    Hi Guys,

I'm 32 and want to Join a Gym in the Maynooth area for a social outlet and to lose some weight.I've considered the following in Blanchardstown

The Westside in Blanch has a lot of Bad Press here so I;m gonna give that a miss.I thought of the Aquatic Centre too but when I was over there it was empty and got the impression that it was not used much despite it being relatively cheap..Its also been mentioned here that its a bit small.

I'm near Maynooth and that leaves the Glenroyal fitness centre which is expensive but has a pool.Does anyone know anything about it or been here?

If not is there any recomendations for Gyms in the area?

I would apreciate your help with this?

    Regards

    MM.

Yeah i was a member in the glen royal for a year;) Good gym with plenty of weights and cardio equipment..Pool is nice too but a bit small. You could always get a guided tour of these places and see which one suits you best.

    Thanks Guys,

Just one more thing though.I eventually found a thread about the Glenroyal which said the male to female ratio was high with the male being higher.

Anyone know what its like in the Uni?

If female is higher then I'm sold:)

Oh dear... I don't wish to sound harsh, but guys like you are the reason girls don't feel comfortable in the gym.

Hasn't every mixed gym got more male members, go with the one that's closest to home/nearest to work

You want to join a gym going on how many women are there?? Yeah great reason to join a gym!

I'm in the Glenroyal, no complaints but this is the first gym I've joined so I don't have much to go on. It is expensive though.

Well I don't drink,Smoke or do drugs so I have to think a bit more laterally to find a social outlet. So get off your Self Righteous pedestal.

BTW you can't speak for anyone but yourself. So at the risk of sounding harsh perhaps its people like you who are arrogant enough to think they know what people are thinking are the reason people are uncomfortable in the Gym or anywhere else.

A female poster passed an almost identical comment in reverse and I didn't see you passing any negative commentary about it.

My reasons for joining the Gym are twofold as I stated in my initial post.My comment was innocent enough and I only asked it because it was previously asked by another female poster regarding the Glenroyal.

If I go to a Gym to meet women then there is no harm or crime in doing so.I met my previous partner at a yoga class (mostly attended by women).I didn't make anyone feel "uncomfortable" and no one acted like I was some sort of "pervert" or stalker. The poster Hanley has the arrogance to assume I'm doing something unsavoury. Most of the women I know are well capable of dealing with unwanted attention. If women were the shrinking violets Hanley described then they wouldn't go outside the door.

    .

Well you did just proclaim on the board that you wanted to break one of golden rules of gym ed-a-kit (I cant spell it )

The gym is not a pick up joint , that idea went out in the 80’s:rolleyes: (about a week after it started) and "The poster Hanley" spends a lot of time in the gym so just maybe he knows what he is talking about

Now look who’s assuming things , you said “most” of so does that make it ok for you to make the other’s fell uneasy??? They paid their money to go and work out not to be hit on . If you want an outlet to find a women try a speed dating or a singles website

Tbh i have found gyms not to be the most social of places, been a member of a good few. The only one that i have found to be a social place is Pinnacle and thats a pretty unique gym.

Anyhow sorry my point is that if you are looking to get fit and lose weight in a social manner would you consider taking up an activity?

Etiquette is the word you’re looking for. Maybe you can tell me what these rules are and where they are written in stone. But don’t bother if their not in any Gyms policy.

I might try speed dating. I might try a website. But I think I’ll try a Gym first. What you Hanley or any other self proclaimed Gym cop happens to think about it doesn’t matter a damn to me. I don’t care if you or Hanley eat sleep and **** in the Gym what goes on in a conversation between me and another person is none of your business. If I offend anyone they can report me and if I break the Gyms policy or rules I will be happy to apologize and/or leave.

I also said “most” of in reference to the women “I know” unlike Hanley who was attempting to speak for all women which is even more comical if he is a man as you say.

You obviously spend a lot of time paying attention to what others are doing in Gym’s. This would cause a lot more unease than me having a conversation with someone and a coffee after.

    Nice emoticon technique BTW;)

I would agree ac I have used the one in work. But work is work no matter what you do and I don't want to go back in there on my day off.

I'm as self conscious as the next person so I've know intention of using a Gym as a "pick up joint" which is the atitude that was taken to me by a couple of people in response to an "off the cuff" remark

Anyway I've made up my mind and and I thank you and the other broad minded posters who helped and were able to keep their judmentalism under wraps.

    Mad man,

Why are you getting so wound up over all of this? There is really no need for repeated posts (I count 4) where you refer to the one post I've made in this thread in an attempt to prove me wrong.

I speak from the experience of numerous girls I've talked to who are too intimadated to go near free weights because they're afraid all the guys will be staring at them. Which I see frequently happen.

No doubt you'll counter with "Oh there's a whole gym that they can use outside of freeweights", but lets face facts here, the primary reason the vast majority of people (yourself not included) go to the gym is to shape up/tone up/burn fat/gain muscle/just look better in general. It's been shown time and time again that free weights and a good diet are the most effective avenue towards gaining a "desirable" body.

And if women are missing out on that because they feel they're getting unwarranted attention from the male members of a gym, then I'm sorry, but that is unfair. P!ss and moan all you like, get even more defensive, but if the actions of one member towards another makes them feel uncomfortable then it is WRONG.

And just for the record, if you're looking for gyms in the Blanch area then feel free to stop into Total Fitness up there some evening. You'll probably find me there. But they keep all the girls in a special female only room because (and this is coming from several of the gyms trainers) they feel initmadated out on the main floor.
