the other thread was dragged up from last year when a similar telly was twice the price, so I'm here to put things right for the 2 or 3 people in the country who didn't pick up one of these bad boys in 06. :)

    € 849.99 (€837.99 + €12 Producer Recycling Fund)

    164183800470cab496d1b6.jpg
One of the best looking TVs we’ve ever sold. (apparently)

2 × HDMI sockets (including HDCP decoding)
Integrated DVB-T tuner for all Freeview channels
    Nicam stereo
    Teletext with 1000 page memory
    Response time : 8ms (grey to grey.typ)
    Viewing angle: 178° H/150° v (typ)
    Contrast ratio: 1200:1 (typ)
    Brightness: 500cd/m2 (typ)
    Physical resolution: 1366 × 768
PIP (Picture in Picture) and PBP (Picture by Picture) via external source
Picture improvements by CTI, 3D comb filter
    Noise reduction
Automatic programme search with automatic storage
Picture Formats: 16:9 Subtitles, 16:9 Zoom, 4:3 Panorama, 14:9 Zoom auto

HD – detail like you’ve never seen before
High Definition is the greatest advancement in television technology since black and white changed to colour. A TV bearing the ‘HD Ready’ logo has the ability to display High Definition broadcasts of 720 or 1080 lines, as opposed to ‘standard’ broadcasts of 625 lines. The detail HD delivers is staggering. A HD screen contains more pixels which allows you to see every blade of grass, every thread, every feather in crystal clear clarity.

Well the question we all want answered is, are they any good. How do they compare to the bigger brand names.

Yes, a few comments from any present owners or 'telly experts' would be appreciated as it goes on sale on Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

i'll be doing my damnedest to get one sunday as i think even if it's just decidedly average, the price can't be beaten. i would say it'll be pretty similar to last yeatrs model which was selling at double the price. my next door neighbour has a 44 or 46" Tevion that he got in another sale last year, and he's more than happy with it, but i wouldn't exactly call him an expert.

i'd planned on getting myself the newest top end 40" Sony Bravia when it comes out later in the year, but that was going to be more than 3 times the price of this one.

it would have been to make the most of my PS3 & SkyHD, but I think I'll make do with 1080i instead of 1080p and just get this one instead.

it also means i won't have to put up with playing HD PS3 games on my old 28" CRT TV (also an Aldi special 185e about 3 years ago:)) any more, which will be nice. I saw motorstorm on a HD display in Game last week and it looks like a completely different game than it does on mine.

Went looking for reviews and had a read on avforums about this TV.
Not very good and a few returns as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

yeah, looks like they might be old stock that was either returned or not sold due to bad press from what's been said.

BUT, reading elsewhere, there's complaints that most of these 'big' specials get snapped up by staff and never make to to the public. one shop only had 2 for sale at opening time after staff had their pick in the last sale.

i think i'm still going to chance it and just make sure I'm the first there.

anyone know how big the box is? am I likely to be able to get it into the back of my car? (new shape primera saloon). LCD's don't have to be kept upright like the old plasma's do they?

I was one of the lucky ones, (or I should say unlucky ones as it turned out) that got one of these in Sept 2006. To be honest I was not expect a whole lot from it as it was a good 300 euro cheaper than any other 40" plus lcd on the market. The picture quality was ok on NTL digital but was muck on terrestrial. But the thing that really let it down was the sound quality. You would have got a better sound from two tin cans and a bit a string. Brought it back after a couple of weeks and got a full refund. One good thing about ALDI is they are good about refunds, plenty of practice I suppose.

Don't need to be kept upright but I very much doubt you'd get it into a saloon.

Can the back seats be put down on your saloon? If so you might get it slid in from the boot across the back seats.

I also bought this tv last september.
Have to say I'm more than happy with it.
I use it mainly as a huge Monitor for my laptop and for playin the Wii. Sometimes as a TV!!:p

The picture quality on it when you put the right Source (HD) in to it is amazing. I've watched alot of HD stuff on it from the laptop at 720p and, tbh, I cant imagine the picture being any better, unbelievably vivid and clear.
As for playin the Wii, I have the component cables for the Wii to get the resolution up to 480p and it looks good, but its still not hd!!! (Dang Wii)

TV is pretty good on it, only fault here is the Speakers. Very cheap and tinny, zero bass. There so bad I dont actually use em, I use external speakers.

