Canon 400D price seems good

I just saw the Canon 400D for €669 on Komplett.ie http://http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=324991 when you take the €70 cashback into account you get the camera for €599 this seems to be a good price for a decent bit of kit. Am I missing anything as the camera is 750 - 770 in the reputable shops in town. I have looked at the cost of the camera on ebay and it seems to only be about 50 - 100 cheaper so when you factor in the risk of warranty getting hit for VAT/Duty I think it makes sense to got with this.

Also Pixmania still sell this camera for €700+

Its Friday Credit card in hand temptation is getting stronger the closer we get to 5pm
My wife would like me to be pursuaded to this is not a necessary purchase or a good deal can you let me know if she is right or not. :)

    Cheers

    Cionn

Froget that mate, check this :

    400D (with body) : £379 = €547
    http://www.tekmo.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=204

However, the standard 18-55 lens isn't great. Buy the body only and use the money saved to buy something better instead:
    http://www.tekmo.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=205
400D (Body Only) for £339 which is €490 and then €70 cashback from Canon = €420 - Bargain!

Oh and Free Delivery to Ireland too!

    I just saved you €120+ !!!

Anyone ever bought off these before???

Will you get the cashback if you buy from them or do you have to buy in Ireland?

Was going to get this in NY in Dec ($595) but this is every cheaper with the cashback plus a european guarantee!!

sounds great another few quid off makes all the difference. Has anyone received their camera from these guys yet or had any problems with them ? I'm two clicks away from doing the deed.

...when you take the €70 cashback into account...
I could be mistaken, but I think this offer has expired.

ED: Actually, I never got the money back... hmmm.

I wonder how they are warranty wise. I will see what google tells me. Bought the misses a apir of shoes today so I'm in the good books this weekend is my best shot at swinging this "essential" home device.

    50mm f1.8. Around €100

Wooo Hoo..go for it buddy !!!

What about the 28mm-135mm IS Usm lens in argos..?? retailing for 289...should be up nearer 500. This is an EF lens so if you upgrade the camera this lens will work with all canon cameras...

Edit..some people recommend getting the Kit lens so as to have it as a back up...plus if your ever selling the camera you'l have a lens to sell with it

Best value lens you can get - everone says it.

    I also bought this: http://cgi.ebay.ie/Sigma-17-70mm-17-70-f-2-8-4-5-F2-8-4-5-Marco-DC-0100_W0QQitemZ110178566400QQihZ001QQcategoryZ30070QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
About €240 all in. Came highly recommended as a good all rounder.

Good price, but I'd be a bit concerned about being able to claim the rebate. The claim to "..source our products from authorised distributors in USA , UK , EUROPE & HONG KONG " which might result in getting a PFO when applying for the rebate.

Typhoon: Did you ask them whether the camera qualifies for the rebate? Though even worst comes to worst and it doesn't, the price is still not at all bad!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Cionn

Typhoon, can you post a note when you get delivery. Once your happy i think i'll place my order

    Guys
The following are Canon's approved E-tailers taken from its website - no listing for TEKMO :

    amazon.co.uk
    ASK Electronics
    Bestcameras
    Bristol Cameras
    Buyacamera
    CameraWorld
    Castle Cameras
    Calumet Photographic
    Devon Camera Centre
    Digital Camera Company
    Equipment Express
    Freehand (Just Canon)
    Jacobs Digital Photo & Video
    London Camera Exchange

    Park Cameras
    Photo Optix
    T4 Cameras Ltd
    Walters Photographic
    Warehouse Express
    Wilkinson Cameras

Typhoon - I have no doubt that you made a good purchase however I doubt they will honour the rebate.

Please let us know your thoughts ASAP. I have until tomorrow to either buy in the USA for a 400D or go with Tekmo.

Are there disadvantages from buying in the States?

    thanks all

Does anyone know if I will need to buy a European power supply for an 400d if I buy it in USA?

