Ok poker prices are on the way up and up , With the irish open going from 3300 - 4500 and now the Ept goin from 4500 - 8000 . I mean u would have to sit down and think about your bankroll and think , i can play Waterford weekend, Ipc,Macau and the irish open for this Buy in .

Take for instance Nic-Nic-Nic who took down the sat in Drogheda last night and was handed €8000 for 1st place . I said now its a tough decision because its alot of money for one game , Nicky is capable is cashing in the EPT i have no doubt and could be up with the best of them no problem.

But €8000 is a good bankroll to tick u over , So let me ask the Question if u Won a ticket to the EPT . Would u sell or play ????

I would sell it due to the dead money element of me playing the EPT, I might play the super sat. before it though.

Then u win a super sat ticket ? Another decision :D

Tough one eh....I think I'd really have to sell the ticket...Certainly if it was the WSOP ME then I dont think I could....but for something like this I reckon you're better off selling, playing a few Sunday Millions or live bits and pieces and padding your roll with the remainder.

simple decision really for me it depends on two linked questions.

    a) Do I think I'm an above average player in that field? No. :(

    and

    b) Does the buyin represent less than 5% of my BR? No.

So for me it's a definite No on both counts.

For Nicky it's obviously a different story as he can honestly consider himself to be at least average in the field and he has the experience. In relation to BR I'm not familiar with Nicky's situation but I'd imagine this is where it gets marginal but if he posted up on boards looking to sell 30-40% of his action at face value it would be snapped up before the end of the day.

I'm in for 2% if he does sell anyway!! :p

    Congrats Nicky, nice touch. :D

Play the thing, you'll regret it otherwise.
You've only just been saying you feel on top of you game, so go for it, lifes too short.

As said, if you want to hedge a bit, sell a few percent.

I have never sold a ticket yet, but for something this size I think it would be very hard to resist if an offer was made. However, I wouldn't play the sat with the intention of selling the ticket.

On a slightly different note, does anyone know what happened to RD's offer? Time is running out for payment now, and I have heard nothing about it so I presume he isn't playing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,405 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

I really regret not selling my Irish open ticket for a marked up value. It was nice to play it, but it would have been much better if i played 2-3 mind buy in tourneys with better structures.
    Its totally over rated.

With regard to 5% arguement, if it was less than that youa re probably not going to need to play satellites. I think the amount you put in is more decisive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,698 ✭✭✭semibluff

agree with joe - when them crazy figures were being thrown around for the IO tickets shoulda sold up. hindsight is a brill thing, but seeing that you would have had to cashed something like 10/15 positions higher just to get what was being offered . . . but each case is player dependant. i think nic should play it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,612 ✭✭✭kakak1

    Well done Nicky, nice result.

What should he do ? Well as previously mentioned €8000 is a nice sum and would give you entry to a lot of very good up coming tournaments, Big Slick, IPC, Macau, Irish Open, all tournaments which Nicky is well capable of taking down. A lot of players in the EPT will be capable of winning so your chances have to be somewhat reduced.

So Nicky is it EPT or is it ETP :D:D

    If you're in I'm on for 2%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,822 ✭✭✭tipp86

id have to sell look to invest maybe €3000 in smaller buy ins.Whereas a player like nicky has to look at moving on up a level after the irish open.

Once you have been given the cash and would not have normally bought yourself in for an €8k event then I think it is a tough decision to hand over the money and buy yourself in. I certainly wouldn't at the moment.

I think it is a bad move by people running satellites to give a cash option, it takes away the point of a satellite IMO and leaves a hard decision for the players. Mind you if I had have known that a cash option was available I might have bought the ticket before Nicky did :)

BTW - all those advocating to sell - He has the cash, there is nothing to sell!! (other than percentages in other events he chooses to enter with it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,418 ✭✭✭BIG-SLICK-POKER

Think u should sell 50% Nicky im in anyhow if u do also . Save €4000 and sell the rest . This gives u a bankroll and a shot at the EPT which u could do well in same as the Irish open this year

    Tough Spot NicK

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭Macspower

buy in sell 50% sounds like the plan

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 955 ✭✭✭sickpuppy

As Nicky is pro he should play and sell 40 to 50%of himself.
If he hit a good result coupled along with his strong showing
at the irish open he might get sponsored.
4k is nota huge amount if hes been running well.
As he won the ticket in a satellite hes basically freerolling if he sells a %of himself.
If you want the big returns you gotta gamble big and it doesnt come much bigger than the ept so gambooooolllll nicky play the thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

    I'd definitely sell it.
As much as I'd like to play some of these events, I'd be much more interested in having a higher bankroll for live/online cashgames and the occasional mid-priced tourny than playing one high buyin tourny. Also, given the size of the buyin, I reckon I'd be playing scared and this definitely wouldn't be good considering the field and with my tiny amount of live experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭valor

    nicky is an old luckbox

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,124 ✭✭✭NickyOD

I would never play a supersat and then sell the ticket. That's just dumb IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Russh

Well done Nicky...I think I'd be playing if it were me.....maybe sell off 20-25% for expenses...It would be sure nice to see an Irish player take it down......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭thechamp87

PLAY IT!! You're getting a shot at an 8k for tourney for about 1500. I know it's harder when they give you the cash - terrible IMO as it's a sattelite and people should be playing for the ticket. I read something you wrote in the past week or so saying you're playing the best poker you have played in a long time. I think you'll kick yourself if you don't play it.

firstly well done nicky...and on neills question u have to play the event..if u decide to sell some% is up to yourself(let me know if u are) but the event has to be played regardless...even sell enough% to cover the 1k buy in to the satellite u won...whatever u decide BEST OF LUCK M8...

this is what i posted in another tread but this one seem more active

it really is a hard one if I was handed a ticket well I wouldn't sell it and play but to be handed 8k is different. I've always been of the opinion that buying into one ept is -ev and that I would never buy into one unless I could buy into at least five the same year. I know the variance would be still huge but I always felt that if I played five of these in one year I would have a run at one at least.

