Good Value Supplements

OK lads, here's one for ye. I have been using weights for several years now, and have used numerous supplements. As I have been in a stable good job during this time, I have always had enough cash and generally bought Maximuscle products (Progain, Promax, Cyclone, Protrient are my faves. Also use some other brand ZMA and Tribulus Terretrius from time to time). I found them to be effective and great tasting, but as most people know - they are pricey. Now im trying to save some money for a personal venture, and I do not have as much cash to play around with. My main goals are size, power and strength for rugby.

I am a little suspect of a lot of the cheap crap I see on health food shop shelves. Can anyone recommend good, straight-up effective products that are good value. I dont want to necessarily buy the cheapest - just the best VALUE

ie: Best Value Weight-Gainer (something like Progain for a PWO shake)
Best Value Creatine (All in one like Cyclone or Pure Monohydrate)
Best Value Protein (No problem buying in bulk here to save on cost -I'd like to buy big industrial sack fulls of this stuff instead of pricey little tubs!)

    www.irish-lifting.com

    www.pro-nutrition.ie

great value products from both so take your pick. For me taste is the biggest factor when it comes to supplements like those that you are looking for, so go with something you like. Nutrition X products would be my personal favorites followed by ON

Thanks lads. NutritionX stuff looks good, particularly Big Whey and Mass X. Has anyone here sued their creatine before? How come I havent heard of them before? :o

I know that some of the most serious lifters on this forum would favour nutritionx

I got an order from bulkpowders.co.uk recently - whey and micronized creatine.
Very cheap. I wouldn't be able to assess its quality really but it seems grand to me.

The bulk of most weightgainers is just glucose or dextrose. This can be got in supermarkets for €1 per 500g. It is a waste of money paying for postage on what is basically sugar. And you pay over the odds for relatively low turnover stores to stock it.

I got stuff from www.bulkpowders.co.uk before and they are very cheap. Not really any branded stuff, and www.irish-lifting.com is good too, forgot about their supplements- great deal on this protein at the moment

    http://www.irish-lifting.com/product_info_supplement.php?manufacturers_id=2&products_id=57

And fantastic deal on plates too, I got 2x20kg plates last week- very happy with them.

Would this be for a post-workout 'recovery' shake?

Also, what people recommend from bulkpowders.co.uk (or elsewhere) that compares most favourably to No XPlode?

    Thanks...

For post workouts most will recommend 1 part protein to 2 parts carbs by weight. Many experienced lifters here use RAM, as columok recommended.

You can make your own PWO mixture though. It is cheaper to buy protein in bulk rather than have bought 1kg of protein, and a 1kg PWO mixture. So you can get glucose in tescos at €1 per 500g, and mix this with protein to get the 1:2 ratio.

I am not that serious about my lifting and use PWO mode as my time to indulge in sweets! and other simple carbs. So instead of glucose, I might have fudge or other high sugar snacks, e.g. pancakes with maple syrup, apple juice etc, and I take plain whey shakes with it.

Haha that's exactly what I do too!!

I like to use the excuse "I'm trying to keep my weight up" in situations like that.

So, you mean buy a 1kg bag of regular protein from pronutrition or wherever? How much are you talking for this?

depends on where you buy, e.g. irish-lifting have a 5lb bag for €35 of protein powder. as with most stuff if you buy a bigger tub it is cheaper per lb. So Irish-lifting are charging €7 per lb for the protein. Now you could split this up, keep 3lb as protein, then mix the remaining 2lb, with 4lb of glucose (~4x€1bags), that will cost you 35+4=€39

so now for €39 you have a 3lb bag of protein, and a 6lb bag of PWO mix.

To buy 2 such products individually would cost a lot more than that, especially as they would be lower weights so you loose on the bulk disount you tend to get on big bags of stuff.

Tesco also have cheap protein at the moment- round steak for ~4.50 per kilo! think the offer ends sunday.

With that bulk powders do you need to add flavouring or is it ok to drink on it's own?
