So who do the knowledgeable boardsies rate as the best live poker player from this little island of ours. Again there are rankings available but they don't tell the whole story.

One player who i think has come on a lot this year is Peter Maughan. His excellent showing in the Irish Open was followed by becoming the most consistent cash game player in Dublin. I think it is very hard to mention just one, but Peter would get my vote. Honourable mentions would go to Conor Doyle, Jay o'toole, Michael Mulddon and BCB for most improved.Darragh Thomas too for when he does bother to play live!

Two to watch out for the future would be Mark mcDonnell and Ross Johnson

    Eddie the Eagle?

Michael Muldoon probably the player that's impresed me most all year but I haven't played much live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

michael muldoon on form is leaps and bounds ahead, obv the likes of Andy and Padraig Donnacha etc will always impress. Will never forget padriags bluff v german in citywest when your mans camera man stopped filming the hand!

Well Sylvester G was the best Irish finisher in the Main Event, had a big result in the WSOP 10,000 Omaha againt a very tough field, and just cashed in EPT Barcelona, so I think he has made the step up, and doesn't get enough credit.

Seriously when it comes to cash games then Peter Roche, Alan Betsen, Padraic Parkinson, Dave Callaghan and Peter Maughan. Tournaments Id go for Michael Muldoon, Andy Black and Joe O Neill

The best online player is also the best live player.

18 posts so far and no mention of Don O'Dea ? Don't think there much between him, Andy and Padraig.

Edit: Oops just saw Goodluck2me mentioned him.

    Trap 7.

    Don O'Dea ?

In fairness you very rarely see Donnacha play live these days so most players who have only been on the scene a few years or less wouldnt be so farmiliar with him. I guess you could say the same about Padraic he just has a higher profile

OP Question: "Who is Irelands best live poker player?"

"Irelands best" - you know this grammar makes the baby Jesus weep, don't you? Why ignore the humble apostrophe?

    FYP

I was never aware that people were so strict on grammar on online forums. But if that's the standard you expect, then I feel I should inform you that you forgot to stick in the word "that". It's a common grammar problem, especially amoung our nation.

How come its always the people with absolutely nothing to contribute to a discussion that get pedantic about grammer?

Where did you get your English degree ? Did you learn that 'separation' is the most commonly misspelled word in the English language ?

Back on topic all, take it to spell czechs if you want to discuss the finer points (but I have no access to that either, so I am just guessing as to what they may discuss in there).

Also, please no text speak, or my shotgun will be loaded, especially if it is deliberate to annoy me.

u have to name a few players that fit that bill .

1 .slyvester geoghegan wsop 2 cashes ept cash final tables in ireland all year

    2. marty smith irish open winner as well as final table ladbrokes final table

3 alan kelleher 4 cashs wsop this year

4 bob willis cashed wsope as well as a few other touries
    5 pat scallon cashed wsope
6 d o dea cashed wsop again this year
7 cieran from carragline winner in wsop nl holdem
8 andy black cashed loads of major touries this year world wide
9 dave callaghan cashed wsope and very live cash player as well

to name just a few in saying who is the best live player in ireland do we just say touries in ireland only or world wide as well because a lot of the players who cash here do not get to far abroad a lot of the time . but a few stand out . at the present moment SLYVESTER GEOGHEGAN FITS BOTH .

I would of thought that spelling is hardly an important aspect of an english degree. And I believe you'll find that around these parts Lloyd is the most commonly mispelled word, :D

As for the topic of the thread, I suppose it doesn't matter where the tourneys were played. And I don't think this should be judge from the point of view that the best player is the one that won the most money. Not in a tourney. I'd rate consistant wins at lower levels above a single win in a mojor event like the WSOP. I'm not aiming this at any player mentioned but one big win does not an expert make.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 388 ✭✭mrflash

maybe i should add this to the original post, but these rankings which are done by the likes of bluff, pokerplayer and such, they are all tourney related.
For example Scott Fischman and John Gale are ranked in the top 50 on bluff, but the likes of Todd Brunson and Chip Reese are not. And all the pros will tell you that these are two of the very best players on earth.
But what i am asking you guys is who do you think is the best live player from ireland, i dont care if he only plays cash, or if he only plays tournaments or if he plays both.
And the reason for the question is due to the boom in poker over the last few years. Four years ago it would have been easy enough to narrow it down, but things have changed a great deal since then.

