Hi , following a thread last night , i'm going to start looking into a personal exhibition somewhere in Dublin, of a year as a Dublin photographer --

I have created a set on my flickr
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/

    called "Dublin Exhibition"

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/sets/72157601815075448/

if anyone is bored today on this rainy day , not at electric picnic or not watching the hurling , and know my stuff maybe you can comment on what i may have left out , or what i can remove -- to start of i have 116 photos , would like to bring it down to 52 , so i need to be ruthless !
    Cheers.

I'm glad to see my favourite of yours has made the cut.
As a general comment I would say that your people photos are the strongest and if you have to cut some of the set, it might be worth concentrating on this aspect.
Its a good project, best of luck with it.:D

nilhg could well be right, maybe it's worth splitting it up between the people and the non people ones and seeing how they look together/apart.

Do you have them printed? It would be a lot easier to choose if you even have some 6x4s to pin up on a wall, and live with them for a couple of days - pretty sure you'll see the ones that fade into the background and the ones you still like.

    Good luck with it :)

thanks a mill guys - thats exactly the kind of advice i'm looking for , i've already been able to cut the selection in half , concentrating on people, and i've been a bit liberal , and inluded some that must get chopped , but i'll keep this fellow :)

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/1163874058/

and he's staying !! -- i've a few others that will need to get included including some from Smithfield horse market this morning , theres an experience shooting at dawn --- i'm no morning person, so remembering the essentials at that hour

elven -- i printed up some A3 's for the electric picnic this weekend , and i was pleasantly surprised how well they came up, know a good printer -- given some were shot with a 4 MP camera -- i know the math don't work out -- but i'm no mathematician -- thanks again --

great stuff barry. Its shaping up well. By this stage you've managed to get it down to early 70's so it's going to be hard going forward.

I offer the following only as ideas (so feel free to think my thoughts are crap ;o)

    - Although i like the guy lots, the "Spiritual Christy" i would drop - slightly blown out with the harsh lighting.

    - I'm glad your dancing girl made is sticking in there.

    - Not sure myself about "The Dubs are back". Perhaps it tells a story if you are a 'dub'.

    - "Contemplating the depressing Irish weather" and "Enjoying the Ringsend view" are similar - perhaps put one on the cut list?

    - I was going to suggest to add in "Inner city dublin crew" but i've noticed its there. It is similar to "The Liberty house crew" so maybe one would naturally take a cut. "The Liberty house crew" may be stronger although i do like "Inner city dublin crew".

I hope the above isn't too presumptuous and was something along the lines of what you were looking for. Apologies in advance if i've been harsh on any personal fav's.

I think the exhibition should be brill. Cheers.

    thanks "ancatdubh" (thats a mouthfull ) :)

anyway i kept the dubs one , i like the faces and smile -- but took up your other advice -- i'm back to 73 , as i added the smithfield horse market ones --
52 is the golden number !

heres a sample of smithfield today

    1307292644_4aa0ae06a4.jpg

Sezby - i took on board your advice , but i'm whacked out after my early start (for me )

this is my personal fav from today

Just an idea Barry, maybe get all 116 pictures printed out 6x4 and show them to both photo people and non photo people and see what you are left with after that and then you put your input into what you are keeping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

Barry, just had a look and you're down to 71 or 72. It was commented on that your images are a lot more powerful in a collection than individually and that is so true. When you look at them as a set, you can really see how good some of them are. I could easily suggest about 10 for you to remove, not because they aren't good, but because they obviously don't fit.
Also, could I suggest that you add some more contrast into your B+W conversions? Some of them pix are just crying out for it.

Good luck with the exhibition, make sure you let us know when it's on or if we can help out in any way

hey a man of your wealth could fund it ;)

seriously , i will have to look into some backing , which i intend doing , it was following good old Al's prompting that made me push a dream , into a reality -- and thanks again all for advice -- once i prune it down further (and i also see some ideal candidates) -- i will print 4 x6 's and review the set again -- i also have had contact from some famous-ish Dublin photographer (who i respect too :-) ), who is pushing me into doing something , and will help with further pruning -- thanks again guys - (and girls)

i cut it to 57 , this morning , were the ones axed , ones you had in mind also ?

    cheers.

Looks like it. I'd also cut :

Kick to the rhythm: it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the set. It doesn't say anything about Dublin.
Relaxing by the liffey: Looks like she didn't want her picture taken.
The Dubs Are Back: again, not really saying anything and feels a bit uncomfortable to look at for some reason. Plus, the Dubs are sh*te :D

thanks Paul , i took your advice , and am around the low 50s , where i want to be , i have few other ones that i need to review as well, and other bits and pieces for this thing are begining to happen , people to meet and review this week

    Really taking a shape now. Just one other thought;

There was one i viewed last night similar to "Model, smiler and the Golden lady on Grafton Street", with the model. To the left of the image there was left portion of a gentleman's collar (that would have been facing the camera). When i looked at it initially I thought - eeeekkk, i'd crop that out for sure. But when i remained looking at it i came to the conclusion that no, it was actually part of the model backdrop in the M&S (?) window. Don't know if i was right about this but i could just imagine people at an exhibition thinking the same, pausing then the realisation setting in. Don't know what you think, but eitherways the set does appear to be changing by the hour almost! Good luck again.

