It's gotten ominously quiet on the Instruments board as of late...

We used to have blazing discussions going on for countless pages, gas-inducing threads showcasing lots of fancy things, and overall it was possibly one of the most enjoyable, and friendly boards, but it's seemed to have ground down to a halt recently. What gives?

This place used to be such a hotbed for great discussion, that it's kinda sad to see it in this state.

Ahh, it won't be long more now Karl, we are fast approaching that time of year again , where the GAS gland gets tickled and teased, where we all here try and justify or get folk here to approve a big purchase :D
But yeah, it has been unusually quiet in here for a wee while, nothin to worry about :)

Sorry I'm just trying to pay off my credit card bill now :(

There may be another GAS related thread from me next month, me gots a trip to Germany on the cards! :D

I agree though, the latest threads just seem to be about repairs / breakages and useless comparison threads. I mean how the fupp can you compare a Tele and an SG?!? Two totally different beasts.

We just have to wait for Winter NAMM and Christmas for the big threads to appear.

There's a season for gas? Is it in the pollen or something? Do antihestimines help?

It has been a bit quiet alright all the same..probably lost a few old regulars or something..

Yeah, the Doc ain't around much lately, but I wouldn't think that's the sole cause of this lull.

Loads of people aren't around as much. Doc, Ancient1, John, me.

Yeah, well nobody minds you not being around. :p

It's true though, there's quite a few people missing. Maybe we should let Rozie back in just to heat up discussion again? We can have threads about how to make fart noises with a fuzz factory. :D

yeah.... all the discussions in the instruments forums just depress me. i got's no monies for new toys :(

Yep all year round..........or just when one has sufficient funds
Is it in the pollen or something?
Nah, it lies deep deep inside oneself
    Do antihestimines help?
Bloody hope not, I quite enjoy my bouts of GAS :D

    I'm still here - don't despair! :p

I do check in almost every evening just to see what's happening, but I just haven't had the time or energy to post, discuss, contribute or drool.

I've just been so insanely busy in work for the last 3-4 months (it's seasonal in my job), that by the time I get home I just don't have the energy or interest to post. But I do keep an eye out for threads of interest (such as the Gentlemen Behold Thread Series, ha).

I've also been dealing with some other personal sh1t and I'm up to my eyes in debt, so it's probably a good thing that it's been quiet around here, you bunch of GAS-inducing mofos...:p

It'll pick up again, don't worry KH :)

Oh, and as far as I know Doc still doesn't have broadband at home. But he assures me he does have electricity and running water.

There is a lot of reading but not much to post about. Like most of you I'm here everyday (almost) reading, and as Karl said the discussion, debate etc has stopped temporarily.

It will be bach soon. (note the incorrect spelling of back)
    Right there | LOOK! :D

It's a sad sad day when people are practicing instead of talking about gas.

Yeah, I should probably go post a thread about gas. :)

How's that Lonestar going for you anyway? It is you who has one, isn't it?

Could be a bigger factor in the lull than we ever realised.

If anyone feels like starting a gear of the year thread I'd have a few pics to add on in a week or two(fingers crossed:rolleyes:).

FWIW I have started going to more specific sites
    relating to my interests

    jazzmaster - offset guitars.com
    les paul - mylespaul.com
    toob amps - ampage.com

these get an awful lot more traffic
    and hence more answers

whats the point in asking about the bridge issues
on a jazzmaster when no-one here owns one!

I have also found that its predominately
    metal related discussion here,
on "offsets" there is really good discussion on my kind of music

    half the threads here are
..."heres my new ibanez shredder"...thread!!
(black with seven strings active emg's etc etc) sorry karl! ;)

still like the place though, its just been a bit boring recently :(

its seems that a lot of people here stumble in from the rest of boards!
with threads like "first guitar" "choose an amp" etc, which is all fine
its just not that intersting for someone who's playing 15yrs+

Karl uses DiMarzios, not EMGs! Also, red would be the prefered guitar colour. The only thing you got right is the 7 strings bit. ;)

You should put a floyd rose in there; clear the bridge issues right up...

    ha!
a floyd indeed! i dont think i'll swap my dreamy vibrato for a divebomber!
it's be like putting texas specials in an RG!!
(i have a floyd guitar anyway for my metal moments)

I wonder if Fender have any plans for a seven string jazzmaster
they could sharpen up the horns and ditch the scratchplate
and do something with that headstock and damned 7.25 fretboard!!

there you go, bit of banter was all I needed to come home!