If I had 8k to invest in an EPT/serious cash game event and I had a choice of me playing it or letting somebody else play it on my behalf - well then id let Halfbaked play it for me. Singularly the best holdem cash game player on the Dublin scene.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,754 ✭✭✭ianmc38

I'd have to go for Mick the Lip. You can never put him on a hand and no matter what you do he'll always have two live cards. As well as that his hand reading skills are second to none. The number of times I've gotten it AIPF against him and he looks at me and says "I know you have aces". Really supernatural hand reading ability.

Or maybe Albanian Hector. The man is a genius.

One cash doesnt make a good player, a lot of luckbox results this year imo.

Marty Smyth seems to be a good cash and tournament player and has impressed me in both this year.

I havent really played with anyone who impressed me this year but i havent played much live. AKQJ10 was fairly running our table in the Waterford main event in May, a table which included halibut2 may i add......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,724 ✭✭✭nicnicnic

i find peoples answers here funny, so recent result based. a year ago Dave O C, Rob, Dave Murry, Pillow, would of had many references in a tread like this. Six months ago sylvester was generally referred to as a bit of a muppet after a few first hand exists.

Andy and Padraig are well clear in my mind and then a bunch of about 30 players take your choice.

Oh hang on Pat Scanlon must be the best wasn't he the highest Irish finisher in the recent WSOPE

lol at any tournament players being the best at poker

I didnt know who he was which made it easier for the first few levels, by the time i found out who he was he didnt have much chips.

peter(halfbaked) is without doubt the best dublin regular around, not even close. consistent results and its certainly not from getting hit with the deck.

ross j is one of the best tourney players around. impressive record with ept result, waterford(sick beat) and a lot of jackpot results. pity he's not a degenerate and is going to give up for college. due a big result.

Sums it up really. That's part of the point I was trying to make in the other thread (and in my reply to RT in this thread).

I think these threads are great for a bit of banter.

Halfbaked is by far and away the best player I have played with.
    Mickste and Pillowtalk also.

surely its whoever is the most consistent winner in the last five or ten years in the big fitz omaha game?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,394 ✭✭✭robinlacey

(i don't know anything about omaha or that game, but i get the impression that its the toughest regular game in the country, unless i'm mistaken?)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭Conspicuous

I agree Robin to a point thats what makes this topic tricky. Its hard to say who is the best out and out live player in Ireland. Perhaps it should go into three categories
    1.PLO Cash
    2.THE Cash
    3.Tournaments

Its impossible to say whether for example Peter Maughan or Rochey is a better player as they play different games. However Rochey has been destroying Dublin cash games for years while Maughan has only been doing it for a year or two. Not saying that PM wont continue to dominate its just he has yet to prove his ability over time.

The best should be eh maybe the pro's.. Andy Black serious tourny results this year and top of Irish money list etc etc. However I ve only ever actually played once at Andy's table so have no real comments on his game.

I believe a high percentage of regular players around the country are actually part time hobby players (like me) who also happen to be very very good (eh maybe like me). I think consistency is key for tourny results hence the Irish ranking events of which we now have 1 or more every week splattered around the country.

Sylvestor Geogehan has been mentioned a few times in this thread so obviously his game has hugely improved since i reckon around May of this year..But not up there in my opinion. Quite reckless and table time finds that out..

I could name 10-15 players who are seriously top notch and who I have learned a lot from in playing against in the last 2 years but these guys also get up and go to work the next day. (i.e Amatuers)

Michael Muldoon for me im afraid is way ahead at the moment. He has cashed at 3 Irish ranking events in September alone never finishing lower than 2nd not to mention his 4th place finish in last years London EPT. He is a class act but yet I have no fear of him at my table. It actually makes ya play better against him.... I ve been at his table about 6/7 times so far this year and a nice guy to boot.

    Jay
