Don't know if this will work but here goes!

A thread for the other county championships.

Donegal SFC Final this Sunday: 4pm. McCumhaill Park.
    St. Eunans v. Glenswilly

Perennial favourites v. first time finalists and club only formed in 1982.

Losing finalists for last 2 years v. new kids on the block.

I think Glenswilly may surprise everybody and bring this to a replay.

Please post about other county championships. Good to hear opinions coming up to Provincial Club time.

What happened to Crokes and An Ghaeltacht?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭Kingdom

South Kerry took Crokes apart back in the summer, and the GAeltacht were knocked out by a good north kerry divisional side called feale rangers.

    In Cavan:

SFC: Cavan Gaels vs. Gowna - Most likely to be Cavan Gaels' trophy this year after losing to Mullahoran last year. Gowna have good players like McCabe, Pearson, McKeever and Paddy Brady but not enough strength in depth like the Gaels.

IFC: Ballinagh vs. Lavey - Ballinagh should have enough to beat Lavey, but they are serious chokers come final day (they've failed on numerous occasions in the last few years). They have some great players in their ranks and strength on the bench too so I really can't see them losing this one again against Lemlins Lavey side.

JFC: Shannon Gaels vs. Killeshandra - I can't even speak about this one, if either side wins I'll be sick. Should have been our trophy this year but we self destructed yet again against a very poor Arva side... Blah...

St. Eunans (Letterkenny) won here in Donegal by six points.

    MAYO SFC Final

    Ballina 3-6 0-13 Charlestown

Ballina were always favourites for this once they beat a very good Ballaghdereen team in the semis. Most people had assumed it would be Ballagh's year but there was obviously some life in the auld stagers yet.

We're at the semi-final stage in the Galway SHC. The 2 semi's are being played this weekend.

    Portumna vs Athenry
    Castlegar vs Kinvara.

The Senior football semi-finals were played last weekend. Milltown beat Caltra by 2 points, while NUIG and Killererin drew.

Donegal final was disappointing. St Eunans won 0-12 to win 1-3. Half time was 0-4 to 0-1 which says a lot. Should have been 7/8 points up. They meet the Cavan champions on Oct 21st.Standard seems poor in Donegal compared to rest of Ulster. Devenney is taking a break due to injury till next year.

In Derry Glenullin beat Ballinderry (major shock) 1-13 to 0-8. Well, Paddy Bradley beat them with 10 points. Seems to be answering his critics this year who said he couldn't do it when it mattered.

They'll meet Bellaghy who beat Dungiven 0-9 to 0-8. Tough game by the sounds of it, well it is the Derry club championship!

Cross won quite impressively. Ronan Clarke was doing serious damage till he went off!

SHC final in Wicklow this weekend. Glenealy vs. Kiltegan. Both teams have met at this stage previously, but Glenealy are still favourites to win this.

Getting close to the finish of the SFC here too. The aforementioned Pats Shillelagh saga finished, and Pats won through. Think the next round was last weekend, so they either finishing the QF's this weekend, or playing the SF's

Just back from Parnell Park where the IFC Final and the first of the SFC Quarter Finals were played.

IFC Final: Erins Isle 2-8 Whitehall Colmcilles 0-11

Got to this game at half time and it was a very tough, close match. Was 2-5 to 0-11 until the last five minutes and then Erins Isle pulled away with three unanswered points.

SFC Quarter Final: St Vincents 4-15 Whitehall Colmcilles 0-12

Not a good day to be from Whitehall but it was going so well for them in the first 8-10 minutes when they went three points up to no score.Diarmuid Connolly and Ger Brennan set up two points to put Vinnies back into it to leave the score 04-03 to Whitehall.
Mossy Quinn was a bit slow to settle but quickly found his form by converting a free kick,a 45,a nicely taken point and then a goal to dismiss any hope of an upset for Whitehall.Mossys goal was the first in a two goal spree St Vincents had.Mossy 1-3 spell was to signal his man of the match performance which was also contested by Vincents goal keeper and Diarmuid Connolly.

The score at half time was 2-9 to 0-4.

Whitehall came out again after the break with all guns blazing and scored two points in quick succession to further indicate that they had not given up yet. However,a point by Diarmuid Connolly put the exclaimation point that this was Vinnies day and an easy tap in minutes later made the score 3-13 to 0-10.Whitehall dominated brief spells of the game but Vinnies defense was too solid with multiple block downs.

Another goal by St Vincents and another point from Mossy Quinn further stuck the knife in and Whitehall had a very late rally towards the dying minutes of the match by scoring 2 points to try and put some respectability on the scoreboard. However,St Vincents were too strong and may now be favourites to lift the cup, however harder challenges ly ahead.

