How many hours of sleep do you need?

So how many hours do you sleep on average?
I’m not talking about falling home from a nightclub at 3am and being in work the next day but if you’re not drinking and there’s nothing special going. Just a general average.

I never have more than 5 hours sleep. Was up reading until 1am last night and then went jogging and watched Sky News for a while at 6am this morning.
Was still late for work at 9am though. :o
Got called weird by one of the someone in work for this but I reckon others are sleeping their lives away.
Normally up at 07:30am at weekends.

So how many hours for you?

i can survive with 6, but i would prefer 8!

I must have 8 hours or I'm like a zombie. However if left to my own devices I could easily sleep 10-12 hours a day. if sleeping was an olympic sport I'd be a multiple gold medalist.

8 and another 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
    Damn medication.

I never quite realised how little sleep I got until I got my new phone - which I use as my alarm. When I set it now the damn thing tells me exactly how long it will be until the alarm goes off - generally in the region of 5 to 5½ hours kip.

    15 hours most days

7 at home and then another eight while i work

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭adam_ccfc

I try to get 8. Anything less than 6 and I'd be pretty tired.
Then, I find if I get 10/11 hours, I'm wrecked as well!

    8 is just right.

I'm with Terry on this. (Not together obviously..)

8 and I could use a couple during the day if I didn't have to work. Medication aswell.

usually the 8 or so hours for old me. My alarm radio blares for at least an hour or so before I actually get up, its nice though because I'm subconsciously listening whilst snoozing and when I wake up I know all the mornings news

I have to have 8 hours or I'm a right bítch. Also, if I'm not at work (weekends, holidays) I need a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. I'm a very sleepy person. I'm not a big fan of staying out late, I tend to fade at about 2am. It always makes me feel like such a party pooper but i just love my bed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I get all my sleeping done while blinking throughout the course of the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

About 7 usually does me, certainly wouldn't go more than 8 I'd only be yawning for the day!

Pretty much the same as this.

I have to get up at 6.30 weekdays, so I usually try to be asleep by about 11.30.

Some week nights I go to the pub, but I gave up the drink six weeks ago for various reasons, saving money being the main one, so if my flatmate is having a few pints we get home at about 12.45, I'd be asleep by 1. I'd be tired, but not unfunctional the next day, but I'd definitely be in bed by eleven that night.

Weekends then I head out to whatever place my mates are in, and get home at about two-ish, if some people come back I'd stay up for a while, then go to bed at about four, and get up the next day by about one.

Some Fridays though, I go to the match, pop into the club bar afterwards for a chat with whoever, and be home in bed by twelve, and sleep til twelve on the Saturday.

I tested this over the last few months and the reults of my unofficial study show that

less than 8 hours = cranky and tired
    8 hours = perfect
more than 8 hours = tired and dazed

Bed, 1 hour to get into a good sleep, 8 hours of solid sleep, 30 mins to come around...perfect....If I climb into bed less than 8.5 hrs before getting up the next day, I'm wrecked.

4-5 hours most nights of the week and probably about 10 on weekends

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I'm learned to make peace with the fact that I love sleeping, but I rarely wake up feeling refreshed.

I try to be in bed by 11.30 on weeknights to be up by 7.30. In reality, I end up in bed at 11.45, asleep at 12.30 and out of bed at 7.50.

On the weekend, I'm cranky if I'm out of bed before 10, but have a headache all day if I get up after 12.

I have found that if I wake up naturally in the morning (even if it's 6am), I feel fresh and awakeish. Then I go back to sleep and feel terrible having been rudely awakened by the alarm clock.
What I really want to try train myself to do is fall asleep immediately when I go to bed and allow the natural light (curtains open) to wake me up naturally. Theoretically this should allow me to sleep for about 5-6 hours in the summer and 7 or 8 in the winter.

Recent research shows that those who sleep 8 hours or more, die earlier than those who sleep 6 or 7 hours. Sleeping only four or five hours though is worse for your lifespan.

man i couldent imagine sleaping as much as some of you do, please do not take this in a bad way but
    do you not enjoy life?
do you not find that sleaping is a weekness i mean getting that much every nite , wow so someone who gets 6 or maybbe 7 a night would have so much more free time than you.

I dont get it i mean even if im tired if feel weird going to sleap unless i have got everything i wanted to get done/watched done.

I would hate to sleap that much so much wasted time, so like man if i got 8 or 9 hours sleap a day i would bearly have <4 hours a day when i am not sleaping/working/travleing and then that would not be enough time to eat and watch all my stores and do the other things that ya do.

Would the world not be better if we altered to a 32 hour day?
if im right when you deprive the human of sunlight it will revert to a 32 hour day i belive

To be honest, I'd rather be awake and feel on the top of my game 15 hours a day than be a zombie and feel like sh1t for 17. I go to bed at around 11:30, up at 9 and home at 5:30 every day and it suits me grand!

I clicked 5-7 because that's what I usually get (about 6 1/2 or 7) but I'd prefer 8-9 every night in an ideal world.

Yeah but I'd rather less years where I feel good instead of two or three more years where I feel like crap.

I get 6 to 7 during the week and 10 to 12 on the weekends.

I am fond of my sleep, and will sleep for 12 hours easily when life allows. I have slept for 30 hours once after a hard weekend..

Always plan to get around 7 or 8, but never really happens.
Have to be up at 7 so aim for around 12, usually 2 or 3 though.

Oh World of Warcraft, you are a harsh mistress.

To function properly I need 8-10 hours. Could easily sleep for 12 if given the chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Schism

I usually sleep about 5-6 during the week, provided I get up and go to class. Make up for it at the weekend and might get 9-10 hours, but always feel really tired still.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,594 ✭✭✭Fozzy

I'd usually get 6 hours, although earlier in the year I was getting by fine on 3 hours sleep during weekdays. Slept for about 10 hours straight once the weekend came round though. I always feel like I'm missing something when I have to sleep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Schism

Apparently if you don't sleep your regular amount your body doesn't just forget about it and sooner or later you have to catch up on it*

*Don't quote me on that as I have absolutely no way to prove it.

people have yold me that for years...they're wrong! I worked a job where I had to be up at 7:30 for 10 months and I was wrecked the whole time! I operate at such a high mentle capacity, I need lots of rest :p

I'm an 8 hours man. 11 till 7 pretty much during the week. Weekends depends on alcohol consumption

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,645 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

How many do I need vs how many do I want?

I've proven quite coherent running ops on four hours sleep a night for weeks at a time, but on a weekend it's not that unusual for me to stay in bed for ten or even more hours.

    NTM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

4-5 hours a night during the week (bed somewhere between 1 and 2, up at 6.15) and usually 1 12 hour stretch and 1 9 hour at the weekend.
