Tallaght becoming a city?

I don't think this belongs in the Dublin forums because the transition of a town in to another city in Ireland is more of a nationwide issue.

Anyway, I hear that Tallaght is to become Irelands newest city. Apparently by 2012, Tallaght will be at city status. Anyone else hear this?

That would be the day. It still wouldn't get rid of half the scum in that hole of a place.

That's a British thing. I think the EU definition is a place with more than 100,000 non agricultural workers. Certainly that's the German one.

Think it's more than about time. For such a significant and major area, Tallaght has been woefully neglected by a succesion of governments. There's still only one single police station in an area that has over 100,000 people living in it. Sure, private development has increased substantially recently, but government spending and funding is still disgracefully low and were Tallaght to become a city, it might go some way to reversing this.

How can somewhere that is suburb of a city, expect to be recognised as a seperate city, I don't get it.

it was on the HearldAM/Metro yesterday morning, there is some government thing to create more cities for 2015. Along with 5 other dublin areas, Dun Laoghaire was one, also Nass and Tralee were mentioned.

Just got the main heading, as was reading off someone elses paper.

A reliable source if ever there was one. Maybe this is the government's Plan B for decentralization? Make each Dublin postcode a new city and, technically, they've decentralized. Cunning. More cunning than a fox what's been made professor of cunning at cunning university.

I agree with The Rigger, it's a suburb, how can it become a city in it's own right?

I can't see Naas being granted a city status, it's just a town and it's not that big. Plus as far as I'm aware it's having a hard time keeping business's in town with several long term business's shutting up shop and moving elsewhere or else just closing down.

I heard similar about Drogheda a while ago, not sure what happened, but its definatley a big town. I dont know if its big enough but given time.

Well done Tallaght. Some cities can be very close.

I suppose its similar to in belfast where lisburn which was once a suburb of belfast is now its own city.

For years now Dundalk has ment to become a city.

Dundalk, Drogheda & Sligo should all become a city before Tallaght.

That's a suburb of Baghdad. It's not a city, it's one of the nine administrative districs in the city- the city moniker is unofficial.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minneapolis-Saint_Paul

Or else it'll just become similar to Greater London, which is more likely.

Your little table there is utter arse..you are comparing inner city bounds (cork, limerick) with suburbs of dublin..

If you took a section of suburb of cork/limerick the size of tallaght you would get a similar figure...

The largest cities in ireland by population are:

    Dublin
    Cork
    Limerick
    Galway
    Waterford

Tallaght is a suburb of Dublin, making it a "city" would be a pretty pathetic move.. The pompousness of dublin people is astounding...

The whining of country folk when anything to do with Dublin is mentioned is also astounding.

I was going to try and explain this but i dont think its worth the effort.. these guys dont have a clue...

As an additional, the limerick city boundaries have not been expanded in over 100 years..excluding all the biggest suburbs like castletroy and dooradoyle and the university.. hence you get this ridiculous notion that galway is bigger that Limerick..

Not my table. Dublin's figure wouldn't be 506k.
