Has CD'Wows service improved of late ?

Bit wary of ordering from them, was tormented in the past few months chasing orders from them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Rozbeef

yep they've got their act together. ordered a couple of things last week and they arrived quickly. still have to sort out their e-mail dispatch system though. got the e-mail saying the dvd's had been dispatched after i'd received them..

but they've changed owners apparently and seem much better.

  • Thanks OP, just ordered Untouchables Special Edition with the Sony Style voucher for a grand total of £1.99.
try using the link through dvd times for cd wow it gives an extra £1 OFF PLUS A VOUCHER = 99P DVD'S (sorry bout caps lock)

Is there a £2 dvdtimes voucher?

I just tried to buy something from the £2.99 list but when I went to the checkout none of the usual security indicators were present i.e. https or the lock symbol.

    Did anyone else notice this?

Yep.. what are CDWOW at?!

don't like the way they are heading.......first they went to crap, orders all over the place - and no they haven't sorted it out, I'm still waiting on something for over 2 months, people in work been trying to cancel stuff and having trouble.....

was disgusted to get a mail from them yesterday advertising Derivatives companies, what the hell has that to do with a CD/DVD retailer, I get more third party mails from them these days than admails about their products.

unsecure servers would be a nail in the coffin I think.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

It's not an unsecure server, it's hosted on Paynova which is a Verisign secured company!

As bad as CDWOW are, do you honestly think they would let their customers order on an unsecured server?

    C'mon people.... "learn things!"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

    theyre all £4.99

  • I don't see any for £4.99...the dearest is £3.99 which can be reduced to £2.99 with a voucher so its still a worthy bargain alert thread.;)

American Beauty was 2.99 two hours ago, now it's 4.99

  • wtf? It's still showing up as £3.99 for me.

Apocalypse Now was 2.99 a few hours ago, picked it up for 1.99 with voucher... now its 4.99!!

    Completely disagree, Basquille.

The s in https indicates that there is an encrypted connection to the server and protects the credit card number in transit between the user's computer and the server. The server itself may be secure but without the s the information sent over a normal http link is completely open to eavesdropping.

Call me old fashioned, stupid or plain wrong but I will not send my credit card details over an unsecured link - irrespective of where or what server it is going to :)

  • sh*t now I'm worried. Btw, everything, (including Apocalypse Now Redux) are still showing up as £3.99 and not £4.99 for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

I just looked and they're (mostly) all £4.99 as far as I can see (using the link in the OP). Try clearing out your cache guys.

  • Tried it with IE and yes you're right...they're mostly £4.99 (its still showing up as £3.99 in Firefox no matter how many times I hit reload :(

Me too. I couldn't believe that sh1t. Truly disgusting - I haven't bought anything from them in months, and I'm less likely to now.

    podge..

Take it from me as a full-time programmer who specialises mainly in Java but i know plenty lot about web scripting, SSL etc.

What you are look at on the Payment where Paynova is concerned is an IFrame which links to a secure payment form on their server. How do i know this.. well, i looked at the HTML source (and here's the line which applies here):
    <IFRAME NAME="wallet" width="400" height="400" SRC="https://paygate.paynova.com/paynova3/?sessionkey=2B5A52D3-69EC-4686-BB30-BAD103BF12FE4" scrolling="No" marginwidth="0" frameborder="No"></IFRAME>

Notice the 'https://' in the src for the payment form! ;)

So, i'm calling you out on this one!

The cute whores. You can see now what they've done. Prices all went up and I got an email from them telling me all about their new site and how they have put 3 x £1 vouchers in my voucher bank.

Give a little, take a little

Even if is wasn't secure (which it is) - what's the worst that can happen?

You never get stung for the cash if somebody steals your details to buy something anyway. No point in getting all worried about it or you'd never get the benefits that web-shopping has to offer.

I tis a bit confusing. The Paynova frame bit seems to be secure, but the whole page isn't

So anyone being careful and looking for the lock symbol/https is going to question it.

I was wondering about it myself when I ordered last week (stuff came inside a wekk BTW).

Anything entered in the form is sent via the secure connection. You do not enter any sensitive information outside that form. I don't see the problem!

The reason the whole page isn't secure is because the form bit where you enter payment information is secure.

Just to prove the form is secure, i'm going to do a sample transaction to that payment stage. Details are as below:

If you order something, then log in and carry onto the payment stage (when you reach the questionable page with the Paynova form). View the source of the page and now go to the URL inside the IFrame (where the Paynova form is, as above).

After going to the URL, the payment form will open in a larger window and what do i notice about the page:

    Any more proof needed?

I really don't know how to make it any clearer....!

I believe you but I aborted my last order because I too thought the page was no longer secure.

I contacted the CDWOW customer support but they couldn't explain it to me.

I think a lot of people who know a little about internet security will see the page has no https:// in the URL and no padlock and will back away slowly...

It was there previously, this changed when they changed their CC handler.

Thats a rather cavalier attitude to your credit card details

While it has never happened to me, I would imagine that any unauthorised fund removal would take quite a bit of red tape to get the funds back.

I don't think it would be just a matter of ringing up the Bank and saying "about that €400 transaction that I didn't make...."

I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

I'll have to bow to your superior knowledge on the subject, basquille :)

However I have just looked again at the payment page and there is no obvious indication whatsoever that the payment is being sent over a secure connection.

Having looked at the web page source I do agree with you that the connection is being sent over a secure connection.

For the average Joe, I think that the https and padlock are a good indicator of safety and should be present.
