    Hi guys,

I bite the bullet yesterday and purchased a playstation 3. I shopped around for deals and the best deal out there is in HMV. For 514 quid, I got a 60GB playstaion 3 with Fifa 08, Motorstorm and Resistance. I know you can get cheaper deals but the quality of games arent as good.

I believe that I didnt do to badly.

Not bad, you basically got Fifa08 for 20 odd quid on top of the €499 price for the bundle.

    I hope to get one tomorrow....enjoy :D

I love my ps3 so much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,398 ✭✭✭ongarite

I was in HMV in Blanchardstown and the deal is better than the OP.
    Its 519.99 for 60GB PS3 with either Motorstorm/Resistance + Heavenly Sword/RR7 + FIFA08.
Its 499.99 with the 2 above sets of games + free BD movie, Casino Royale or Spiderman 3.

I'm tempted by Motorstorm + Heavenly Sword.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 993 ✭✭✭bigslick

Is the above offer (Blanch HMV) in all HMVs??
I so ill probably be going in to pick up one as thats best offer ive seen.

also is it easy to set up online play for ps3, as wanna play motorstorm as soon as i can :)

Got the 60gb deal in HMV, well worth it.

Got heavenly sword and love it, even if it is short. The graphics are stunning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 993 ✭✭✭bigslick

yeah am thinking of getting motorstorm and heavenly sword myself. they look so good.

is online play hard to set up if i have wireless internet?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

Got it online easy but haven't set up the account yet!

I kinda still dunno what to do thou.

I dont really need the backward compatibility of the 60gb model. so is it better for me just to get the 40gb and those same games or what?
    cheers

Well if you're to get the 40gb with those two games seperately it'll end up costing you more than if you got the 60gb bundle pack with BC

I bought the 60GB version with F1 and Resistance in Xtravision for 499. He knocked a few quid off the extra controller and 2 PS2 games so the lot was 560.

Dissappointed with PS2 backwards compaibility which is why I opted for the 60GB, neither of the games I got worked straight off. Needed a software update which makes them display but now the controllers won't :(

Also not impressed with DVD upscaling, very noticable glitches on the screen when working via HDMI and 1080i. Games are awesome though, love F1. Resistance is nice but I'd rather a keyboard and mouse so might see if it can be controlled that way.

nope you can not use keyboard and mouse for any FPS on ps3 yet untill unreal tournament 3 is out (next month AFAIK)

Went in to Cork City this morning. Game, Gamestop, Smyths, Xtravision all doing the usual choice of 2 games for €499.

HMV doing as above poster said, €499 Resistance/Motorstorm and RR/Heavenly/F1. For €20 extra pick from FIFA, Tiger Woods or Fight Night.
I got this and took Tiger Woods.

Virgin have, I think 3 Bundles on the 60Gb.

Usual choice of the two games + Blu Ray disk - €500

Usual choice of 2 + Extra six axis - €500

No choice of usual 2 - One chart game instead - €500 (I think thats the bundle)

It does have WIFI. Just check amazon....Sony have said on their website that the 40gb model is going to replace the 60gb one once it hits the market.

Must admit that I'm tempted. This could be a bit of an impulse buy.

Oh wait, is that you can pick 2 games from the usual choice or only pick one game from a usual choice of 2?

the ps3 is no better than the xbox 360 the graphics are the same in both.they delayed the launch of the psp due to some fault.psp vs 360.theres no difference except the price and people think that if it costs more its better thats not always the case ive seen perfume and aftershave (that would cost an arm and a leg that smell like a public jacks)theres a kid on my road who howled for a 360 then wen the ps3 came out howled for that he got both and now there left lying there he got both wen they were first launched used them a couple of times and that was it

i completely agree, anyone buying a new console who hasnt got a next gen one yet id say get the 360, no doubt about it

i only got a ps3 coz im banned from live for using a modded machine, so i had the choice of a second xbox, or a ps3 for online play, and i didnt really see the point of having 2 xboxes

400euro and you get a blu ray player??? it's far better than 360 with it's specs..

    specs mean sfa

devs are having trouble programming for it, and the lineup of games is pretty much awful

bluray means nothing to me either, ive got a massive dvd collection and im buggered if im gonna start buying everything on bluray

bluray means nothing to me either, ive got a massive dvd collection

Its the best DVD upscaler around for the money , that should interest you if you have a big DVD collection ,