Mid Kerry and South Kerry draw again AET.
SSouth kerry were 3 pts down and they put D.O'Sullivan in Full Forward and he got 3 unanswered points to take the game to ET.
Feale Rangers will have to wait a while longer to know who they meet in the final.

Attention turn to the hurling tomorrow in kerry
    Ballyheigue v Kilmoyley 1.30 MHF
    Lixnaw v Kilmoyle 3.30 SHF
Both games in Austin Stacks Park

Big day in Galway hurling tomorrow with both county championship semi-finals up for decision in Kenny Park, Athenry. The glamour tie is between Portumna and Athenry with Castlegar and Kinvara contesting the other semi. The first match will be very tight but (hopefully ;) ) Portumna will prevail with Kinvara my fancy to upset the odds in the other semi. Should be a great days hurling.

Portumna beat Athenry by 2-16 to 0-14 though it was close enough for most of the game. Kinvara won the other semi so it's a Portumna v Kinvara final. Portumna will be red hot favourites for the final and it will be a major shock if they don't win it.

Glenealy won the Wicklow SHC today, 4-16 to 3-14.

In Tipp, Drom-Inch won their semi-final against Killenaule, 1-19 to 1-09. That sets up a local clash in the final with Loughmore-Castleiney.

MMMM,could possibly be the DCB proposal to make hurling more competitive in the hurling club championship which would make scouting for talent easier for the intercounty setup?

Such an awful match for Athenry this was. I broke my bloody neck to get back from Dublin for this after being at the Police concert the night before. They were just terrible, it didnt help that Cloonan was hobbling around the pitch injured for about 25 minutes. Portumna rang rings around them :(

It was done to make the championship more competitive and give lads at the weaker hurling clubs a chance to play in the championship. The north Dublin team is made up mainly of players from clubs like Na Fianna, Erins Isle, Finbarrs etc. Not sure about south Dublin but I know Judes and Olafs are 2 of the clubs represented.

Not long back from Parnell Park.Crokes v Vincents served up a treat with a nail biting end.Tonights performance was eerily remindful of past Dublin performances.Vinnies went up 8 points at one stage only to collapse at the end and nearly throw it away in a 3 min period.

Crokes got two goals, one a penalty (last kick of the game) to put some fans on the edge of their seat but it was too late and there was no way back for Crokes.Vinnies won the midfield battle and in particular the breaking balls.Vaughan was not at the races for Crokes and Paul Griffin was bested on a number of occasions to say the least.

The game started off as one would expect, trading points.Vinnies were playing catchup for a few minutes after Crokes impressive spell to leave the score 0-5 to 0-2.However,Mossy Quinn slotted home a penalty (after a clash of players, decision deemed to be a studded tackle) and point to leave Crokes realing at 1-3 to 0-5.Vinnies were on the attack and some good saves from Kilmacud Crokes goalkeeper kept them in it.3 good saves from Crokes was a signalling intent for him to possibly get the man of the match.

Half time score was 1-5 to 0-7 to Vinnies.

Crokes came out after the break and scored 2 points. This was to be Crokes last score for 15mins approx. and coincidently this is where Vinnies dominance in mid-field really showed. However some poor shooting from Vinnies kept Crokes in the game when there really should have been daylight between the teams.

A well worked goal from the end line after the attacker skiined his man left the score at 2-7 to 9 points at one stage and then Vinnies controlled the game by winning kickouts in midfield with breaking balls and splendid defending.Vinnies put over 3 more points and it seemed that the game was copper-fastened at 2-11 to 0-9.A big margin of 8 points. The crowd was stunned and Crokes fans began to leave. However, some lacklustre passing in midfield and in the half back line led to Crokes working the ball deep into Vinnies territory for a close range shot into the net to bring a sense of hope back into the Crokes support.

The general consensus was that the game was still well over but with the question mark over how much time was left,it made for an interesting finish.Crokes seemed to get a second wind v late into the match and some over ambitious defending and some questionable refereeing decisions,Crokes got a penalty which they then converted. This was to be the last kick of the game and a giant roar and round of applause was given by the crowd (5,000 - 6,000) for both teams who gave us a great match.

    Portumna 6-12 Kinvara 0-11

Portumna emphatically claimed back the Tom Callanan cup in Pearse Stadium at the weekend. Joe Canning, despite having a poor day from the placed ball, notched up 3-4 with the buzzing Niall Hayes declared man of the match which was fully deserved. Portumna should make a decent fist of the All-Ireland based on this performance, they hurled like an inter county team at times and memories of last years bitter defeat are surely gone now.

