An Acceptable Vegetable?

I'm probably going to get a kicking for this, but here I go...

Further to a thread in Food & Drink about Christmas grub I mentioned that I loved sprouts. Brother Rigger asked how this was possible.

    Sprouts...Ahhh... * drools Homer-style *

How can anyone love sprouts Brother Billy?!

Brothers - Surely sprouts are the one veg (OK - there are two, but I'll come to that in a minute) that men of our ilk can enjoy especially with Christmas dinner?

A feast of drink, a mountain of turkey meat, luscious gravy & sprouts - followed by a tea-time snack of more gargle, a cold turkey leg & jar of pickled onions (the other acceptable veg) is a sure-fire way to prime the ol' gastrointestinal tract for an evening of farting away happily on the sofa while watching the latest Bond movie & polishing off the Cadbury's Roses that the wife & kids/girlfiend refuse to eat.

Sprouts are good for you lads (maybe not so good for your loved ones though) - get them into ye!

I think unless it's a potato we have to go back to DeVore : veg is not food. Veg is what food eats.

    Chips are vegtables .... kinda

Assuming potato is yer only man and you've only left it out cos it goes without saying then I'd be fond of a bit of cabbage myself so I find your affection for sprouts completely acceptable - and all the more so because you rate highly the spectactular flatulence their ingestion affords.

    good work brother billy

Sprouts are little green balls of mushy poison.

I do like cabbage though, as part of a bacon & cabbage combo, heavy on the bacon.

I think we should embrace sprouts & cabbage, in fact-ah, brassicas in general ... if not for their vegetableness, for their ... ah ... propellant and stench attributes

The Word of the Lord according DeV still holds true in this regard.

And what say ye of the Pickled Onion?

    OK ...

    Spuds
Brassicas (cabbage, sprouts, kurly kale etc)
    Onions (pickled, spanish,red)
    Peppers (including jalapenos and jabaneros)

Ummm ... is garlic a vegetable

This is getting complicated ... I'm hungry now so I am.

    Take it to PI Billy.

Ok, I think we have to take this in context.

On their own, any vegetable is what food eats, as per DeVore.

In conjunction with a mound of food, such as is the feast that is the Christmas dinner, vegetables only play a small part in the overall gorge-fest.

Therefore, in that and only that context, it is acceptable to eat vegetables.

Can I make a plea for the humble but proud baked bean?

    Tom - That's lefty-liberal clap-trap.

My point specifically related to Christmas Day & the eating of sprouts at dinner & pickled onions at tea. Both of these for the sole purpose of farting.

    No. They are for kids.

Sprouts & pickled onions are for grown-ups.

hmm, the only time I accept vegetables is when they are part of a shepard's pie that is smothered in gravy.

Nonsense. I've made many a happy fart after pie & beans.

On a pedantic note, they're probably a pulse rather than a vegetable anyway.

No sprout will pass my lips, but pickled onions are a must for any manly food cupboard

sprouts are foul. the scourge of the vegetable world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,790 ✭✭✭slavetothegrind

Always slice yer sprout in half prior to ingestion, ye often get little wee worms that live in there!

    Like tequila!

Vegetables merely pad out a plate thereby reducing the amount of meat on offer, that said they have a place as wot the missus calls a garnish ( food preperation term so had to ask herself!).

Under no circumstances spend any time in a room after a meal with a person on a vegetable only diet. Their bodies protest at this gross manipulation odorously and persistantly, if we could capture it riot police could use it instead of mace!

Well spuds are definitely a good food. They become chips and spuds are lovely when fried. I don't really like much else vegetable wise except for carrots. I've always loved carrots.

Green vegetables are out of the question (even on a burger, pick that lettuce off), but in some cases things like onion, cabbage, carrots, or tomatoes are acceptable if they are cooked along with meat and part of a meat dish (shepherd's pie, chili). Potatoes and beans are not really vegetables, they're tubars and lugumes, so they are usually OK in most forms ("healthy" bean salads are off limits though). Where I live in the Southern US, mac and cheese counts as a vegetable. It's on the vegetable list at any country diner anyways. The sort of places where I usually eat lunch gives you a choice of a meat and two vegetables, and most times I get a country-fried steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, and mac and cheese. That's a perfectly acceptable vegetable choice, imo.

I think people who pick things off their bugers and pizzas should be killed.

If you dont want lettuce, pickles, onions, mushrooms etc on your food, then stipulate that in your order.

I guess it's more of a fruit, but Avocado's are acceptable due to their relatively high fat content.
