Been off the drink for a few months in preparation for the DC Marathon on Monday week, have all the hard training done and have begun to taper and rest for it, but as I'm at a wedding this weekend would it be okay to have a few drinks or should I completely steer clear of the stuff?

    Really depends on:

How your body reacts to drink, and how much you'll drink!

Whether the marathon is for a specific goal/time or just completion?

How you recover on the Sunday. If you're going for a run you will feel worse for wear.

I'd say enjoy a few beers, more from an enjoy life point of view over a performance point of view.

    Have fun dude!

Why spoil the good preparation so far? Keep off it to ensure you get the best out of your run. You've been off it a few months, another dry night won't kill you.

Best of luck in the marathon.

That's precisely the info I'm looking for mhate - if it will spoil my preparation then I'll stay off it. So my question is will it ruin my preparation?

Colm - I'm only running to finish the thing, not looking to do it in any particular time or anything as I am a complete novice runner. On a normal big night out I would have between 10-20 drinks, I'd be looking at having say 5 or 6 pints tops. Sunday is my day of rest so I won't have to run after my few drinks on Sat.

Then it is not a big deal, the drinks might slow your performance 1% but it doesnt matter. What you do not want is to be trying to beat a personal best, then missing by 2mins and forever wondering "what would have happened if I didnt have those 5 pints"- and cursing yourself.

I am a drinker myself and would be thinking "what would have happened if I had those 5 pints at the wedding- would have enjoyed myself more!";)

I dont think the pints will induce an injury or anything- if that is your worry.

Try some strychnine & brandy too! Though it might be illegal now!

when in serious trainin sometimes it okay to cut loose every once in a while as long as ya dont got too mad 5 or 6 would be grand and if ya really that worried bout it then every second drink try a pint of water keep your hydration up and also flush the alcohol out of your system quicker its like everythin anythin in moderation and balance trust me i continued drinkin the odd occasion throughout my trainin last year and i finish in 2.47

Best of luck in the race!!!!

When did you get the pints in? One every 10km or so?

I know a guy who runs marathons regularly and has been for years. The last one he did he had a few pints the night before the marathon and said it had no affect on him at all...

You'll be grand with a few drinks this weekend and well recovered by the time Monday week rolls around...

Cheers folks, had about 5 pints and a half bottle of wine so I managed to stay in moderation.

Felt absolutely fine the next morning and had buckets of energy so all's well.

Now to just get this marathon thing out of the way!!!