It goes without saying Kinvara were extremely disappointing but the most telling stat is that in defence Kinvara contained Galway Seniors Ger Mahon and Shane Kavanagh and Galway U-21 player Alan Leech. Portumna didn't have any current county players in their defence at all.

Would like to listen in to it if so.

Not too sure about the radio Nalced but I am sure it will be on Setanta during the week...actually thats a guarantee it will be on tv.Maybe Anna Livia FM

As for the game,I'll be going to see a good game of football.I hear Kevin Bonner is injured so this might be a bad thing for Brigids.I'm expecting Vinnies to win this by 3 points to bring the cup home.

Incidentally,if I had my way,we'd rent out an open top bus with the team showcasing the trophy in Blanchardstown then down to Glasnevin to our good mates Na Fianna and then down to Stillorgan.:D

Edit: Just found it there. 0-12 to 1-7 in our favour. A welcome relief after the disappointment in the hurling and it's been 23 years since we last won the SFC. Roll on Leinster!

What a marvellous occasion tonight was.Vinnies did themselves justice by winning the title to end a 23 year wait.

Savage fully stretched out to deny St Brigids stealing it at the death.Solid performances from the usual Mossy and Dermot won the game for Vinnies and Neal Billings was inspirational too.

The game started at quite a pace with Mossy punting a free kick over the bar.St Brigids then rattled the goal to leave the score at 1-00 to 0-01.St Vincents were clearly upset by this and got out of gear to trade points with St Brigids.

The refereeing left a lot to be desired as 50-50 scenarios all went to Brigids unless it was thrown in.Dermot Connolly was also robbed of a goal opportunity when the referee blew the whistle to bring it back for a free in after Dermot got through a challenge to be one on one with the Brigids goalkeeper.

Mossy Quinn and Dermot Connolly pointed minutes before the break to leave the score at 1-03 to 0-07 to Vinnies at the break. The second half did not disappoint and the game ebbed and flowed with Vinnies and Brigids trading point after point.Brigids would equalise and Vinnies would push their noses in front again. There was no pattern of dominance in this game compared to others but Vinnies did have their spell of scoring points to widen the gap to three points.

However,Brigids did not give up and the referee did give some questionable decisions deep into Vinnies territory.Savage had previously heroically jumped to keep a high dropping Brigids free off the line.A tense end ensued as Vinnies got 9 players back into defense where Brigids were fighting for a draw.Vinnies defended well but another daft decision by the ref gave Brigids free after free deep into Vinnies defense resulting in a point.

However,Vinnies were on the ropes defending diligently to hold off the impending threat. Both teams were throwing themselves at each other and Brigids got the upper end for the last gasp kick of the game which was definitely goal bound. However,Savage had other ideas and stretched fully to his left to block down the shot and win the cup for Vinnies.

Cheers for the match report Blackbelt. :) But wtf are you doing at home. You should be up at the club celebrating! :p I'm over the moon but don't have anybody over here to celebrate with! :D Some really good young players on that team aswell. Forgot about Tiernan. He's had some amount of bad luck with injuries over the last few years (a broken leg and torn ACL among others) but he's only 21 aswell and is another one for the future. Add in Willie Lowry aswell and the future bodes well for Vincents. I'm delighted with the win and hopefully the lads can have a good crack at Leinster and beyond. :)

Poor ol Willie was injured unfortunately but was duly recognised and acknowledged by Mossy in his speech. We're on to play the Wicklow champions next on 11th November but the WCB are seeking a change of date to a midweek fixture which will ultimately give Vincents home advantage.Wicklow have not got their final sorted out as they are still at semi-final stages but Baltinglass are in the final.

They will play either Kiltegan or Rathnew.I think we'll bury them.If we do so,a real tough test lies ahead in the form of Senalchstown or Navan O Mahoneys.

Meath teams have a shockingly bad record in Leinster Championship though. Not sure why. The Meath championship has never been the best. Dunboyne were a total disgrace against Kilmacud Crokes a couple of years ago. Vincents will probably have more to fear from the likes of Portlaoise or Eire Og. I know one of the Vincent's players pretty well so happy enough that they won it.

Killererin won the Galway county final on Sunday beating Milltown 1-9 to 0-10 with a P Joyce masterclass. Ran the show. Should be themselves or Ballina in Connaught, Ballina would be a bit stronger overall but with Nicky and Padraig Joyce in the forward line Killererin will always have a chance.
