I tore my hamstring last night, where should i go? In the past i have used a physical therapist but she was rubbish. I am told Physiotherapists are the best but does anyone know one that i could use? There seems to be a new one in Temple Bar, www.thephysiocompany.com but do not know of them even though their site looks great. in pain and want to get it sorted - any ideas?

I had a big knot in the tendon going down the side of my thigh that was causing a lot of pain in my knee. At the time I didn't know it was a tendon problem and had my knee x-rayed, took anti-inflamatries, everything that the doctor recommended. I even rested for 3 months, doing no exercies at all, but nothing worked.

A friend in work recommeded her boyfriend, who is a qualified Neuromuscular, Physical and Orthopaedic Sports Massage Therapist. He got me sorted in 3 sessions!! I had a reoccurance of the injury about 3 months later due to astro-turf soccer, but he got rid of it in 2 more sessions and I haven't seen it since. That's nearly a year ago now.

His name is Thomas Manton and he works out of Irishtown. <mod Snip> Removed Contact Number. Please PM SuprSi for contact number </Mod Snip> and I'd definitely recommend him.

If you've actually torn your hamstrin and your whole legs turned black and blue, get your ass to a surgeon asap.

If you've torn it, you wouldn't be typing this you'd be writhing around in pain! If, as Hanley said, it's not bruising up badly you may have just pulled it. My only recommendation if you're a sportsperson is to try to go to a proper sports physio as opposed to a physio. There's a clinic in Drumcondra that deals with a lot or runners so they'd be familiar with that sort of injury. Don't have the number but they're in the golden pages and they're called the Sports Injury Clinic I think.

If you injured it during training, one of the most relevant questions would be why would you tear/pull one side and not the other?

Either your training is off, you have an old injury that requires attention or there is a difference in the tone of the hamstring which could relate to an asymptomatic low back injury or general spinal dysfunction.

Perhaps you should have someone evaluate your training and techniques after looking after the injury you now have.

Eroo: This is a fair point, but it doesn't help that you quoted the users post. Even if the OP had removed the contact number, you still had it quoted.

If you're thinking of Mark McCabe who used to be out in La Mancha, he's in Schoolhouse Lane off Kildare street now...

Find a specialist in sport medicine. Your ordinary GP or physio will tend to say "Wait and let it heal itself," which is fine unless it heals badly, when you are screwed. There are specialists out there (try the phone book) who can get you back in action quickly and safely.

I was interested to note how someone was injured during astro turf, I tore my groin last week, did my warm up, have been training/playing all year so found it odd I did in my groin, but went to the muscle clinic and he said that he is getting a lot of injuries from guys playing Astro turf.
I wonder is there higher risk playing Astro or something ?

I'd say it's because it's becoming much more popular and since the people who are startin to play it now probably haven't played seriously in several years, it leaves them more susceptible to injuries.

I agree about that it a "well its better than nothing" and good exercise if u are doing nothing.
I think though that also in my case it was the wet smooth surface which aided to my injury which too is not helpin.

I highly recommend Dublin Spine & Sports Physiotherapy. www.physiotherapyclinic.ie

They have a gym on their premises, which is full of specialist rehab equipment designed to rehabilitate specific injuries.