Also , it wont break , or at least it only has a 0.5 % fail rate , as opposed to the 360's 30% , or 1 in 4 fail rate. Meaning that once you buy a PS3 , which is a brilliant media player by the way , it wont spend a big chunk of its time back at Microsoft getting fixed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

well ive my xbox 2 years next month sans problem to be honest

i have a dvd player, when i buy a games system i buy it for games

call me old fashioned but thats how i work

While your on that Mathias, the software upgrade the PS3 installs at switch on adds some extra options to the media icons namely "Media Server". When selected the unit goes searching for a while and returns with something along the lines of "Sorry I can't find one" Do you know what it's looking for ? I kinda hoped it would find my shared iTunes library - is it only Windows MCE I wonder ?

Any help appreciated and sorry for going off topic.

Its looking for any computer or device thats on your wireless network with media on it , obviously this media has to be set to be shared on that network , so for instance I have Vista , and I have media sharing enabled , and it finds that and allows me to play all my mp3's over the network , that type of thing.

The network settings are important , here are a few links on setting your PC so that the PS3 can see it ,

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=47608

    http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/connectdlna.html

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=854993

Any Pc running XP , Vista , or WMP11 should have no problem , if you have Nero showtime , that has a Unp streamer built in and that does a good job too in that the PS3 will see it straight away.
Providing you have your itunes tracks on your hard drive , and you are managing them as opposed to letting itunes manage them , then it will see and play them too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭mathias

    i have a dvd player

Thats " upscaling " dvd player that I said , big big difference , especially if you have a HDTV , there are not many decent upscaling DVD players around for the price of a PS3 , and the PS3 is one of the best upscaling DVD players around. Check out the reviews on www.avforums.com

Im glad things are so black and white for you , very few can afford a separate device for all their tasks , given the capabilities of the PS3 , its a sinful waste to use it just for games ! In my opinion , thats the least of its uses. ( good though it is ) .

its a games console, i wouldnt consider games to be the least of its uses for 99% of people who buy it

i also have no need for an upscaling dvd player

my pictures are fine as they are, im not one to wet myself over a smidgeon more definition

if i can see it clearly, its fine by me

Any chance you could expand on that ? I have iTunes sharing music on a dedicated machine on the network and any other iTunes machine sees that and connects. Amorak in Linux finds it as does WMP11 on XP but the PS3 doesn't find it at all. Is there a particular port is searches on do you know?
Sorry for asking again but this would really finish off the setup I have and get rid of the second machine I use for music. Thanks again.

    1/4 is not most

    in fairness

and that 1/4 is just potentially dodgy machines

but yes, ms made a complete and utter balls of that

OK , the way I have mine set up is , I have all my music in a certain folder , all tagged the way I like them , And all with cover art etc.

I set itunes so that I manage the music , not itunes , this is an option in itunes preferences , the reason this is important is that if you let itunes manage them it imports and obfuscates them all , meaning you cant share them.

I then point itunes to the music folder I have , by choosing add folder , the folder is read only , that way itunes adds the folder to the library , but doesnt change anything.

That folder can then still be shared over any wireless network and the PS3 can see it no problem , any files that itunes has " managed " however , cant be seen on the ps3 , or indeed most other file sharing programs.

If however , you can see your collection on a linux machine , then chances are its already in a format that the ps3 can see and you should just step through the network settings ( for the ps3 ) in the links that I posted and see if theres a setting not right , as you should be able to see them on your ps3.

As far as I know there is no particular port , it just has to be a Upnp or Dlac type network connection for the ps3 to see it. Most PCs can handle that no problem.

If the Heroes was HD and you say that then it isn't set up correctly. The difference between HD and SD is huge.

Heroes is HD (got it from the States) and I'm sure that the system is set up correctly. Yeah sure you can see individual strands of hair etc. but I don't feel that the difference is shocking. My girlfriend watches with me and she can't notice the difference at all.

Maybe it depends on the material, the display and your own eyes, but any time I go into DID or Currys and look at their TVs, and see the HD video playing on some screens and the SD video playing on others, the difference is immediate and huge, IMO.
