I am thinking switching gyms and joining Jackie Skelly in Ashbourne as it is more convienent for me. I have arranged to go in and have a look around, but they were very vague on the phone regarding membership fees for some reason.

Can anyone tell me what they are paying a month in Jackie Skelly as I dont want to go in and then find that it is more expensive than what I am willing to pay (I only pay 44 a month at current gym) , but get pushed into signing a contract for 12 months!!! I have problems saying no!!!!

Joined it for a while. It wasn't anything mad, if I recall. I did the 3 month membership, as I knew I'd do it for a month and a half, and then slowly stop going (it's out of my way).

I would imagine that's why they don't tell you the membership fees over the phone!!

Most gyms of that type tend to be in the 5-700 euro range, so just be aware of that before you go in and they attempt to bully you into signing.

I rang the one in Rathfarnham, and they rang a few times trying to get me to join. I didn't, but as far as I can remember it was about €65 a month..

I wouldn't darken their door. My wife joined and subsequently quit. Then she got a very aggressive phone call quoting a contract she had never seen or known about. Now they are demanding to be paid for a full year, whether she uses the place or not.

Hanley is right, the reason they bring you to meet a "membership consultant" is to lay on the hard sell techniques and to remind you the deal of century ends in the next 30 seconds ;)

Of course there are plently of genuine people running gyms but a mega chain like this is large enough to have dedicated sales staff and they are very good at what they do.

If you have problems in this situation then maybe take your partner or a friend. Or maybe leave your wallet in the car so you cannot pay a deposit and you cannot fill a direct debit without leaving the room.
Unfortunatly I'm nerdish enough to know my bank a/c number, sort code and my credit card number too in my head :p

Wow, it seems there are two people here who registered just to bash Jackie Skelly. I've never used it so I don't know

My wife just tried to cancel her membership as the 12th payment came out of our account today but they tell us there is a 50 day notice for cancellations. So in effect, she will now have to pay for another months membership and she doesn't even use it any more. When you are paying for something monthly, surely it's illegal to have a 50 day notice for cancellations?

Yeah I was a member in Ashbourne a couple of years ago and I think i was paying 69 a month then. I had the same problem with cancelling after 12 months as they demanded 2 months notice. So I filled in their cancellation form in the gym and after 2 months they kept charging me claiming they had no record of my cancellation(should have got a copy but I was more trusting then).

As a gym its grand for cardio, weights are a bit restrictive(no olympic bar) and the pool was usually full of kids at weekends and after school. Found the instructors pretty much useless(only realised after I left and read around)

Don't do it. They cost a lot (I priced the JS in Swords at over 700 for a year), don't provide a good service (they didn't know what deadlifts were, and had no decent free weights) and several women have complained that they won't suspend or refund membership if they get pregnant, but won't allow them to use the gym.

    Thats just not true!
Women are reccomended by the instructors to exercise and i know its not company policy to stop pregnant women training, maybe thats why they wont allow them to suspend there membership as there is no reason for them to stop bar complications,

although all people can freeze there membership regardless of circumstances but i think there is a fee and then the months add on to the contract at the end!

I don't know about that, I've seen plenty of pregnant women in the JS in swords.

I'm reporting when I was told by women at breastfeeding and toddler group meetings.

I hate to ask, but are you sure they were pregnant and not just suffering from extreme muffin top? I offered my seat to a pregnant woman on the bus today, and it turned she wasn't pregnant. And wasn't pleased.

Embaressing. I'm sure thats what every woman wants to hear.

There was a lady in the gym last week on a excercise bike who was at least 7-8 months pregnant, 100% sure it was pregnacy as she looked in extremly good shape apart for the bump. She's not the first pregnant lady I've seen in the gym either

Fair enough, it wouldn't surprsie me in the least if they had tried banning pregnant women in the past but opened up a world of hurt on themselves and reversed the policy.

Over all though I have to say I like the JS in both Swords and Drogheda, never over crowded, never had any problems with the staff or members being rude in any way and the place is always spotless. I know they are not the best equipped, but for what I want its grand.

Thats brilliant! Either way she was getting a free seat, she should be pleased. When i was pregnant i was never offered a seat on a bus-not once!

I tried joining gym then and i was told i could join but couldn't use it???

Sorry to bring up an old topic.I'm with Jackie Skelly's Swords for four years now.I've had a lot of problems with them before and the only reason I'm still with them is for convenience more than anything as the gym is right beside my house.Anyway I was wondering has anybody joined JS Swords recently?
My wife wants to join and I thought then might give us some sort of deal.
Boy was I wrong, not only do they want her to pay €6 more a month than me
but they also want her to pay a €75 signing on fee. When they asked me over the phone "how does that sound?" I replied "that sounds crap,a joining on fee is a load of nonsense". Does anybody know is €67 a month the norm now for Jackie Skellys?

Don't know, but it's a really good reason for not joining JS. There is Image in the Castle shopping centre www.imagegym.com which is excellent for everything except the showers, or a new one Migym on the Forest Road, and a bit closer to the city you have Alssa, Sportslink or Northwood.

Thanks for the reply.Yea i know about the Image gym but she wants the use of a swimming pool as well as a gym and she also wants to take our five year daughter swimming sometimes.I was a member in Alssa before but the pool is only open the odd time and its not in the main Alssa sports ground but in near the airport. We also considered Northwood but there's no children allowed in Northwood.I might have a look at the fitness centre in Roganstown as they have a pool also but I believe they are even more expensive than Jackie Skelly's.

Try Sportslink on the old airport road. They have a pool, including a leisure pool with wave machine and lazy river etc. http://www.sportslink.ie/swimming/swimming.htm

    Decent enough gym too.

That looks very promising, very reasonable family rate also.
Thanks very much,I'll pay them a visit tomorrow.

Yes 67 euro a month is the lowest at the moment in js. I'm in ballsbridge as its close to my office and this is the lowest i know of anybody being on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 834 ✭✭✭jeawan

we managed to get it for 59 euro in parkwest after four of us joined at the same time , tbh i wouldn't join a JS gym ever again they are a joke the way they treat there members and parkwest is not very clean and the equipment is falling apart

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭Clseeper

JS are ok as long as you know what your getting yourself in for i.e. a year long membership is actually 13 months because you need 50 days notice etc. They don't do family memberships but the one good thing about it is that due to their hard sell tactics ,[they seem to have more sales staff than gym staff!], there's a lot of room for haggle. Tell them to take a hike on the joining fee and haggle. I've heard people getting it for €52 a month. That's what'll kill me, everybody is paying different rates for the same half arsed service. Things are quite slow at the moment so it might be a good time, they'll be dying to get sales.

When you sign up-or at least when i did and a few others in my office they offered free personal training but you have to wait for a month to six weeks to get the appointment and even then they only offer the intial appointment on weekends. As its mostly people using it coming from work i think its done that way specifically so people won't bother
