    Hi all,

I'm looking for a piece of advice. I'm thinking of upgrading to 10.5. I will be in the US when the rumored release will take place (26th Oct). I am wondering whether there would be much difference in US and UK/IRL releases of the OS.

Is there much to watch out for when using a US release with a UK/IRL configured Macbook.

It is purely speculative as we will not know till 10.5 is released, but does anyone know if there was/is much difference between US and UK/IRL releases of 10.4.

As with most apple products they are considerably cheaper in the States. I am also going to pick up a 16Gb Ipod touch. I save around 120 euro on it.

    thanks

They'll be exactly the same software wise. Main differences will be the localised stuff like languages, packaging etc.

Will be doing the same myself in NY next month.

The mother is off to Boston next month gonna have her pick me up Leopard and an iTouch.

Will I lose all my files on my Macbook with the upgrade?

you shouldn't do, but with all O/s' i prefer to do a complete reinstall.

anyone know if there'll be shops in ireland (dublin) selling this on the 26th?

Yes, if they have a G4 867MHz or faster.

This Leopard update raises some questions for me:
If I buy a mac now it will come with the usual two grey discs which install the os and iLife.
What does the upgrade do - is it just a copy of Leopard meaning I will have to do a complete reinstall or does it update what I have to Leopard leaving the iLife installation and my settings intact
Or is it the two grey discs including ilife and leopard ??

    confused

As far as I am aware iLife 08 comes free with new machines however, if you buy Leopard to upgrade your current machine, iLife 08 will not be included on the Leopard disk.

I see the Up-to-Date upgrade program is up for US users - http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/. Any similar link for us Europeans? Work bought me a MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago.

Edit: http://www.apple.com/ie/macosx/uptodate/ is where I should have gone - thanks to the guy who answered on the previous post before threads were merged.

Found this on a UK site but it applies to both UK & Ireland stores... i just can't figure out how to apply the discount.

Possibly after login, it checks if you've order a Mac recently and the discount is applied when you add Leopard to cart.
Customers who purchase a qualifying new Macintosh computer on or after October 1st, 2007, that does have not Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard included can upgrade to Leopard for €8.95 from Apple's Website

"Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and its 300-plus new features and innovations are coming Oct. 26, 2007.

If you buy a qualifying Mac between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007, and it does not include Mac OS X Leopard, you're eligible to get Leopard after it's released for just £8.95"

If you purchased your system directly from the Apple Online Store, follow one of these links to participate in the programme. Subject to Terms and Conditions.

    Hi,

So will you guys be upgrading to leopard? I have kept up with all the gossip and the 300 new features, and will no doubt be upgrading as soon as I can get my hands on the disc (Come on Oct 26th).
But will 10.5 make any difference to my everyday life of email, internet, Pages 08, Word, iTunes, iLife etc on a Macbook with 10.4.10? I'm in the middle of a PhD thesis also

Come on sell me on Leopard.

    Dave

Spectra Photo on Grafton Streen told me they'd have it the 26th, they're pretty good with software, the sell iLife 08, iWork and Final Cut Studio amongst others.

And I presume that all of the 3G stores in city will have it too.

Wait for reviews & until after your thesis to upgrade -- although Time Machine could be a good idea for automated backups (in case you're the forgetful type).
Spaces could be good for managing hoards of windows too.

    Beta testers, what say you?

Meh, I'm waiting until after Christmas.
The macbook is only 7 months old and works fine and I think it's wise to hold off 2-3 months so you can read reviews and also any major problems will hopefully be identified and updated by then

I'm not going to be a software tester for Apple.

ISTR you had a version of Leopard under the developer thing and you dissed it then - you haven't changed your mind so?

Yes, if they have a G4 867MHz or faster.

My poor friend's Tower is only 800Mhz and old so he can't get it! He muttered some crap about Linux and not changing for the sake of change. I said if he likes, I can let him have a go on my Powerbook... :D

?? what's that acronym then? I learnt what TBYT means today! Someone got it in an email at work. harsh.

I think im getting a free copy of Leopard from Apple. Mind you... seeing what it did to a machine as an 'upgrade' with the dev release i think i might try it on a clean partition for a bit, just in case. but it tis loverly though

Just a little suggestion. With the immenent arrival of Leopard and its obvious importance to mac users, would it be useful to sticky and merge the more general leopard discussions?

EDIT: oopsie, i've just copped the merge has taken place!

    faceman wrote: »

yup I merged all the relevant posts, and left out the 'oh the shop is down' type ones. I was going to sticky but thought we have a few up already, and I know how much everyone hates scrolling through loads of stickies.. but... I'll sticky this for a while, until the release and teething problems are over.

the sticky certainly seems like a good plan,

Im buying looking to buy a Macbook pro soon, Im leagues behind you folks here and am a NOOB , DUGH:mad:! so sorry if this is dumb.

Anyway Im moving to mac for audio purposes, will this Leopard business be comparible to folks having trouble with Vista and drivers on PCs? Ya know certain software not supported for vista ?

I'll be in crack up country if I get a mac , get all my hardware and software together and find the drivers arent in place to run it on a leopard machine.

Am I making sense or talking complete jibber jabber?

    In the digi-abyss of ignorance,

Possibly Trev - I din't know what software you'll be running, but (say) if it's ProTools, I dunno if the software supports 10.5 (yet). No doubt it will in the future, but if the manufacturer recommends running it on 10.4, then that's what you should do.

Drivers will be less of a problem.

Now that Leopard is coming out, does anyone know how long security patches etc. will continue to be provided for Tiger? (Yes I did look at the Apple website!)

Got my Macbook in June, mostly use it on Linux  so there's no need to be upgrading OS X so long as it's still going to get security support.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Leopard will be on sale at Spectra on Friday link
*edit* the list now includes O2 shops.

Should be fine for a while yet - 10.3.9 is still supported, although things are starting to get a bit sticky with 10.5 coming - that means, judging by current events, that 10.4.x should be supported until 10.5.9 is about to be replaced ;)

    Many thanks Type17.
Somehow I doubt it, but do they publish a roadmap so that one can have some idea of when 10.6 is coming?

Based on the dates given (and missed) for Leopard, I wouldn't get too excited even if they did publish anything... ;)
