Breaking off security tags..

    Odd one here!

    Was shopping at the weekend and picked up a few things in the menswear section of Dunnes. Just noticed this morning that they left the security tag on a jumper i bought..... honestly! :D

    The bag (with receipt) was thrown out yesterday evening, and i'm apprehensive to go back into Dunnes without the receipt and won't be in town til Saturday at least so any chance i could break off the security tag? But it looks like there's a warning of it that dye will leak when it's broken.

    Any Dunnes staff care to enlighten me? Probably will end up going into Dunnes at the weekend but if i can avoid it without ruining my jumper, i will!

    (the "OMG... yiz such a thievin' bastid" can start now! ;))

    not sure how the dye pack tags work, bot for the regular ones you just need a REALLY strong magnet and you're in business

    if you put it in the freezer the ink will freeze then avail of the hammer option

    Exact same thing happened to me in the states. I fecked up big time and ended up with a handful of dye. The dye is liquid so you might try sticking the clothing in the freezer overnight before breaking off the tag. Then again they might use an anti-freeze liquid so you'll coloured and freezing.

    I used to work in tesco and we got this a few times. Just go back in with the jumper and explain it to them. It's a common enough thing. But if you do want to break it off post up a picture here and I'll see if it resembles any of the ones we had in tesco. None of these had ink in them.

    The wife got an Oasis bag with security tag still on for her birthday from my sister. She rang them and they said not to bring it back, but find proof of purchase first.

    I think she's just going to keep it on it rather than go back to me sis and embarrass them etc.

    The magnet should work on the dye ones also, are they designed to burst when forced? so the magnet should easily release the latch without damaging the ink cartridge.

    You lost the receipt. But how did you pay? Cash? The store will record its sales, and if you can describe the item, when purchased (time, date), and how much you paid, they should be able to source it. Check or card? If you used a check, it's a record itself. If card, there will be a record that you can refer the dept store to. Do you remember the retail sales person who helped you? Desciption? (if you don't remember name?). They might remember too, especially if you chatted with them about football, or style, or whatever?

    I would call them first and try to sort it out over the phone.

    If you want to make a scene then ring them & tell them of your plight & the inconvenience it is going to cause you to bring it back & ask to be compensated for your journey i.e. petrol, luas or bus fees etc. If they agree to sort your inconvenience then, no problem. Just remember what till you were at, the time & the date. A record of the sale can be pulled off the electronic journal & security cameras can also show your presence.

    If they will try to fob you off then tell them it is not good enough & you are going to write to <Name> (Second in Command/Head Office) to complain. Watch/listen to the attiude change....

    Or you could just bimble in to customers service and have it removed and say nothing.

    I used to work for Dunnes & their attitudes to this sucked big time.This happened to a customer two years ago and when the customer went to another High Street store to continue shopping the alarm barriers activated when the customer entered that said store and the customer was searched by that stores security.

    The customer successfully sued Dunnes this year for negligence for the sum of ..... lets say she got more than €4,999 + costs... settled out of court... I know because I was there..... PM me if you need more advice.

    Quite a story Trojan911.

    I honestly didn't think Dunnes would really have a problem, especially as the menswear section in my local Dunnes is seperate to the rest of the store and you're at the counter when you walk in the door.

    They can't believe i honestly took it, and returned to the scene of the crime to get them to remove it.

    I payed via my Laser card with another 2 or 3 items so best bet is to take a statement with me of the transaction in Dunnes last Saturday.

    Nah.. legal action is the last thing on my mind.

    You're from Sligo, AC so you know the Dunnes branch i mean? The old one (not Cranmore, in Wine Street Car Park) and the menswear section has the til at the front of the store.

    If i walk in and go straight to the till, i wouldn't imagine there'd be a problem.

    Yeah stick it in a bag just so that it doesn't look like you pulled it off the shelf. Also you are going to be going to a cashier. They're not going to call a manager over this. They will most likely just apologise take off the tag and say goodbye, that's what I would do.

    Its happened to me quite a few times in roches, pull and bear, etc but i suppose i usually had the receipt
    at least youre not on holidays and only noticed it back home and at least its dunnes with shops everywhere
    The shops know this can happen so just ring them, get the name of the person you spoke to on the phone and go back to that store
    Dunnes are usually pretty good with those things.
    The workers are only human - it happens

    Going back to the shop is your best bet, but if you want to feel über manly, the powerful magnet thing should work.

    Read my post again, take your time, don't rush, then digest.......it starts with "If". They are options.. I didn't suggest any legal action... I gave a scenario of what happened when a customer had the same thing happen.

