I won't be buying one anytime soon, but still interested in seeing what it'll be :)

I'm happy with my iPod Shuffle, reason I got one is I'm sick to death of trying to stop screens from being scratched to hell :)

I just hope that all the existing devices that use the 5.5 Gen dock connector to remote control the ipod will work with this. I just blew 450 Euro on the Alpine IDA-X001 headunit!

Dunno all about that! *some* people have already played with it... set to be online some time after 6pm today, apparently.

Now, I have to shut up in case I get in trouble! :D

I'm wondering if there might me an AppleTV update/announcement. It kinda follows with the entertainment theme. Yeah just guessing tbh:p

My own 30gig is holding up fine, should last me for the next few months anyway. iPod wifi maybe?

Apple TV ---- Don't like it at all. Prefer Myth TV! More functionality and its open source.

Sorry to be the doom and gloom here, but don't buy first build product. Ever. From anyone. You will be their guinea pig to iron out all the kinks.

How is this first build? Its the 6G ipod and what the third or forth nano. Plus they have the iPhone to learn off for and kinks on the touchscreen interface.

I agree with you about first builds thats why I wouldn't go near an iPhone until the second or third one but thats for a different thread (which we have many of)

Its the 1st build of the 6th Gen iPod, its true first builds of new designs can have issues

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,109 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

If this is a touch screen iPod, its first build. They are making laptops and desktops long enough to learn but still bring our PR nightmares like the 5500, The Ti Powerbook, The "Please turn off the hoover in the background - Thats my G4 Mirror Drive Doors - OOPs", the original iPod etc etc. Not always their fault entirely, but until it gets people bashing it around 24/4, they don't know how new product will stand up until its released.Believe me, 4 1/2 years of taking migraine tables for new product releases in Apple has taught me the hard way. And yes I did buy a Mini C2D, but there was only a processor change involved there.......evolution, not revolution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Hehe!! Normally I don't buy a first rev, however I tend to err on the side of this being a merging of two existing technologies rather than an entirely new product. So,... I think I would be willing to take a chance. Having said that, I don't think I have ever bought a first rev of anything, so I agree it's not best practice, in general.

Me neither, badly executed imo. After reading a few threads over on macrumors some people have been suggesting an update to ATV too.

Any guesses on pricing for the proposed iPods? €300+ for the top of the range model?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,608 ✭✭✭Spud83

I bought the first rev of the video iPod and never had a problem with it (until it soaked one day). The main problems apple have had with iPod is the screen and battery. They ahve fixed the problem with there batteries as this hasn't been an issue with iPods for a good while so that shouldn't be a problem, as for the screen the seem to have fixed that with the iPhone. So in reality what they are doing is keeping the existing iPod(apart from capacity increase) and slapping on the iPhone touchscreen (no issues been reported apart from people using the keyboard which wont be an issue for an iPod), and using software which mostly can be ripped form the iPhones software. Besides any software problems can be fixed with a simple update. I certainly would not put off buying a new iPod because it the "first build".

but...but... if everyone took your advice, then the product would have no one to report issues to the manufacturer.

i know what you're getting at though.

Try taking 30-40 calls a day with iPod problems, one of 300 doing the same at the time. Batches of bad hard Drives added to their woes as well. The main problem with the battery is that you still can't replace the bugger yourself!!!!They have been warned and warned that it will get them into trouble, and they still sent the iPhone down the same route.

Your take on putting together a new product may be a bit oversimplistic too. They usually try new components to get the product thinner/lighter/better battery life/cheaper so its fairly rare to find stock components unless you look at MacBook/Minis.

Well I can understand your obvious sceptism over them if you worked support for them. But apart from the faulty hard drives(which will be new components as the iPhone is flash based and smaller capacity), how many problems were actually more user related/stupidity/ignorance rather than a manufacturing problem?. I agree about the battery being non replacable but thats not going to change in any revision.

I've my ipod up for sale.... Will be ordering the new one as soon as it hits the apple store.

balls to that - i have a first build macbook and 5.5g ipod and have had no problems with either. no problems with getting a first build today -

apples support has been good to me with previous ipods so i am not too worried IF anything does go wrong!

as said above - it is very unlikely the video ipod (touch) will be flash based. expecting 120 or 160 gig hard drives...

might get *something* along those lines.. Sounding like models from 60GB to 120GB.

At the moment low range is 30GB and high range is 80GB.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 30GB jumped to 80GB, and the 80GB jumps up to the 120-140 range.

Most importantly, this is the first gen iPods which are based upon OS X, which means software issues can be updated and bugs removed.

Re-reading that, I have to apologise for coming across a bit strong.
We all knew up there never to go for the new ones, and would generally be right when the calls came flooding in, no matter how much we wanted or desired it. There were a massive volume of really stupid calls, which really went haywire after the windows version came out:p .
But on a quiet moment we averaged our repair calls for iPods and it could be in the hundreds per day. 2nd and 3rd Gen as well usually quite shortly after they were released.
It wouldn't seem so big now with over 100M being sold, but this was in the days of only 2-3M sales worldwide.
I had to get a new laptop as my old one went swimming and I bought the rev A 12inch PB G4 867. Couldn't use it on your lap at all due to the heat and they eventually replaced it, but only because I worked there and sent it for repair 3 times. The next one, the 1Ghz kicked the fans on a lot earlier, and it has never had anything like the problem.
Of course there will be first builds that work perfectly, just as there will be dogs that are coming to end of life, but far and away the worst time for Tech Support is new product releases.

Never found one for an apple event. Apple put up with the live text/photo casting but full on video they wouldn't want.

They like to take the event and edit out any mistakes so that Steve looks like he never makes mistakes. Keep that God like image going.

The Keynote will be on the apple website prob 3 hours after the event itself
