eh its a pretty low impact form of cardio that works your leg muscles primarly. personally i prefer cycling outside though.

Really how good a piece of equipment is comes down to how you use it. A high intensity work out on a bike is a good cardio work-out but then it also depends on your goals.

    as opposed to?
It's a difficult question to answer when we don't know what your goals are, or what you're doing at the moment. If your not exercising at all, then it'll increase leg strength, V02 max, general fitness, and promote weight loss. If you're competing in the tour de France next summer, then the results might be somewhat different.

    gym vs road?
If so you can cycle continuously without a break for lights/cars etc in the gym. Low maintenance, no punctures etc, safer.

But boring and gets you nowhere (geographically!).

I prefer exercising for a reason- so cycle to work and shops etc. I see it as a waste driving to & from work for 90min then driving 30mins to the gym, cycling for 1 hour, then driving home 30mins, when I could have cycled to & from work in 60mins while driving takes longer these days.- so I could be saving 150mins in the day for extra free time, and all the huge costs associated with the gym & driving.

By typing the words "benefit of excercise bike" into google it would certainly appear so.