So, Some of the pluses wit this tv are.....
+ Good tv when watchin HD, ok for TV.
+ If your not happy with it, Aldi give you your money back.
    + 3 year warranty.

    BAD things
    - The Speakers.....
    - The included Wall mount is not as tight to the wall as I'd like but its ok! (Adjustable tilt).

At that price Its a bargin IMO. I'd be buyin it if i didnt already have one. Just throw it back to Aldi if your not happy.

I got a 42" samsung plasma into the back for a regular ford focus, had to take it out of the box though!!

I'd very much doubt if it does MPEG4. I'd say it's just MPEG2, that Freeview use.

    Correct.

The current Irish trials which are in the clear are MPEG2.
Following an (ahem) budget reallocation in DCMNR, it looks likely that it may be 2011 before there is an Irish roll-out, there are no funds available to keep the current trials on-air past Sept. '08 (BT are doing the trials on behalf of the Department).

well, i decided I had to give it a go anyway and I was queuing up in Ashbourne from stupid o'clock this morning. the pair of us went (meself & herself) and took a couple of stools etc.

I've been in the queue a couple f years ago in coolock (i think it was coolock anyway) and it was like a meat market, and I've seen online that they can sometimes only have a couple of TV's left after staff have taken their share, so we decided to pretend it was monday and we were going to work bright and early.

long story (relatively) short is that we were there from 7am and the next in line got there at 9am! well fcukit, we got one anyway. just got it set up, got Sky+, the xbox media centre and PS3 all hooked up with their respective cables, HDMI for the PS3, Component for the Xbox (with a HD adapter yoke) and normal scart for Sky.

I have to say that I am SO impressed with the quality sao far. I'd heard that the bass was very lacking, but it certainly isn't on this one. rich and deep and it goes louder than you'd want it to unless you were having a party. I was going to use the crappy sound as an excuse to go for a 5.1 surround setup as well, but I honestly can't justify it.

for the price that it was, I have to give it 10/10, I simply can't fault it. Sky is a little blurry up close, but I know it's the standard Sky definition to blame for that and I can't justify spending over 500e for a SkyHD box and then another 15e a month for the subscription to what amounds to a dozen channels. when all of Sky is transmitted in HD and the box is 200-300e, then I might think about it, but for now I'm a happy camper as is.

seeing my one blu ray disc (Casino Royale, same as everyone else :D) in 1080i was truly something to behold. I can't help but wonder how much extra I would have got out of a 300e 1080p Sony Bravia. Diminishing returns I reckon and not worth it at all when I have what I have for 850 notes.

oh, and the PS3 games are completely different too. Warhawk is a completely new experience, and I can see why I kept getting pwnd now, there's so much more detail that I couldn't see with my 28" CRT, it's just staggering.

    righto, I'm off for a game. :D

i got a tevion wireless mouse and it didnt even work, so theres not a hope in hell i would buy a telly from em!

id rather spend 300more euro and get a decent manufacturer., its not something you want to go belly up in a year (or less......;))

The Tv is great, I've it hooked up to my 360 and its a big difference from a normal tv :). One problem i found was if you put Surround sound on it buzz's :(

with a 3 year warranty I'm not a bit bothered. that and I've read some pretty good things about Aldi's willingness to replace/refund anything within warranty without problems.

I'm more than happy with what I got. :D

Decided to take the plunge and queued from 8.30am Rathmines.
Knew I was a spanner when the next person joined me at 9.45am!
They only had 4 in Rathmines but only 4 people were queueing for them.
    Good value for the money.

Got this tv yesaterday at aldi
so far it looks great, brilliant picture quality and a doddle to set up
the only thing i am worried about is in the ad from aldi
the specs say it has a built in freeview tuner
on looking at the box it does not mention a freeview tuner
and no reference to it in the manual
on further investigation i have fount there are two models
Uk model no 30180 and Ireland model no 30324
i will be ringing tevion later to sus it out

When it comes in, love to see what happens to NTL.

Actually- we have digital freeview test transmissions which have been ongoing for the past 18 months and are due to finish up Sept 08 from 3 Rock and 2 other broadcast locations. I use a UK freeview box here in Lucan to pick up RTE1&2, TV3 and TG4 in crystal clear MPEG2. Analogue turnoff is not due until the end of 2011 here though (its earlier in the uk)

I purchased my Tevion 40" yesterday and it stopped working after 2 hrs. I reckon it is a duff power supply

Tech support is from the UK.