    As for wrecking some fellas head, then maybe it needs to be wrecked. He/She is not controlling their staff thus the customer service is lacking..

I really don't think that this is something to kick up a big fuss about, it is a simple mistake for someone to make.

    Not dismissive on my side, but that's what they would hope of you. I bought a garment from Tesco last year, got home & discovered a security tag on it after making a forty mile round trip. I rang them and informed them. They told me to bring it back for removal. I asked for the cost of the petrol as it would be another forty mile round trip. The manager refused on the grounds he didn't have access to petty cash, which is complete hogwash as all store managers have access to petty cash.

    I argued it was their mistake, he still refused. I rang their Head Office & got it sorted immediatelyl. Got €20 for petrol and a €20 gift voucher as a sorry for the error. The manager didn't even have the guts to hand it to me when I returned to have the tag removed, he gave it to his second in command to hand to me.

    Now if initial contact had been, "Yes, sorry about that, come in & we'll sort you for petrol" then I wouldn't have had a problem. It's the fob off process I despise. It is complete lack of customer service & Dunnes are exactly the same.

    Sure it was a mistake and no doubt it will continue to happen.

    How did you pay for it? Credit card/laser? Can you use that to confirm it was bought?

    I've always found being courteous and patient gets you a lot farther than kicking up a stink.
    Always worked for me, apart from problems with I had with Sky (although it seems they are trained by the Herman Georbles School of Customer Service).

    Seems a bit extreme to start explain the situation to customers.. i don't think it'll be a problem anyways.

    i bought a pair of throusers for work about 6 months back still have the tag on them.... and also funny story i didnt notice and wore them into work on the first day with the tag on them! Its more of a running gag now.

    While I disagree with the manager lying to you I think he was better off waiting for orders from above before giving you any cash. Some managers get a lot of grief from immediate superiors for this kind of thing.

    The problem with him was he wasn't moving on his stance. He never mentioned his Head Office once & was very dismissive.

    It was only because I was in retail management at the time & I knew he could do this, but there are people out there who are not up to scratch on their entitlements and that's where the store manager will ride them. Iv'e seen it so many times & people just let it go because they are unsure.

    Like I said in an earlier post, had he [Tesco] been more positive in his initial dealings with me I wouldn't have taken the steps I did, I literally only worked a five minute drive from his store but it became a point of principle in the end.

    I don't see an issue with the OP getting the tag removed anyway with or without the receipt, they cannot refuse to remove it when they have the option of looking up the electronic journal, but if they get funny with the OP then I have outlined some options the OP can take, only because I know how the company works & how issues get resolved. I don't like to see people getting mucked about through the fault of others.

    You are the worst kind of customer. I hate when I'm in a queue and someone starts blabbering to me about a problem they have with the store/company. It's even worse for the poor assistant who has to deal with it. Fair enough if they aren't doing anything for you, but at least give them and the management a chance.

    As has already been explained the OP has numerous other ways to solve the situation. He doesn't have to go in with his guns blazing. Explain the situation, bring as much evidence as possible and be polite about it. If that doesn't work THEN he can complain.

    To lodge the call with their customer services, so I would arrange a time to enter the store as I did not want any further fuss when I re entered the store should the alarm system scream at me (which it did do when I called back) so their security would be aware etc.

    It's when I jokingly said to the customer services on initial contact "Who's going to pay for the petrol?" That's when they had a serious sense of humour failure & I saw the other side of their customers service. I was immediately put on hold for about four mins and when I next spoke to someone it was a supervisor who entered into an immediate dismissive attitude about how they don't do "petrol" expenses.

    At that stage I just asked to speak to the manager who was equally dismissive. I won't be spoken down to by anyone let alone some jumped up supervisor or manager. So, as stated, it became a point of principle. Hope that clears up your query.

    I have walked out of Tescos at least 3 times with a security tag attached to items cos the cute girl on checkout forgot to remove them , Dumb bitch ....it's embarresing

    I work in Dunnes. I didn't know menswear had security tags? Thought it was only Savida..and then it's only SOME Savida stuff, head-wrecking. If the tag is black and eh circular, then just bash it off a really strong magnet, or bring it back in. The magnets on the tills only work if you do it really fast.

    Most Savida (the classy range, and the one that did all the Karen Millen knock-offs) stuff does, it apparently doesn't depend on price what does and what doesn't. Some of their coats are €175, so yes they have tags. Nothing else in ladieswear does, some bikinis do (???) and now apparently menswear do. I'm in the Stephens Green one, don't even know if Manor Mills would have them.

    Basquille, there IS dye in the tags, red yellow and blue I think.
