This starts on Thursday at 9 pm on the posh channel. :)

Its 6 parts so they should make a good fist of it. Part one is 1800-1914: Fixing the Shadows: which looks at how a technical problem solved in 1839 paved the way for the camera as we know it (or is that knew it now?).

Damn evening shift next week, have to get the parents to record it if they're not hogging the satellite.

Saw this advertised the other night, a must watch given the quality of BBC programmes.

I assume someone on the internet will record this
and share it for reviewing purposes only.:)

Damn, I'll miss the first two episodes. Still there seems to be a trend for shows shown first on BBC3 or 4 to get another showing on BBC1 or 2 a few weeks later. Hopefully that will be the case for this show.

Amateur Photographer are running a series of articles in conjunction with this. It does look good. Regarding being repeated, AP says it will be on BBC2, but not until next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭nilhg

It will probably be on bittorrent Friday morning:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

Good spot ... thanks for passing it on ... someone will no doubt record it for (ahem) review purposes ...

I've added it to our Boards calendar also ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

I note from the schedule that it repeats the same night at 12:20am and 2:50am for all you night owls ...

Did anyone watch tonight's episode? Never knew Kodak was the first to bring photography to the masses! (Always assumed it would be some European company...)

    Daguerreotype "photos" look amazing!

Pretty excellent program all round, though it possibly skimmed over a few details (there was no mention of Niepce, Daguerre's partner who arguably invented the process, but who died a couple of years before it became widely available), but given the scope, this was forgiveable, and I'm looking forward to the rest. All in all a good night for photography on Beeb4. That was followed a documentary on Chambre Hardman, a famous Liverpool portrait photographer from the '20s-'60s. A repeat I guess as it was narrated by the late great John Peel

Yes, those Daguerrotypes looked pretty stunning, even on TV! Has anyone here actually seen one in 'real life' as it were? Or is there anywhere in Dublin where they might have one or more on display?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

    Hi Alun,
I remember seeing quite a few during my time studying in Dublin. For the life of me I can't remember where though. I'm so unsure that I can't even remember if they were on permanent display or an exhibition passing through.

They were pretty underwhelming to look at, although nice to see from a scientific point of view.

That's odd .. from looking at them on the program last night they seemed to have a certain 'depth', for want of a better word, almost a 3D-like quality to them that looked quite intriguing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

That's true alright, when you angle your head around then they do have that quality to them.
Although I'm quite sure they were larger than life on the tv screen and prime examples to boot, the ones I saw were postcard sized and pretty flea bitten. Kind of hard to be impressed :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

You're right, thinking back on it, most of the ones that really impressed me were actually brand new ones made by the guy who was on there demonstrating the technique. I could imagine that given the delicate nature of the surface created by this technique that they possibly wouldn't wear well and could be easily damaged.

Think this is repeated on Monday @ 8pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Only a matter of time before they become readily available.:)

    Showing on BBC4 now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭i_am_dogboy

Just watched it, great show. Not a huge amount of detail on any of the topics covered, but definitely enough to get you interested and researching further yourself. I'm really looking forward to the res of the series. It's been a long time since a tv show that isn't house got me this excited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

superb show IMO ... I have watched it twice ... I notice they had an interveiw with David Byrne from the Talking Heads ... never knew he was a photo buff ...

I recorded via Windows Media Centre ... in fact I have several recordings now ... I found out that when you set media centre to record an entire series ... it not only records the series ... it also records every single instance of repeat ... and in BBC4's case they are showing it around 5 times a week ... if not more ... still I suppose this is good given the crap service provided by NTL.

Did anyone see the show immediately after it on Thursday? ... about Liverpudlian photographer Chambre Hardiman ... this was also quite good ... introduced by John Peel ... I have this recorded also if there is any interest ...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 356 ✭✭dirtydress

I would definitely be interested if someone is able to record the one on Thursday night!!!

I noticed that, I vaguely remember reading he was into photography a few years back, but what I found curious was the fact that he was billed as "artist and photographer", no mention of musician.

I really enjoyed that - missed last weeks. TBH I know virtually nothing about the history of photography so it was an eye opener for me. Did anyone catch the programme after too? On Lartigue.

    Gotta love BBC4 :)

I watched for the first time last night, very intresting but they do go on with some c**p when they're talking about the particular photographers.
I saw a documentary on the photographer that took the pictures of the london underground and london streets during black out. He was a very modest and straight forward guy and when he was talking about his own shots he was of the opinion that anyone could have taken them, it was a case of being there and doing it. No art school rant!
The documentaries were Master Photographers (1983), I downloaded them.
PM me for details if you like, well worth a watch series of 6

/\ Bill Brandt, that was! /\

I enjoyed that, the 20s/30s was a particularly fecund period for all the creative arts.