First attempt at getting their attention was blocked by a "Jobsworth" who would not put me through unless I was standing in front of the unit.

2nd attempt answered me with 3-5 working day wait for courier pickup, then 10 working days for repair. No idea how long to ship it back.

Aldi do not want to know, they say call the helpline, will not replace the broken TV.

I m seething with rage at how I am being treated. All this because I tried to save a few quid.

Oh, BTW, when it worked the quality was good. Now it is just a big black paperweight.

    Regards,

    Dermott

My experience with Aldi is that they are great.....

My mam bought a DVD player there that no longer works. I brought it back to the shop and they don't give money back after 3 months, you have to call Tevion. When I called them they said, ok it's broken, we'll send you out a cheque, no quibble.

Unfrotunately, they do not want to send me a cheque, the want to repair it and that will take about two weeks.

I will try to return it to Aldi again tonight, although that is no use unless they replace it for me.

Well the Europe wide turn-off date is 1.1.12- so regardless of the current situation, the government is going to have to get its act together. No country has a derogation from turn-off of analogue by 2012.

well, almost a week in and I can happily say I'm still stunned by the quality of this TV for the price, I really can't fault it at all. Actually, if I have any criticism it's that the 5-in-1 remote doesn't work great with sky+. i can get the normal sky (non+) features to work using the BskyB code in the manual when set on the 'SAT' button and I can get the record function to work if I put the same code into the 'VCR' button, but I can't get all the features to work from the just a single one of the 5 buttons. shame. :(

Some questions for vibe666 or anyone else...

Does this TV have a backlight adjustment? That isn't brightness, it's to lower the total brightness range and make blacks more black in a darkened room.

Has anyone tried connecting a PC to the VGA port to get 1:1 pixel mapping?

I'm a little tempted. There are still 4 in my local Aldi but they kind of look like they were opened. I suspect they were returned. Probably better off buying a brand. I may be too fussy...

The nice people in AldI HQ have replaced my duff TV.

I should have contacted them directly rather than talk to some in-store drone with limited command of the English language as she is spake on "de nort side"

Very happy with the pic quality, size, style and price.
Let's hope I got the only duff one in the batch sent to Ireland.

Note to self: Retrieve DVD copies of "Spartacus", "Laurence of Arabia" and "2001".That should keep me going for a while.

Anyone got any suggestions for good movies to watch in WIDESCREEN/HD?

    Regards,

p.s. Still not impressed with after-sale service/tech support from UK (medion ltd). Haven't come up against a "jobsworth" in a long while, especially in the customer support world

beg/borrow/steal (rent?) a PS3 and a couple of Blu-Ray movies and some PS3 games and you'll really see what it's all about. :D

games and movies in glorious 1080i is truly a sight to behold.

also, I was getting a component cable today for my xbox and saw a PS3 running on a 40" 1080p sony bravia and i'm glad i didn't fork out an extra 1500e for it, it's really not worth the extra. talk about diminishing returns. i'm more than happy with my choice (especially since i didn't have an extra 1500 to spend, lol!). :)

No, is the short and simple answer.

You can send the signal from the laptop either directly as S-Vid, or via scart- but the refresh rate of the signal tends to interfere with the framerate of the clip at the higher resolutions rendering it very difficult to watch. It does of course depend on the graphics chip, the quality of the S-Vid cable (I'd recommend gold tipped ones) and the quality of the display (and what it supports).

It would be a reasonable assumption that you would be very happy to get an interlaced signal at 60Hz and perhaps 720 * 480 (yes, I know its NTSC rather than PAL, but at 60Hz- its probably better with a DVD quality video stream).

there's a DVI input on the Tevion as well as a VGA one if i'm not mistaken. can't you just use that and set the resolution up to HD levels?

I've not seen a DVI output from a laptop- normally its a vanilla VGA along with S-Vid. The knux of the problem is the laptop does not have digital outputs, only analogue.

A couple of the pricier dells have dvi out. Also some hps have docking stations with dvi.

Most people would need an adapter like this: http://www.expansys.ie/d.aspx?i=119870
