Need advice

    Hi everyone,
I recently gave up the Fags. i used to be very fit back when I was a teenager but hormones and dreams of becoming a rockstar quickly led me down the alcohol and cigerette route. Saying all this though i never did drink alot but i have smoke heavily for the last ten years.

Im 5'11" and weigh ten stone. So i don't have any fat on me really. This disguises the fact that i am still unfit.

What would people recommend as a good way to start off a fitness program. I don't want to do too much too soon and i don't want to do too little

Any advice on a born again athlete?

    Cheers

just maybe some running, if your not mad into it just change it beteween slow long runs one day and then a short fast run another day and maybe find a park with a hill and do some sprints, i can get very specific if ya want! oh and swimming and some weights if ya have acces to a gym,
any more questions just post away, just keep it enjoyable for yourself, and maybe set a goal, like be able to run 10k in 50 mins.....

    Thanks Kingstew

You can get as specific as you like. I'd like to get back as fit as i was but I am so out of touch with the whole thing that i feel like a beginner again.

Swimming and running should be good. I tried cycling but the cars nearly killed me where I live LOL

    Cheers again

Try a few bodyweight exercises in the comfort of your home e.g. 10 pressups, squats, situps.

Maybe get a set of 10kg dumbells from a local sports store.

Do some light jogging and increase from there.

You'll be fine and feel great in no time!

yeah i could never get into the cycling thing myself, although running is quite lethal around school time/peak traffic times!!

if your into it, hiking is very very good for stamina too, lash on a heavy backpack and go for gold all around wicklow!

another thing to try is a type of running called fartlek...basically just on say a 30 min run, jog normal and then run faster for say 2 mins every 5 mins for example, did i make sense there??

www.simplefit.org if you're interested in starting out at home - they've a list of prescribed routines and a solid progression

www.crossfit.com if you're more adventurous or simplefit's too easy for you. There's an absolute wealth of knowledge on this site that will give you all you need to know about exercising

www.crossfit.ie if you're interested in personal training in a group setting :)

Congratz on giving up the cigarettes!

    Well done on the progression!!!!

Now then, your interested in adding a bit of lean mass so it might be an idea to post daily diet, if there are any gyms near you and maybe get a tad more specific about goals!!

Try splitting your push ups and pull ups into sets. Say 8-10 reps, and see how many sets you can do. With push ups, you can vary the width of your arms to target different areas, and put one foot on the other to increase resistance..

Dragan's advice about setting some goals is a good start from herein..

Okay, every post you have put up on fitness has this link in it. Give me a reason why i shouldn't assume you have some financial interest here and i won't ban you?

Hey there. Congrats on sticking with it and reporting back!

How about starting up a fitness log on the related board here? That way you will get a bit of feedback every week or two and people can comment on trends which they may spot which you might miss. Also, it will be a form of positive enforcement at the end of each training session.

As Dragan said, post up your diet. What about your weight? Is it going up or down? What is your weight now in kg? Kg is a bit more specific that stone.

Do you have access to a gym? Where are you doing your pull ups?

I wouldn't advise doing heaps of mindless running unless you are training for a specific event. It can get a tad boring and you will loss both fat :) and muscle  Perhaps 1 long run per week. 10km? Try and set a goal, e.g. 50 mins and work towards it.

On your other training days try to do squats, bench press, military press, bench.. .. finishing off with 15 mins jog or rowing. I suppose it comes down to time available and what equipment you have access to. If you cannot get to a gym let people here know and then can suggest other appropriate exercises.
