    Ok folks I was doing my routine last week (6 weeks in now) and I am making some good progress ( still worried about the upper inner chest). I was startin a set of barbell rows and I felt a tweak in my lower back. The last week has been very sore but has eased a bit over the last day or so... so stupidly I decided to go ahead with the deadlifts last night and I am not the best today.

    I am really f**ked off about this now as I will probably miss my legs and abs for the second week running because of this. Can somebody give me some solid advice about how to progress with this??/???

    Get it looked at by a compotent doc with sports knowledge or go straight to a sports physio.

    seconded. The pain you're feeling could be something as simple as normal muscle soreness from lifting, or it could be something more serious. Getting advice from a medical professional is the only way to tell.

    You said you're 6 weeks into a routine - is this 6 weeks of lifting history in total? I've had trouble with lower back pain myself in the past and a good neuro-muscular massage or TENS treatment and accupuncture have done wonders for short term relief (I refuse to take painkillers - what's the good of masking the pain if it makes me push further than I should?) but then I actually started to address the problem properly with mobility work - a sore back is often an overused back and underused hamstrings. Since doing lots of rehab and preventative exercises with my back and hams my back has been completely pain free.

    Mike Robertson and Eric Cressey have written bundle-loads of articles about this kind of thing. Just as an example there's some stuff here,

    yeah its six weeks in total, also im 32 so im not getting any younger, what really kills me is the sitting in the car for an hour in the morning, when I am up and about its not that bad.......

    Look for your own sake please get it checked out.

    There's SO many things it could be. And attempting to diagnose and treat the wrong one yourself would be disasterous (sp).

    Like it could be skeletal. You might have a slipped, bulged or herniated disc.

    Could be something as simple as a sarco-ilica joint issue.

    Possibly muscular. You might have tightness in your hips/glutes/hamstrings.

    Could be any number of other things.

    If I was to guess (just based purely on frequency and my own exp), I'd say it's possibly an SI joint issue caused by bad motor control/muscular tightness. Complete and utter stab in the dark tho.

    what Hanley said. The great thing is, your back is pretty damn resilient, and as soon as you find out what is wrong you can begin to address it. Ignoring it or incorrectly self-diagnosing it will only prolong the pain and possibly cause further damage.

    That sounds like a slipping disk to me mate*, definitely go to a sports physio. I had the very same symptoms myself and that's what it was for me. One physio session, some exercises, one chiropractor session (as recommended by the physio) and a few more exercises and I was right as rain. Only missed 10 days of training in total.

    *Not medical advise by the way. My medical advise would be to get a giant pair of silicon breasts and sit indoors all day texting me pictures of them.

    I would agree with everything. Get to a good physio, get it sorted and more importantly address any imbalances or issues that could cause the same thing to happen again.
