    Hi all

I have been concentrating on getting aerobically fit for the past while mainly by running on roads and treadmill . At this stage i am running 5-6 miles 4-5 times a week and i am enjoying this style of workout very much because it takes only an hour and is easy to fit into my day and up until now i have been getting results in terms of losing weight which was my original objective . However i feel that at this stage i have reached a plateau and i am not losing weight any longer at the same rate . My question is should i go and increase the duration of my workout to 7-8 miles in an hour and half or should i do something different ie weights , cross trainer etc . I will still probably only have an extra 30 mins to give 4-5 times p week . Any suggestions????

    hi Max,

The answer depends on your goals - if it's general health or you want to be a distance runner.

If you want to build up your aerobic capacity you have to exercise above that. So the choices are to either start running further in your 30 mins, or the same distance in less time.

Just running a distance (any distance), your body will adapt (really quickly as well) and you'll stop making benefits - I believe you're at this point now.

If you're interested in fitness, and want to stick to 20-30 minute slots for exercise, this can definitely be done. I'd advise you to start lifting weights (deadlifts, squats, presses) and mix up the monostructural cardio (if there's a rower in your gym hop on that, or skip, both fantastic exercises imo)

If you want advice on building routines feel free to post, pm or email me and I'll help you. But the take home message is that you need to mix it up to keep improving.

    Best of luck,
    Colm

I love to run. I've been running for fun since I was a kid and I really don't care if I do it fast or slow or anything. BUT!

If you buy a stop watch, you're halfway towards getting much fitter. Get some routes, drive it in your car and get the exact distance and start beating your times. Alternatively, and this would be my best suggestion to you, join a running club. There are lots of people in clubs who aren't serious athletes and a bit of coaching/companionship and encouragment is priceless.

To be honest my general advice to anyone who wants to get fitter is to join a club or activity. We're social animals at the end of the day and I believe most exercise can still be enjoyed AND be done properly with a bit of coaching.
