.
But I can see if used in the wrong context people might take offence.

I think it's a nice term actually - kind of a pet name for Irish people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭missmatty

I wasn't aware that the term 'scotch' was in anyway negative. My mother's family are mostly scottish/irish while we're from the west of Ireland. My mum and nan would always say 'scotch' instead of 'scottish' as it's just a
verbal short cut really...and affectionate in my opinion :D

For some reason when I see the word Paddy I always seem to hear it in my head in an English accent. I don't like it, even if it was used in an endearing way.

When I was 12 I was on holiday in the Isle of Man.

I was walking around and a bunch of drunk Scots asked me for directions.
When they heard my accent, they called me a "****ing Paddy" and proceeded to give me all sorts of grief about being Irish.

    Was I offended?
    Not really.

    Did I run?
Damn right I did. Scared the life out of me.

Oh yeah, oneeyedsnake banned for that N****r remark.

Scotch is whiskey, Scots are people from Scotland. People who call the Scots Scotch are just a bit simple.

what if I don't call you Paddy but still think I am superior;)

What if it is said by an American, or an Aussie or is it only the English that insult the Irish?

Even Brit is insulting if it is preceded with the word ****ing. As in "Oh, you're a Brit" becomes "oh, you're a ****ing Brit".

What about the terms Culchie or Bog trotter, or Jackean if you want to insult Dubs? or are they ok because it is one Irishman to another?

Nicknames for "Other People" are common and such should be taken in the context in which they are meant.

I know a lot of Scots-Irish who call themselves 'Scotch' and they are not developmentally disabled......

Why do you think Scotch Whiskey is called 'Scotch'

I never got the whole thing with African-American. What about the ones that didn't come from Africa orginally? I mean weren't there slaves taken from Jamaica as well. And you don't hear them being called Jamaican-American.

And besides, didn't National Geographic (I think) have this show years ago about how we all came from the same person originally .. some woman in Africa. So, I'm African-Irish :)

    Source: National Geographic

I don't get offended by Paddy, I just call them a Limey.