Yeah sure has, looks like a lot of us were droppin' in alright but nothin' really tickled our fancy.
Ya throw up a few pics and hey presto, GAS rears it's ugly head :D
Think a GAS sticky might help??

Nah. Throwing all the gas into one thread would be messy as hell. As it is, you can have seperate gas threads about your 27 fret floyd equipped shred machine, or threads about your vintage twanger, or amps or effets. Some things I think are best kept to seperate discussions where they can breathe and grow on their own.

The world of science needs me. I've only been able to pop my head into the odd thread here, normally skip by the GAS ones because they depress me. Although there might be some mini-GAS threads from me soon.

There isn't really much in the way of actual discussion going on, there seems to be very little of the excitement about new brands or designs that made the forum interesting a couple of years ago, or even just soaking up the beauty of a battered strat or some other pic put up by someone. Everybody's got their little brand list in their sigs and there's very little deviation from those brands regardless of what the topic is. I still check the forum out once or twice a week, but there ain't much to see tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Hmm, I'd agree with you there Doc about the little excitement about new stuff. There's quite a few new things that have come out recently, and the lack of excitement is kinda crap. Can't blame people about sticking to their brand though, that's always happened and it's really nothing new.

I do think I've managed to squeeze some more juice back into the old girl with this thread and some others. I mean, when was the last time we've seen a Chris Guitars thread? Old times, eh? :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

There's no shortage of new people posting here, but most of it is just for help or advice, and they're never to be seen again after getting their answers.

The guys getting into heated dicussions (or arguments :D) are mostly still the old regulars, and I guess there's only so many times you can discuss the same things without some new opinions being injected in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭fish-head

You know.. since I got my Gretsch, my GAS has been practically non-existant.

    Hey Lads!

I have a floyd trem on my old BC rich custom ( twas made for Jimmy Smith, ye oldies may remember him!)
I have a block of wood unceremoniously jamming it at present to get the action down a bit. Jimmy had it set high for slide work.

Anyhow i was thinking of trying to get hold of an old Ibanez rg550 coz when i was younger i wanted one but could not afford it. At one stage it was THE guitar to have if you were a metal fan! Now i am older and more of a blues and anything interesting fan.

Love the BC rich though, needs a paintjob as worn to bits!

Recently bought a fender 1000 amp, too powerful but nice sound, tube preamp solid state power. Lovely clean and nice on mild distortion.

Am also expecting arrival of a Roland cube this week. Will post impressions upon trial!!!!

Wow.Only getting to reply now cos the site was down on Thursday, Wedding on Friday, Hangover on Saturday, and drinking again now :D. I spent the afternoon trying out bits form Guitarmasterclass.net. Pretty cool site for learning new bits and pieces.

Karl. Yes I have the Mesa Lonestar but unfortunatly its is not used as often as it should. I keep it up in the attic room but can only really play at the weekend in between all the family **** that needs to be done :(. In the evening it is too loud so I generally play and practise using the Cube and the Tonelab.

It is a really sweet amp and when I eventually find that detached house on land with a detached garage I'll play the **** our of it. :) I wait patiantly and patiently I wait. Don't think I'll need another amp for what I like playing but whoever says you NEED all the amps eh!

I don't know if you need all the amps, but one amp that does a lot of things is always good. See that big Mesa Boogie I posted over in the Amps thread? The one with all the knobs? That'd be the Roadster, and the first 2 channels are taken straight from the Lone Star, the next 2 being Rectifier, so there's quite a bit of versatility to be had there.

Even better; it's got the Clean and Fat modes from the Lonestar, but also two extra modes, Tweed and Brit as well. There is a LOT of sounds in there, damn versatile amp.

Oh, wow. Now it's a pity you have to switch those manually. If only there was an amp that had all those modes, but they were midi switchable... Oh wait! :p

Well man, the truth is, an EQ, gain or volume setting that works well on the Brit mode won't necessarily sound good on the Fat mode (or whatever).

Yeah that is one mofo amp but I'm one of the less is better types (old you see). I tend to find one or two tones that I really like and then subtly change them with the way I play. At least that's the theory anyway :p
