Was anyone else listening to The Last Word on Today FM this evening? They had a discussion about Dreamboxes and using them to decrypt NTL digital signals.

Just curious if someone could fill me in on what the deal is with these boxes? There was some question on the show about whether this is illegal or not and it was pretty much an advertisement for getting one of the boxes. They even gave the model numbers of which box to get.

So what is the story with these boxes? Are they illegal or is there a grey area? Does anybody have one and do they work well? Obviously the box itslef is not illegal as its could be used for other purposes but using it to descramble a satellite signal may be.

I`m not trying to get banned from here but I`m interested about this issue and I hope their can be a (legal) discussion about them?

For anybody that has one of these boxes and uses it for this purpose, where did you get it and what are your thoughts about it? I`d be tempted but I would miss Sky +!

There are places you can discuss these devices, for educational purposes of course, but Boards is not the place.

    Awaiting padlock..

I don`t really understand why there would be a problem with my post or why I would need to re-read the stickies? The only point in the charter that seemed in anyway relevant was:

    "DON'T Discuss hacking systems.
For the avoidance of doubt: DON'T Discuss any methods that allow access to a pay-television service, other than taking out a legitimate, paid, subscription to the provider of that service."

Well it seems to me that the key word there is legitimate and the idea of my post was to question the legitimacy or otherwise of dreamboxes being used to decrypt a satelite signal. I don`t think my post was encouraging use of them if illegal. But surely it is fair game to ask if something is illegal or not?

And the question of its legality was raised on The Last Word and there was no agreement about whether it was or not. I just wanted to come on here and raise the point ofr discussion so I don`t see why this thread should be locked?

Agreed mate, but the mods in this section are very strict on this. :(

I had listened to the article alright. I was quite surprised with how detail they went into, though they obviously lack in legal knowledge.

As do I, though I understand using said hardware for getting free pay-TV is "theft of service"

Of course, using hardware with a paid-for subscription card isn't illegal, it's just using means of getting pay-TV without paying the relevant operator

The boxes mentioned do NOT allow free access to Sky.

However, due to the dodgy issues of these boxes, and what they can do, I can only close this thread.

While it may seem a bit drastic and strict, we cannot allow anything that would cause legal implications against boards.ie, and unless a boards.ie Administrator says I can do otherwise, that's the way it's going to remain.
