    Hey all,

Just a very brief word of thanks to both Nutrition X and www.irish-lifting.com who have both made the very clever decision to come on board and help support G'em on her journey to the Worlds in Scotland on the 17th of November.

Now then, unlike most sponsorship type deals where everything is normally a pack of lies I think we are all aware the G'em has been an avid fan of Nutrition-X products from the get go, and is delighted that they have shown such faith in her abilities.

As for www.irish-lifting.com , well G'em has been training in Mick's Gym on Frederick Street and of course Pinnacle pretty much since day one so a massive thanks to Mick for showing his faith in a bit of home grown strength as well!!!

    Roll on the Worlds!!!!

G'em, you might want to fix your NutritonX link in your sig if you want them to keep sponsoring you!

Anyways, best of luck, you'll walk it no doubt!

It's the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation World Championships in Scotland next month which Hanley will be competing in too.

I think he'll be competing as the current Junior Irish Champion (Correct me if I'm wrong Hanley)? And he was in the <90kg class, is that still the same?

I'll be in the women's Open <80kg class - I'm a little loathe to say what my aims are weight-wise in case I jinx anything, but I've already surpassed two of my three lift PRs in training so I'm definitely on course to lift big ;)

    At Nationals I got:
    Squat 130kg
    Bench 62.5kg
    DL 158kg

I hit a good 135kg squat yesterday, I'm now benching around 75kg and I'm getting a 150kg DL pretty easy. I'm on target, put it that way! Plus I'm getting coached by Eric Cressey so if anyone can help me get super-strong, he can :D

Has Dragan been hired as PR/A?

Congrats on everything, good luck to both you and Hanley.

I imagine all are one rep max weights. I was looking at the crossfit estimates
    http://www.crossfit.com/cf-journal/WLSTANDARDS.pdf

Seems they vary a bit between exercises. e.g. a 165 man might be "expected" to lift 1.5 times a woman on a bench in intermdiate, but 1.9 times at "advanced".

I suspect it is since women will only develop muscle to a certain size (without drugs), while men should be capable of getting a lot stronger.

I also noticed the % increase in expected ability changed for men & women,
    depending on the exercise.
Probably due to muscle differences in men & women. e.g. men will have a bigger chest naturally, while legs might be not so different.

So the weights G'em is lifting are not really comparable to a man. That is what I was interested in, the differences. I am probably around the same weight as G'em and can bench what she can but am nowhere near her deadlift or squatting ability.

I have to laugh when guys ask me what I can bench - it's such a male standard!! It's very hard for women to be strong benchers, and if they are they're usually bench specialists. My bench is by far and away my weakest lift, and for a woman to have a bodyweight bench is extremely good (elite in fact). My biggest issue with the bench always has, and still is, a technique one, but I'm slowly pulling it together. Both my squat and DL are elite as they are - but a double bw squat and a 2.5 bw deadlift are on the horizon ;)

Men will make strength increments much more dramatically than a woman can, so it's never fair to compare the genders directly.

My bench press sucks ass. I only wish it was because I had female breasts. That is all.

Just a question about some of the terminology you guys use... When someone says they "have a bodyweight benchpress" - what exactly does that mean? Does that mean they can do one full rep of their bodyweight, or three reps, or fives reps?? Is there a 'standard'?

    Just curious,

    Thanks...

So if you can lift one rep of Xkg, you say "I have an xkg bench?"

    Cool,

Thanks - just tryna get "down" with the lingo so I look like I know what I'm talkin bout at the next conference :)

I lift at home with no spotter so have no idea what my 1RM is for most exercises.

You can use a calculator to estimate though.

    http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/OneRepMax.html

Some I could figure some out fairly safely, like a bicep curl. I am not in any competition so have no need to do 1RMs.

    I wouldn't say that's strictly true

It can be handy to get your 1RM and then use 80-90% of this as your working weight.

I am way too scared to do a 1RM squat. I just have a mental image of my knee exploding or my spine snapping like a twig. All non-sense of course. I have squatted 97kg x 5 x 3

I have not deadlifted since i moved the weights gear home (up stairs on a wooden floor with no mats) but I have done 120kg in the past

My current bench record is 2 reps of 78kg. Most proud of the bench one as last year I could barely bench 60kg

We are currently increasing the size of our shed to take up our whole backyard so its going to be class. When this is done there will be room and the proper surface for deadlifting, cant wait to see if my 1RM has increased

Anyway back OT, congrats to g'em

well done g'em and good luck!
a question? why is it hard for women to be good benchers over say deadlifts?
i would've thought its more about the length of a persons arms/levers as opposed to their gender, relatively speaking.

It's really more of a musculature and structure issue.

Males have far greater potential for muscle mass on the upper torso ( chest, delts ) and will generally have far more potential for power in there arms and lats.......that plus a wider structure means we have certain advantages for pressing moves.

It can be handy to get your 1RM and then use 80-90% of this as your working weight.

I am way too scared to do a 1RM squat.

But that works both ways. How do you know what to even try as your 1RM? Take the military press, I can do 8 reps at 45kg. How do I know what to even try as a 1RM max? I have no spotter so I just keep upping the weight? I do not want to fail as it is dangerous, so if I can manage 55kg, I will still not know if I could have done 56kg. I can plug my 45kg 8rep in the calculator and it estimates the 1RM as 56kg, and 80% of that is 45kg.

I am aiming for hypertrophy, so want the 8-12rep range. So why bother to do the 1RM other than to quote it to people, I will never do it when training as my energy is more efficiently spent doing the 8-12 range. When I first got my weights I did low weights, then increased them until I could do only 8 reps, took only about 3 tries/estimates. This is a far safer way to determine your 8rep max weight which in effect is the "working weight" that you calculate from your 1RM. Then I stick with the weight until I can do 10-12reps, then add more on until I am back to 8reps again.
