Here I am using IE because I'm fed up of sites not opening or firefox totally crashing.
I hate IE so that will tell you how annoyed I am at how crappy firefox has gone.
Yes I update firefox whenever theres a new version so I'm using the latest one.

It's latest crash meant I had to cntrl-alt-delete to close it and when I re opened it,it wanted me to be a default user ie lose all my book marks passwords etc.

    WTF like??

If you are fed up with firefox and hate IE. Try Opera or Safari. Though safari is supposed to be buggy. I haven't used wither much as I have never had a problem with firefox. How many extensions are you using?

    No extensions at all.
I can only open g mail for instance in one window/tab.
If I try another one I get a white page-I presume thats something simple? (I hope)
Loads of other sites just give me a white page randomly .

Yeah Firefox is pretty crap alright. People love to say how great it is, but that's (IMO) based on the crowd mentality more than anything else.

Opera is a lovely little browser. I use IE though.

I've never had problems like this with Firefox either. Is it the default browser on your system? Try the IE Tab extension for sites that won't display properly.

What crowd mentality? Only about a third of Ireland's online population use Firefox, IE is still the most popular.

if you're not a developer then get Opera NOW. firefox is only really usefull, imo, if you are developer. Opera has as many, if not more features, than firefox. Sure there might not be as many add ons because its not open source, but its free and a lot more stable.

I used to use Firefox but have switched back to IE. Lately I found Firefox to be more hassle than it's worth.

Yes but that third are the people in Ireland who actually know the IE doesn't equal the Internet. Seriosuly most people think IE = Internet and have no idea there are other browsers available.

You sure its 1/3rd? Or do you mean a third of intelligent internet users? I'd have said more like5%

I find myself using the task manager to kill Firefox several times a day as it tends to hog the RAM. Mind you I only have 512 RAM but this should be enough no? And it didn't happen so much before.

I may give Opera a go - it doesn't sound as cool though 8-)

ye I have to say I find firefox quite buggy since version 2 came on the scene.

That is probably a good indicator of how crap the broadband coverage is in Ireland as a far higher percentage of people that know what they are doing are online here than most other places in Europe. You have to really want to get on the internet in Ireland but for most people it's just not worth the hassle, and if you actually want to get on the internet then you probably already know there is more than just IE.

    +1 crap firefox

Firefox does crash too often for my liking and also uses too much memory. Going to try Opera for a while. It seems to get good reviews.

I regularly have firefox with 20+ tabs open. I've had Gmail open in four or five tabs a few times. Never gives me any hassle.

In my experience of IT support, people who give out about one application being terrible for them (when it works brilliantly for everyone else) tend to be the type of person who install all piles of crap on their machines.

im slowly slipping away from firefox myself, it annoyes when that i have use ie tab for more and more sites, i have opera installed and use it every now and then but the only thing really stopping me from using it is the fact that it doesnt have adblock or no script

if that happens, just go to task manager > processes, and kill any running "firefox.exe" processes. if you then reopen firefox, everything should be hunky dory again.
That used to happen to me when using a family pc that was fairly riddled with ****e (a windows xp installation that has been going for 6+ years), but hasn't happened once on my own pc or laptop.

Works perfectly for me, could just be that you've been using it for too long, and perhaps a clean install of it is in order...

Well from this thread and several other sites I've seen recently it's not working "brilliantly for everyone else" and I for one certainly don't have any crap installed.

What sites is it that people have to be using IEtab for? The only site that I have to use IE for is the windows update site, every other site I visit works perfectly fine with just the plain un-extended version of Firefox that I'm running.

Well I use the BioBar and MediLexicon Firefox extentions for work and find them an invaluable timesaver so Firefox rules imo :)

As a Biologist/medical writer these are two of the most useful browser tools I have ever come across.

I've been using Firefox since the early days and while it can be a little RAM intensive I find it to be perfectly usable and it almost never crashes. Anytime it does crash (usually due to something I've done), next time I restart it, it restores my previous session with all tabs. Excellent!

Some sites are blocking ff because of adblock not loading their ads and therefore ff users not contributing to their revenue. Bit silly really when you can just change what browser ff identifies itself as.

I've been using Firefox for about 3 years and spend a lot of time on the net, and i've never really had any problems with it, apart from the odd small thing. If a site doesn't display right in Firefox then it's a problem with the site, not firefox.

    P.S. I don't work for Mozilla ;)

    robinph wrote:

I found that Hotmail used to act the bollocks and take ages to load in FF, so I use IE Tab for that and for the new Windows Live version. Once in a while, I need it for some pages on some random sites that display badly (usually because whoever wrote them had a shaky grasp of HTML).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,010 ✭✭✭Dr_Teeth

Firefox works just fine for me.. if a site doesn't work properly, that's the site's problem. If I really have to use a site like that, I can always switch engines using the IE Tab addon.

and in my experience from IT support some programmes just don't live up to the hype and firefox 2 is one of them

firefox 2 is a bit buggy and it often crashes when opening pdfs

I used to use firefox all the time, but for some reason now it uses 100% processor memory. 1 minute opening a page isnt my idea of fun

http://dev.opera.com/ Has development related tools. Not tried them myself so I don't know what they're like.

To block ads on Opera, right click on the page and select block content. Then click what you want to get rid of :)

You can turn off javascript, java, sounds, animations and other stuff on a per-page basis by right clicking on the page and selecting edit site preferences.

    Just so you know :)

It's like a cult - FIREFOX RULES. IE IS ****. Etc. Little naive nerds in their little gang ;)

Just because Firefox is more standards compliant does not make it a better browser. I never have any problems getting websites to display in IE, but I often have problems in Firefox. I know why this is, but I don't care.

Also, Firefox is clunky and slow and a memory hogger.

The only problem being that IE is indeed, quite ****.

I'm using Opera and the only issue i've had it with PDF's but i have a sneaking suspicion it's to do with my copy of adobe acrobat that fell of the back of a lorry.

Anyway, seeing as IE7 is even worse that 6 from a usability point of view, i'm quite happy that a few poorly made sites won't display exactly right in opera rather than put up with a browser that appears to have been crafted from solid fail by UltraDingus, the lord of all morons.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

IE7 is lovely. Quick and pretty and never any problems browsing.

Opera is a lovely browser too.

User error, I have the latest FF and i don't think mine has crashed since about 4 or 5 updates ago

    Check your extensions

As an aside, if you have 90% of the browser market, then whatever your browser does is the standard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

Opera is where it is at!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭nobodythere

Opera does the job, lacks the extensions, but it's light, fast, starts quicker, bigger space to see the page. And a bunch of neato features.

    astrofool wrote:

It's a lot lower than 90% nowadays. Some countries show up to 40% usage of firefox. According to some recent slashdot article.

The standards were designated independent of the ruling browser, nowadays you have to code for all browsers and anyone who has done web design recently knows that IE is a real problem. Even when you set it to strictly follow the standards it doesn't. WTF like....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭Lirange

I think all the browsers are ****e.

I was on Firefox for a couple years then switched back to IE late last year. I recently tried Safari and Opera. Interweb browser standards seem to be going downhill. I've now settled in with the old Mozilla browser. It's the best of a bad bunch.

Firefox can be buggy though. It got a bit weird there after 2.0. It seems better now though (to me at least). That and some sites just don't work right on it (not that that's a fault of firefox or anything)

Opera has never done anything for me. I just never liked it. Now Lynx, there's a fully functional alternative to IE...
