I got a message from a Flickr user. I have emailed the site I'd imagine that was a waste of time.

I think the law is a bit of an ass when it comes to stuff like this. :(

Maybe I'm missing something here but when you post an image for millions to view on the web, what do you expect to happen? No offence intended.

You expect them to at least credit your work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

    Darren that's bloody bizarre!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭thefizz

I've never heard a thief credit the person they stole from.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭gerky

But the internet is a place of business now.
If you walk past a photography studio or gallery and they have pics on display its fine to look and enjoy but it doesn't mean its alright to take a picture without paying for it,so why should the internet be any different.

No offence taken. But it is illegal. Darren's is covered under a "Creative Commons" Licence so someone can reproduce it without permission so long as there is no money involved and he is credited. Mine is "All Rights Reserved". They have to ask first.

Daft making cars that can do 120 miles an hour and expecting people to stick to the speed limit.

Once it's on the net it's published but the copyright remains with the holder.

I knew this guy wanted to use my pictures, but I never checked to see what a nice piece he put together.

I wasn't complaining about my picture being on that site, I just thought it was a bit bizzare considering the headline and the image used

i see - well done darreng.

no doubt mashable arrived at your door, went down on one knee, and asked for your permission, sealed it with blood, etc.,, etc.,,,

wha ???? no ?????? so, now you've sent your lawyer over then with the baseball bats? it is after all tagged as being copyrighted, it is very clear from their screen grab.

    pixie-s.png
source: mashable.com just worried about their lawyers so had to put that in ;o)

hehehhehehehehhheeee........ but aint that the thing. sometimes we may be flattered and sometimes we may be flummoxed by someone taking liberty with our work.

Anyway, whether flattered or flummoxed - Congrats Darreng. Nice going.

A film director from India asked me if he could use one of my shots of the classic 'kino international' cinema in Berlin. He is compiling a book of cinemas around the world...

So it looks like I'll get a published picture in India :p

that break[dot]com website is based in america, you could so sue their ass for loads of money, that is 400,000 views of an ad worth of revenue that they have taken by stealing your work... if that is 1c each then thats $4000, I'd send threatening letters and then enquire as to a no win no fee lawyer in america... shouldn't be too hard to find.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,155 ✭✭✭SOL

And they deserve it, not because they didn't credit you but because they specifically said it was someone else...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,812 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

when i searched on Technorati and Ice Rocket whatever they are ?? -- a few of my photos are being used in blogs ... i did give permission for some to be used on Nowpublic.com , but some that i did not are being used --- also recently my flickr viewcount has jumped dramatically by about 2,000 views , don't know why ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Is there any particular photo on your flickr that suddenly has lots more views than the others?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

Barry - could be just the recent thread activity re: the exhibition - it appears to have gotten a lot of views (468 at the moment) - it would only take 100 of these views to transpose into viewing of your flickr stream (20 images each) to notch up the 2,000 views. But probably more viewers / less views per viewer would be the cause of it. Are the increased views on individual images in your dublin exhibition set? That would explain it. Cheers.
