Sports Injuries - Physio necessary?

I know this is not a medical forum etc etc...

Just wanted to get some advise about how other people have gone about treating sports injuries.

A couple of months ago when I was playing soccer I over-stretched for a ball and I did some sort of damage (to groin i think).. basically where the leg joins the 'under-carraige'. From some net research it seems like some sort of groin strain: http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/frontthigh/adductrupture.htm

I rested for about 2 months (i.e. not playing football). It doesn't hurt while walking normally etc. I had done some cycling, light jogging in that 2 month period and it seemed fine.

Anyway this week, I started to play again. I stretched and warmed up before the game, but about 40 minutes in, i felt the strain again.

I think I'll have to get it checked out, but just wondering what my options are. Who do I see about it? Regular doctor first off?

    Any advise would be appreciated.

Great place to go for all sport injuries. Myself, Hanley, Colmconn and maybe a few others have been there.

Do some research on mobility drills for warming up and make sure you do it properly, it'll help avoid injuries like yours in the long run. I'd avoid most static stretching before a match or training.

My bro is a physio and I've been treated by him and his partner for a range of injuries (bike crashes, mma injuries, running injuries). They know their stuff.

I recommend my athletes to them if they pick up an injury. They're Advanced Physio, based next to the Ashleaf Shopping Centre. 01-4554444

I've also been treated by the good people out in UCD's Sports Injuries clinic - and been happy with the service.

If you're going to a physio, make sure it's a sports physio, as they'll understand the stress of sport and the need/desire to get back playing.

    Hey,

I'm a qualified massage therapist (the basics and Sports Massage Therapy), definitely get it seen to!! It's only going to keep bugging you!

If you must continue to play sport, make sure to put ice on the injured part straight away after training/playing... ice is a key factor in rehab of sports injuries

Groin strains are a complete and utter b!tch. They'll jsut keep coming back at you if you don't get them sorted properly.

By and large most muscular injuries are caused by some imbalance/dormant or tight muscle. You can sit at home resting it all you want but unless you try to correct the imbalance it's going to re-occur. Treating the symptom and not the cause like...

Best thing to do is go to a sports physio and they'll probably do a full eval. on you and give you a better idea of what's going on.
