Congratulations sir, you must be very proud.

The best I managed to reach was 29.4 in late June.

    Now I am a pathetic 28.2.

Hanley just to hammer the point home you should post a pic of yourself in the top post to show just how stupid the BMI really is

I don't get why doctors use the bmi lark... they're meant to be clever individuals. I remember when one of the lads broke the news to us that he was clinically obese ... not an out of place bit of fat on him but his doctor decided to inform him of the fact. Madness.

Thank you so so much guys. All this wonderful support is really helping to deal with the self-loathing I'm experiencing at this current time. Sometimes I just don't know how to live with myself.

Check these out I just imputed Ronnie Coleman’s stats into a bmi calculator he comes out at 41.2 yes that is right Ronnie Coleman is MORBIDLY OBESE and so is Jay Cuttler (at their competition weight)

Now lets point and laugh at their fat ass's

Since BMI is reputed to be a predictor of overall health and the risks ones face I think it might be a good indicator when it coems to the guys above... (*puts on rain coats and sticks up umberella in anticipation of the sh!tstorm I just created*)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

The BMI on it's own is meaningless. With other indications like blood samples etc is begins to have meaning but to be honest if you have blood samples, waist-to-hip ratios etc you don't need to know someone's BMI...

The only reason it still survives is that it's an easy to use statistical tool that can be applied to samples that weren't intended for in the first place. That, and women's magazines.

Actually this may be a bit OT but can employers ask you your weight and height either in an interview or on an application form?

Looks like I'll be telling some white lies in the future if so.

Your biggest problem is life insurance forms where they ask for height and weight but nothing else sometimes. You might be paying the obesity rate as someone who is not obese.

Hopefully I'm wrong about this but I don't think I am. It's similar if you've ever been diagnosed with a mental illness. :(

And BMI discrimination strikes again :D

You'll find that very few people want to look like them.

In fact very few people would probably never be able to look like that even if they tried and took steroids as well ....... Jay and Ronnie are genetically gifted freaks and also they have been training hard since they were in High school. Jay was competing at 19 and Ronnie was a powerlifter until he did his first bodybuilding show at 26.

How old are you cheeky gal? You've surely done enough posting and, I presume, reading, on this site to realise that a few protein shakes and weight training will not automatically lead to looking like this.
However, for mere mortals, these guys represent the absolute pinnacle of exercise and diet, and for that reason they are regarded so highly by many.

Well condsidering employers aren't allowed ask where you live at your interview these days OR how you got into the interview, because the bus/walking is lower class and dart is upper class, it leaves the door open to discrimination, apparently!! (and I'm not even joking, I actually had this convo with a manager where I worked during the summer), so I doubt they can ask you your weight and height!

Medical insurance I would imagine can and do.

We've community level health insurance here (for the moment anyway), so I pay the same as a morbidly obese 88 year old chain smoking former asbestos cleaner, and so on.

I was going to comment along these lines earlier. It's illegal to ask the age of an interviewee or ask when they completed their leaving cert etc... (well, maybe not illegal to ask, you just don't have to supply it) because it has no baring on the job. I'm trying to think if something like height and weight would be a legitimate question though, I mean, if someone is 5ft and 20stone it's probably going to affect job performance (depending on the job). Anyway, if you're in for an interview, it's a moot point as they will see you in the flesh.

That's definately going to leave you open to a lawsuit.

Just imagine "fat people are stupid" (tabloid), "overweight people aren't as valuable a member of the workforce" (more respectable papers..)

Lets not have any doubts tho, being incredibly overweight IS going to affect your chances of getting the job. We already know employers are more likely to give the job to better looking people (male and female), so it's a natural extenstion that they'll give it to the "healthier" person too. Very hard to prove and I'm not commenting on whether or not it's justified. It's just what I would imagine goes on.

It's true. Depends on the job really though. Some places won't care.
