Is it ok to overeat (i.e. - stuff your face) to reach your desired calorie count?

I'm wondering if it's ok to eat enough food that I'm really stuffed for lunch/dinner in order to reach my desired calorie count?

I've heard quite a lot mentioned about eating many smaller meals over the course of the day but if I was doing that as well as eating very large lunches/dinners, would it be a bad thing? Basically, as mentioned in a different thread, I sometimes struggle to eat as much as I think I need to continue bulking up, though eating a large lunch/dinner would definitely help.

Eating lots in one go can actually zap your energy, you spend so much energy just trying to digest- think of the post christmas dinner slump.

You can get more caloire rich foods, like wholemeal bread, museli, peasnuts, drink milk. 100g of peanuts is around 600kcal, and it is very easy to snack on 100g of nuts during the day, a litre of milk is around 650kcal, litre of skim milk is still around 460kcal.

Also I think your body can only process so much protein per hour, so if you lash it all down in one sitting you may not get max benefits- and it disturbs your metabolism.

Probably trying to "bulk up", i.e. put on weight -but muscle not fat by lifting heavy weights (though you will nearly always put on some fat). You have to eat more to get more calories to grow the muscle. I have been on a calorie deficit or maintenance for a good while now. I am eating more at the moment for the winter to stave off colds and tonsilitis which I am prone to. But I have to remind myself to eat a lot of the time. For people trying to lose weight it is hard to believe! and can be somewhat annoying to hear it. Your stomach will shrink over time making you full a lot quicker. I have trouble getting 3500kcal of food into me now, when I was bigger I could have got twice that in me on a good(bad?) day.

Yeah as rubadub said I'm trying to bulk up. I'm not underweight - far from it seemingly after weighing myself using the electronic weighing machine in the gym this morning : 15st 8lbs (99kg). I'm not sure where this weight came from mind you as I don't look like I'm carrying it so maybe my concerns about not getting enough calories in my diet are a little bit unrealistic.

That's a stone and a half since I last weighed myself properly, which was over 6 months ago. Guess I must be doing something right!! Thanks for the feedback though :)

    SuperSi.
I wouldnt recommend that you increase the suze of your main meals drastically.
    So have brekkie, lunch, dinner
But in between those I would recommend having more food.

    e.g.
    7am: Brekkie
Approx 10am: Have another small meal, same size or not much bigger than brekkie (or a myoplex shake)
    1pm: Lunch
Approx 4pm: Have another small meal, same size or not much bigger than brekkie (or a myoplex shake)
    7pm: Dinner
9pm'ish:Start munching on nuts. I go through a 200gram bag in about 3 or 4 nights

If U wanna go crazy. Boil a few eggs. Wake up around 3am or 4am. Consume eggs. Go back to sleep. (Only if U are doing crazy weights. Apparently pro rugby players have a small meal in the middle of the night so they wont lose any weight while they sleep....)

Eating regularly is always preferable to binging. U also need to be working out at least 4 or 5 days a week to justify this kind of dedication.

    Hope this helps.

I'm a grazer so when things like work and stuff get in the way I tend to miss meals. If it's happening regularly you need to prepare better. That's the secret of eating all the time really!

I wouldn't do the stuffing thing TBH, just eat until you're sated.

Cool, thanks for the advice all. I think I'll stick to moderate main meals and reasonable 'in-between' meals. Thanks again!
