Fat and flexible

There is a guy in my gym(Total Fitness) who seems to be carrying a few extra pounds, but the thing is I have seen him stretch and he seems to have very good range with his flexibility. Now, perhaps fat is an exaggeration, but he does not on the outset seem to have a flexible physique.

So my question is, does weight have any bearing on how flexible you are?

    None what so ever.

    If anything, it helps flexibility.

In puberty, females gain fat on their hips to naturally prepare their bodies for pregnancy. The fat lubricates their joints, making the hips more flexible for giving birth.

Yeah but in fairness, I can see where the OP is coming from. Generally if a person is fat, you're not talking about someone who exercises a lot, and so wouldn't typically be very supple.

It may be true in general, but there are a lot of exceptions, people who are fit and strong and supple, but carrying a lot of extra bodyfat. And there are people with ideal bodyfat percentages, who are in crap condition.

Where on earth did you get that 'quote'?

I think I get it.... it is like the way your hamstrings get a decent stretch when you are leaning over doing a straight leg deadlift.

The same logic applies to fat people. The excess weight helps to bend them over more, thus making them a bit more flexible in the long run.

    (I'll get my coat).
