Protein bars

What do ye think of these? I sometimes have one between lunch and dinner; they're about 200cals and have about 15 - 20g of protein in them and they really fill the 5-6 hour gap between these meals, without having to prepare an extra meal when I'm usually on the move. The only real drawback is the price and the fact that they've got a fair bit of sugar in them. But it's better than reaching for a 'treat' to fill my sweet tooth.

Yeah they're okay imo. Again a whole food option would be better but as you said it's better than just buying a bag of crisps. I do it myself sometimes when I'm in town and don't have any food with me.

The best thing is that in my opinion, they taste better then a regular Mars/Snickers/what have you...

I read somewhere that Ryan Reynolds ate them when he was getting in shape for Blade Trinity. I myself have a tendency to somewhat over-eat at mealtimes, which sometimes puts to bed the idea behind having multiple meals a day, so I find ther're perfect for that too.

They the ones in holland and Barret?

I sometimes eat the USN ones. But to be honest, it's just the lesser of two evils when you want some junk as at least you're getting something out of it. The Vanilla Caramel one...

I got Biotest Metabolic Drive, found them good, and tasty. Cheap too.

Yeah a purple and red wrapper I think. 3.50 a goes where I get them but they've 30g of protein, 30 of carbs and about 8g of fat I think so you're looking at 300+cals.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,287 ✭✭✭davyjose

I have a 'Powerbar Protein plus' one here - protein 16.6g; carbs 24.4g and fat 4.5g all in a 55g bar - quite a lot of sugar but its only 204kcals and its surprisingly filling ;)
The maximuscle ones are the same cals, but 21 or 22g of protein and 17g of carbs and its 60g (I dont have the exact numbers here, but i read the back of one earlier) :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 399 ✭✭estariol

....would they really just be the lesser of two evils? reading the back of the maximuscle they seem fairly well balanced. Personally I eat at least 2 a day usually an hour or two either side of training, find I can palate them better than protein shakes, again my vote is Animal Snax.

Are any of these reasonably cheap? Where can you buy single bars without having to buy a whole box of them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

I've made my own, with Oats, Whey Powder, Honey and Peanut/Almond/Nut butter.

At least I knows what's going into them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭EdgarAllenPoo

That's not a bad idea I have those ingredients and I might give it a try.

Sounds like a bit of effort.

Just made a batch of my own bars there, they're yummy.

6 scoops of chocolate protein powder, two beaten eggs, flax meal, almond meal, pecan meal, pinch salt, cocoa powder, natural peanut butter, splenda, add some water to mix the lot, bung in a baking dish and into the oven for about 13 mins and bob's your uncle.

Go to tesco's and buy yourself a trolley load of 200g packets of peanuts. 49cent a packet and there's 50.4g of protein in each packet of 200g.

Why add the sugar and salt? I wouldn't imagine you'd need them.

It's a recpie I got from muscletalk, heat up honey + peanut butter, and add to the dry mix, roll onto a tray and leave to set. You don't have to cook em, and can usually make some version of them using ingredients lying around.

I find 90 seconds on full in the microwave does it , then have all the other stuff ready and dump it in mix and put it on the try as quickly as you can it gets hard to work with quickly , it helps if you have a big flat metal spoon like the one they gave away with the uncle bens rice a few years back , leave the spoon in boiling water then once you have the stuff on the try (line the try with grease proof paper) use the hot spoon to spread it out and leave in the fridge over night once set cut them up and wrap in Clingfilm and presto a protein bar :D

A lot of health food shops carry them. That's where I get them. They are quite expensive, but might be cheaper if you buy in bulk.

Depends on your goals, and many other factors, your age, weight etc.

If you are a short female and trying to lose weight you might be on 1200kcal a day to lose fat. If you are a 7ft giant bodybuilder you might be wanting 6000kcal per day with the aim to put on muscle mass.

Either way most recommend 6 meals a day, evenly sized (breakfast can be bigger), and evenly spaced.

For a while I was aiming for 1900kcal per day, so had a 400kcal breakfast and 5x300kcal meals. All evenly spaced, last meal around 8pm

You have to figure out what your calorific requirments are, but you posted at 17.17 so if you have only had 500kcal up till then it is very little (unless you are a small person). Was that a single meal?

Well 2 meals in around 9 hours will only serve to slow it more. Check out this to workout what your daily needs should be.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=50956807&postcount=4

Eating 6 evenly spaced meals boosts your metabolism. Lifting weights will also boost it, building the new muscle burns calories, and the new muscle uses more calories on a daily basis. Excess dieting without adequate training will lead to muscle loss, so you might already be lacking "normal" muscle for a person your age/sex/height. And do not worry about getting too muscular- you won't.

I made my own protein bars/cakes yesterday.
200g roasted peanuts crushed with a rolling pin
    200g rolled porridge oats
    75g honey
    75g maple syrup
100g 80% unflavoured whey protein powder
    60ml skimmed milk
    3 medium eggs

Baked for around 20-25mins at about 170C. Came out pretty good, not too sweet- some might like it sweeter, you can taste the batter which was actually pretty good raw, they are nice and dense like rich cakes. I was in 2 minds about making it non-cook, in the end it was really dry (before the eggs + milk) and I didnt want to add more sugars to make it sticky, the crushed nuts are not as sticky as peanut butter either. I poured half a pack out and crushed the rest inside the pack, put in a bowl, then did the other half.

All came out weighing something like 850g, fraction of the cost of bars. I also calculated the nutritional values of them, I dont have it at hand if anybody is interested I will post them, I do know protein was about 22g per 100g, and about 360kcal per 100g

nut protein is not very high quality protein unless it is combined with other types

Yeah, I put the nuts & honey in first, microwaved until it was warm & runny, added oats & mixed well, the the protein powder was sprinkled a little at a time, I didnt want clumps of protein in it, then milk, then the eggs. I suppose you could bung it all in a processor, but I like the texture of the whole oats and there were a lot of half crushed nuts too.

I probably could have added a little more protein powder, and maybe some cocoa or chocolate chips.

All went in a baking tray with greaseproof paper, mixture was about 1" deep and rose a little. It did stick to the paper a bit, if doing again I would grease it up.

I literally just made it up as I went along, people might prefer different proportions. If somebody wanted a PWO bar they might want more sugars in it. Honey is sweeter than sugar per gram. Glucose is less sweet so it could be added without it getting sickly sweet. Also you can get brown rice syrup, and barley malt in health shops which is also high in sugar, not too sweet, and is very sticky.

My goal is lose weigh get reasonably fit. If going away for a day how do you manage the tuna.

Buy a plastic lunch box. The evening before, or morning of your trip, do the following:
    • Put one tin of tuna (the small 135g drained weight cans) into a big mixing bowl.
    • Cut up 2 carrots into small pieces
    • Cut up an onion
    • Cut up a green/yellow or red pepper
    • Dump the lot into the mixing bowl
    • Mix together
    • Place in plastic lunch box
    • Eat when hungry

If you make enough you can get 2 or 3 meals out of it. Tastes great and the raw veggies mask the tuna taste. Approx 35g of protein in there, plus lots of good carbs from the veggies. I usually make this after my gym sessions. Takes max 10 minutes. It is also very cheap if you buy a good few veggies once a week in the supermarket.

USN ones got 12g sugar - I found such ones at http://www.nutrishopping.com

those OLIMP bars got only 2,9g sugar and 25,6g protein (in total 243kcal) and cost less than USN's

Would the baking have any effect on the whey protein?
