youtube being throttled on bt?

i'm on the 3mb BT package but youtube has been loading really slowly recently, too slowly even to stream stuff off it to the point where it is buffering every 5 or 10 seconds.

other video sites work fine (metacafe etc), and indeed other sites in general and I'm getting full speed with everything i do online except youtube. i thought maybe they were having bandwidth issues, but its fine at work during the day, but if i do an online ping of youtube from dnsstuff.com then i get a ping of 25-50ms and when i do it from home i get 200-400ms so something is very wrong, even tho i get sub 50ms pings in most other sites and with online games.

    has anyone else experienced this?

on the BT 3MB package also, and only remarked on this to a friend the other day. Assumed it was utube themselves that had throtled the output due to pressure on their servers?

I'm on BT's 2MB package and noticed the same thing for a couple of weeks now. So bad i don't even bother trying to watch anything on YouTube anymore.

same issue here - i've noticed more often than not, some videos just don't load at all. The same videos work fine on my office connection or 3G connection.

I used to have this problem too, then I downloaded Speedbit Video Accelerator...They fly along now...

I've noticed it and I'm on UTV BB. Seems to be getting better recently though

I am on the BT 2mb pack here in Maynooth and I am having the same problem, I have a pc connected to my 32" Samsung, I had mates up the other night and tried to watch videos on YouTube but it would drive you nuts buffering all the time.

I thought it was YouTube’s severs but maybe not?

I have a laptop and that is also on the same home network and that is just as bad, just in case people think it's a virus or something.

Is there any way to prove if BT is throttling back YouTube?

here's the average ping times (directly from my router, not my PC) for a couple of sites.

    boards.ie (89.234.66.107) 23.1ms
    bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.131) 36.2ms
    ie.youtube.com (208.65.153.251) 209ms
    youtube.com (208.65.153.253) 211ms
    microsoft.com (207.46.197.32) 203ms
    microsoft.ie (80.93.17.47) 102ms
    yahoo.com (216.109.112.135) 149ms
    yahoo.ie (217.146.186.221) 45ms
    oracle.com (141.146.8.66) 141ms
    oracle.ie & .uk (208.69.32.139) 107-ms
    google.com (64.233.167.99) 145ms
    google.ie (66.249.93.104) 60ms
    metacafe.com (72.32.103.177) 140ms

i know it's hardly any concrete proof and i would expect longer ping times for more distant servers, but it seems like the ie and com youtube sites are in the same location, wherever that is, but metacafe and others work fine, so I don't see what the problem is unless it's being throttled.

would be interesting to get more feedback from people not using bitstream products.

i'd say that these days youtube is one of the main (legit) reasons for lots of home users using broadband, so it's not really on if someone is doing something like this on purpose.

just out of curiosity, how many people having problems here are using the opendns DNS servers? i changed to them when there were lots of DNS problems in Ireland a while back and it's all been fine till now. maybe that might have something to do with it, I don't know.

P.S> I've tried youtube from a Linux linux desktop with firefox and opera, and xp with IE and opera and it's no different on any platform or browser, so i'm confident it's not that. metacafe loads plenty more quickly than needed to stream almost instantly, along with video's from the apple site etc.

    i'm stumped. anyone?

    my pings :

I'm on BT 3mb and have recently noticed the same problem with youtube. I gave up trying to watch anything from it.

I just did a test with the brother he is on a 2mb package with Eircom in Westmeath I am with BT 2MB package in Maynooth

We first went to www.btyahoo.co.uk/speedtest and downloaded the 15MB file we both had an average transfer speed of 215kbs

We then both went to www.youtube.com and downloaded the Simpsons WOW video, He had no trouble at all and the downloaded and watched the video no problem I on the other hand gave up as it kept stopping and started to buffer the video.

I don’t know if this means to much but it does prove that it’s not the YouTube servers that are the problem.

noticed same problem myself with bt 2mb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

tried it using the BT dns servers (from the support site, the 194 ones) and it was no different. wasn't really expecting it to be, but it was worth a go.

    BT DNS:
    192.111.39.1
    192.111.39.4

    Eircom DNS:
    213.94.190.194
    213.94.190.236

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

yep, that's the ones. straight from the BT support site. i just got my 192's and 194's mixed up. :)

i've mailed youtube about it, but so far i've just got the default copy/paste reply that they give to anyone having connection problems. i've mailed them back again with a link to the thread so they can see it's not just a one off. who knows, maybe it'll get far enough up the food chain to actually get something done about it.

i'm actually at home atm and normally i have no trouble from work (which comes via my company's web proxy in the UK) at this time of day, but I'm still having buffering issues from here now.