Just a standard US->UK convertor will do the job, no need to buy a UK/Irish-specific power supply.

guys, i don't see many of the other big online shops in that list eg komplett or pixmania does that mean you wouldn't get the cash back if you bought off them either ?

No, those should be fine, they'll be selling European stock. The problem with the rebates will probably arise with non-European stock, whether it's ordered direct from USA/Hong Kong or an EU based retailer sourcing "grey import" goods outside the EU. That said, the company running the cashback (it's not actually Canon) don't seem to be the sharpest knives on the block, so send everything in and hope for the best (keep a copy of everything you send though)

I ordered on 5th October and still have not received it - I called a few days ago and they said it was normally 5 working days, but with the strike it would be 7. I'll call again today

I ordered one on eBay and got it 2 days later. It came with an american stlye plug charger but bought a convertor for €6 in the local shop.

    Does the trick nicely...

    Just bought my 400D on Amazon.com - 500 Euro - can't wait -..

I saw the same camera in Blanchardstown Shopping Centre for 850 Euro - taking the p**s..

Will that purchase not be liable for VAT and/Or Duty if stopped which I would imagine would be €150 - 200 if it is picked up. Sounds like a bit of a risk compared to the option above

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

Surprised that Amazon actually allowed you order electronics. Amazon.com usually don't post electronics outside North America and amazon.co.uk don't ship to Ireland because of the WEEE regulations

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭Beano

How did you get amazon.com to ship a camera outside the US? I've just tried it and they definitely do not allow it.

I got my 400D delivered from Tekmo today. Have to say they are very helpful when they call and happy to tlak about any product they do not have but will source for me. They said they ahve lots of connections in Hong Kong etc.

RE: the rebate - it says cut out the barcode and send it with the receipt to canon.
    1) What counts as a receipt - can I print my order confirmation?
    2) Above the barcode, there is a sticker with a 10 digit number and "Canon 400D" - but it is "handwritten" - will this make a difference?

Zascar , go to your account in TEKMO , click view order and you can print of the uk receipt in there , Thats what i did on the last canon promotion in summer and it worked , shame about cutting the box up for the barcode ....

Well I put the order in this morning I will post again when I receive the camera. I think I'll do an evening camera course to try to get the best out of the camera. Looking forward to taking some nice shots if all goes well.

Even if the rebate falls through this is the best deal I have seen out there. I think it is a better option rather than going down the ebay route and possibly getting stung for VAT and Duty. The address for the rebate is in Tipperary so there may even be a bit of Irish camaraderie.

The rebates literally take months to process, and the company that handle it for Canon aren't the sharpest knives in the block. I wouldn't expect anybody that's sent their rebate off in this current batch to see anything much this side of Christmas.

I'm happy to announce that at 2:30 today my Friend the UPS Courier provided me with a box that contained a beautiful baby camera I plan to call it baby Canon 400D. After such a long journey I am letting him recharge his batteries as we speak.

All in all a very pleaseant delivery helpfully nursed along by Tekmo. I have to admit a good online purchase so far. Hong Kong stock for sure.

Stay tuned for the rebate issues they will commence later this week.

    I got mine from here
    http://www.digicombos.com/product_p/cnxti3clgb4.htm

It states you get a Micro drive but I got a flash card instead, they say because of complaints.
    Camera kit 1149.49
    Postage cost $249.99

    =$1400

983.323 EUR at todays exchange rate.

I searched long and hard to find the best deal available and I reckon that this was it.

Just thought I'd let you know.

P.S customer service was pretty good too.

Just thought I'd post to say that I'm really enjoying the camera a very good purchase so far. I thought I'd put a sample photo up of the humble bathroom rubber duck. Not bad for standard settings.

I got my rebate in the post the other day, took about 2 weeks for them to send me the cheque fo €70. I bought a factory refurbished camera for €520 so well worth the investment. :)