Its not a choice of playing the other lower buy-in events coming up I'd be playing those anyway but rather do I put 8k down- a significant % of my roll- for one tournament. ATM I'm probably leaning towards being prudent and not buying in but don't be surprised to see me there on the day 4-betting scandies.

thanks for the kind words gents much app

for now I'm off on a two day bender, planned since last week so ill make my decision on monday

congrads on win nicky, i think you should play, espeicially when you had that win earlier in the year, its not exactly going to break ur bank roll unless you have busted it by now(i dont think so).
You are well capable of cashing. This could be the one, so i think you should go for it.
    Best of luck.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 388 ✭✭mrflash

nice win nicky, and my advice is sell the ticket. the fact that you are even thinking about it means that selling is the right decision. Or i mean don't play it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 195 ✭✭Caboose

    Nice one Nicky

If it t'were me I'd be selling it. The luck I'd need to win that would have drained my luck bank for the EPT itself.

    :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,771 ✭✭✭carfax

    Congrats on the win Nicky.

You are defo a good bet and would be missing out if you don't play.

You can't expect to win a major tournament if you don't take every opportunity you have to play in one.

You Deise fellas are so tight

Just my opinion Nicky but I would love to have the dilemna you have right now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,012 ✭✭✭kincsem

I would sell. The variance is huge. There will be no free chips in the EPT. Better to play in a bunch of €1k tourneys.

I would use it to bet on the nags in the Breeders Cup tomorrow.

    i'll play it for you - it's a win/win for everybody!!

    nice job wd luckbox etc

like the world series playing the ept is one of the best experince u get and cashing is even better .

i have played both and really found the ept harder than world series .if i had the chance to play the ept i take it with both hands but i would sell some of my action 40% at least to be honest if u did get very lucky and did win it and believe me u do need a lot of luck no matter how good u are .then 50% or 60% of myself would do me as after the win u get some form of sponsorship from it

just reaching the final table i got free entry from pokerstars to another ept event just for putting on there shirt at the final table

so play and sell some of yourself otherwise u regret it if u never get another chance to do it as it getting so pricey to play these days .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭Mr.Plough

i would only play if i could sell 50%, which i probably couldn't.

    WAIT A MINUTE ....

Good tourney players like Nikky do not get that many opportunities to play an 8k buyin for a grand. Forget about the cash and dont sell any of this. Play for yourself for 3 reasons:

    1. If you sell shares you will may play your optimum game as having the added pressure of "backers" does not help.

    2. You will be well upset if you cash and have to give a % of your hard earned winnings away.

    3. Worst case scenario you dont cash. So what, its only a grand and the experience will be worth it.

    Good luck mate.

1 i dont think our nic nic would play any different if he sold any of himself

2 if i won i be happy for does people who backed me so would nic nic i say

3 with 4 or 5 k in the pocket if he sold some of himself it wont matter if he does not cash he still give it his all .anyway it becomes a crapshoot at end of that tourie anyway ask roy the boy he tell u and nicnic would get some good experience from playing anyway

    - The EPT is probably the toughest tournament held in Ireland on a yearly basis. There is no overlay; relatively few weak players (this is prolly more true with the up in buyin); the best tournament players in the world; and the structure cannot be leaned on so much;

    - At the same time it gives you a shot at the BIG spin. Prolly moreso than the IO because the EPT events get very solid media coverage; winner gets entry to Monte Carlo (plus expenses); Pokerstars DOES offer sponsorship;

Moreseo than a lot of players in Ireland - I think Nicky should play.

The overall standard in the EPT is abolutely terrible, even more so now that a much higher % of the field is made up of online qualifiers. The play at London EPT final table was the equivilent of a $1 STT.

I agree with this too, from what I ahev dealt before the standard, whilst having some very good players, had some awfully shocking ones too.
Nicky is probably above average though, if he ran well :D

Well Done on the win Nicky and if you decide to play it all the best too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭RoundTower

I would not play if I won a negotiable ticket. I would sell it.

If I was living in Ireland I would play it.

If I was living in Ireland, but was broke, I would sell it.

If I was living in Ireland, was not broke, but sucked at poker, I hope I would sell it.

The standard in an EPT is much better than in a $1 SNG online; I think a $100 SNG is more like it.

Silly question, but is swapping a percentage with another player not a better idea then selling a percentage? If you do that it will kinda properly adjust for variance. Selling a percentage almost says that you're not sure about yourself. I mean, why wouldn't you take 100% of your winnings? We all know about variance and such, but for the non-poker observer it could be read as lack of confidence. So you would end up selling a percentage to a poker player anyways. Then why not swap instead?

Another question. How can one sell their seat if won via PokerStars, to name one example site. AFAIK you can only sell a second seat for the same EPT, but not the first.

P.S. Thailand is too hot, even in the winter!
P.P.S. Good thing I've got VNC setup. :-D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,656 ✭✭✭dannydiamond

Nicky won eight grand, where, is irrelevant as it was a cash prize.
Cost of ept is at least nine grand(buy in,accom, heineken etc).
Spending nine grand on 1 ept is madness even for a player of nics ability and i seriously doubt if many of the previous posters would take their own advice and pay 9k into a tournament.