Same problem for me, BT 3Mb package in Leixlip. It has been like this for a few weeks also - assumed it was YouTube until I seen this thread!

All other flash based video sharing sites seem fine.

Having the same problem with RTE archive programmes. really annoying as i had become used to watching at my convenience rather than when transmitted. utube became a problem about the same time - 3 or 4 weeks ago.

I'm having the same problem with eircom BB, but it seems that BT, IBB and possbile other service providers customer's are having the same problems. I could be wrong but it seems that the issue is with a server on a network that ISP are connected. I was talking to tech and there is not much they can do?

I wont be going on youtube for while. Anyone else have any other information on what is happening.

nothing more back from youtube support, i think i might have p*ssed them off with my last reply, but it was such a pointless cut/paste bullsh*t email response that showed they hadn't even read past the subject of my email and just sent me back their default response.

there are other sites though. metacafe springs to mind. aspparently if you upload (original) video's and they get a lot of views you can even earn a bit of cash.

i would say that if enough people contact their ISP's to complain, that someone will have to do something about it eventually. anyone know any reporters? :)

I noticed this last night. I assumed that he works for BT, which is why he said engineers would fix the issue within a few days. I can only think that someone had a quiet word in his ear and that he or a moderator removed his post's for legal reasons.

Maybe because he was talking sh1te? the thing about traceroutes that most people don't really get is that even though they can be a good indication of a network problem you have to learn how to read them properly.

In all of the examples given the hop preator asked to highlight showed traffic flowing through it just fine. The fact that the node it's self responded slowly isn't an indicator of a problem as most ISP's configure their devices to give ICMP traffic lower prioraty to internet traffic passing through a device. If there are slow response times from one particular hop on then you're more likely to have located a problem.

Again if you look at the examples given in each case the traceroutes start to get slow from p9-0.core02.jfk02.atlas.cogentco.com on, which indicates the problem is more than likely located on the cogent network.

    That is true

In fact if you tracert ANY target you will get the same result, try it yourself, trace not only youtube but google.com or yahoo.com for example and you will see for yourself.

If BT says the problem is not at their side then it must be true. Tracerts are tricky to interpreter, for us, it is impossible to determine if there is a problem or not, we have trust BT and accept that the problem is outside BT's network, at least BT Ireland, BT UK node is a bit of a joke though.

Could also be a problem with Youtube's lynx system, I have heard they are being overloaded.

Whatever it is BT is aware of it and if they havent done anything is either because the can't (out of their scheme) or they dont know (which I doubt it)

Praetor either misread or rushed when he said it was a routing problem (very unlikely though as packets do reach destination) and PUG has said ICMP is normally consider low priority request, so when the router receives the request from a user it will acknowledge it, finish doing other request and then reply to that ICMP you requested. Doesnt mean there is a problem is just not considered important at that moment, basically let just say that the router has better things to do!

I must say that if a router is too busy to reply it does indicate that, at that moment, is working at high capacity.

At first it did looked like a BT issue but if you look to all those tracerts its clear that the high latency occurs overseas.

Have anyone else using a different ISP had the same problem?

Thanks for the info guys, interesting stuff. As I said earlier in the tread I did a test with my brother who is on Eircom at home and he had no problem but in his job they have Bt and over the last few weeks it’s imposable to use YouTube. I will get him to do a tracert later for me and see what he comes up with.

So from what you are saying you need a string of high hops before you can class it as being a problem area? Here is another tracert to google.com a few high spots but not to bad,

This may be the most confusing thread I have ever read, but I've been having the same problem. I don't know who the provider is, I'm in student accommodation. At first I kind of put it down to the amount of people using at one time (at that stage it was just from around 10.30 pm for a couple of hours) but now it happens all the time. It's really annoying though.

(By the way, if anything above didn't make any sense, don't laugh!! I'm not technically minded.)

this just keeps getting weirder. not seeing any ping or traceroute difference, but streams are starting up right away almost, less than a second after the page is loaded and no buffering at all after that.

    Hello people

Would it be possible for people using an ISPs other than BT to post tracerts to youtube?

Hi that's very interesting, the only difference is that Esat's router connects to the cogent network through london (lon01.atlas.cogentco.com), so the problems could laythere, Eircom on the other hand, connects to cogent from amsterdam (ams03.atlas.cogentco.com).

It will be interesting to see tracerts from more providers...