think thats his hood :) -- looks ok to me
anyway things are motoring along , i have a few interesting ideas for some funky venues , and have to meet a few people over the next week or so --
and the best news of all no one has said i am mad (which i am ) or the idea is stupid :)
2 new possible candidates from tonight

following a rotten day at work , more relationship issues , started the slow hunt for exhibition funds and decent Dublin venue , by the end of the day i was not a happy camper .. anyway i'd printed a few shots of the liffey street crew , which i handed them tonight -- and the smiles , gratitude , made what i do seam all worthwhile -- theres goodness in us all -- so i'll keep plugging away -- see some holding there valued prints , which they really loved .. so must be doing something right ;)

also got this lovely shot (reward)

That's a magic shot. I love the work you do, it's got a very natural quality to it. Keep it up!! Good luck with putting together the exhibition. For me, the one above should certainly be in there.

still going through the motions of putting this thing together -- trying to get an appropriate venue , and sorting out the money side -- its amazing the way what seams like a do able good idea , starts to become hard work --

anyway gave pete his framed photo today , and he really loved it (sober too !) -- seam to be doing something right :)

I was thinking, but I'm probably miles behind on this one, have you approached any of the homeless charities or SVP/Salvation Army or similar about staging an exhibition of your work? They may have either a space to exhibit, or else an event that your photos could feature at?

Or Dublin City Council might have spaces available, possibly even in the Civic Offices?

i've kind of taken my foot of this today , i looked a lot into it earlier in the week and yesterday -- as regards the photos , the feedback has all been positive --
met an esteemed pro photgrapher yesterday , and more importantly one i myself admire , and we whittled it down to mid 20's (he really liked them too and was positive and honest about exhibition difficulties) !)
here is the amended set 27
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/sets/72157601815075448/

then on tuesday i spoke to a "business" head and he wondered would companies really want there name associated with what i was displaying .. i had planned going to my company , large multi national IT , and chickened out, for now, for that reason .

Then last night i spoke to Peter Mc Verry , about the idea , and he liked the photos , but from an ethical value fealt they would be better thrown in with a mix of other normal/happier people . I really respect where he is coming from , and goes to proove there are many good people in the Catholic church doing wonderfull work ... so for now i plan to slowly build up a portfolio of 52 rounded images (the good , the bad and ugly ) ...

    The gift of photography

    1344213916_6c71408652.jpg

whilst i may never be famous or wealthy its nice to bring a bit of joy , the subjects and potraits are giving me rewards , as well as the subjects ...

... someday the exhibition will kick off

a few others that i like on
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/

and i'll get that magic 52

was kind of putting the exhibition on the long finger, then taking some more tonight my subjects encouraged me to proceed with the exhibition , very positive that they want an "exhibition of the people" from me -- so i'm re-motivated -- and like some of what i got tonight

    Hi Thebaz,

I don’t know if the name Padraig Parkinson means anything to you, probably not if your not into poker which I douth as I can see from your photos where all your time goes and well rewarded for it too. (The poker forum on boards.ie is massive)

Anyhow wheres this all going I hear you say, well Padraig Parkinson is a very well known international Irish poker player who just so happens to raise funds for the Simon Community via an annual Poker Charity Event. The event is to be held soon in Dublin. (sorry no actual dates or further details for this years event) but this is deffo going ahead, online games have already been played and tickets bought. Here is a link to last years event http://uk.pokernews.com/news/2006/5/irish-poker-tour.htm

I think over 400 players from all over the world took part in the tourney (some have huge bankrolls)
OK so I was thinking, the event hall is massive and has four walls that could easily exhibit your work, as the event is a charity associated with your feature work you should definetly approach the Simon Community about this. Green Joker Poker are involved (not sure about Paddy Power) from an online point of view and should be able to give you some more info. The event also has other days play so should probably last 4-5 days dont know if this lenght on time is enough for you?

Just to be clear I’ve nothing to do with the SC Charity, GJP or the event in anyway, basically I’m a terrible poker player who sometimes posts on boards and lurks in the photography forum.

So best of luck with this don’t give up.

thanks blip -- put a good bit of work into it last week -- and like all ideas , the motivation kind of went -- i need to plan it well i think , instead of jumping in -- theres so many different hurdles to jump -- proper sponsorship , and ensuring the subjects are all comfortable with whats shown etc , etc , and then theres my own time .. but from speaking to the guys tonight i want this to happen -- so thanks for your input -- havn't played poker for a long time , another vice ditched -- cheers mate

    Hey that's great news!

I was thinking too - have you looked at the Seomra Spraoi space? I haven't been to their new venue - it could be ****e for all I know TBH but their philosophy might be just what you need to get things moving, and a central spot too.

hey thanks Sinead , you are alwayd good with the old innovative ideas :)

i have popped them an email , its nice anyway to have a venue , it gives me also a deadline to work to, which is not too close !!

I showed a sample to a couple of local artists , and they were all extremly encouraging and positive -- so for now its all go !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,744 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

Hey -- checked out the Spraoi area tonight -- thanks Sinead

very freindly , and it would be cheap , and could probably do it without mega sponsorship -- theres a punky/hippy/anarcho vibe which i'm not sure would suit -- would the photos look better in a more polished professional gallery , like the one in dun Laoghare i have pre -booked , but that'll cost a few k - so would need serious sponsorship -- might be more relaxed at Spraoi --

    decisions , decisions
    cheers,

I think the 'vibe' you're getting from Seomra Spraoi could suit your work better than the polished professional gallery.

It was because of that vibe I thought of it Baz - I think it would really suit your work too. And their ethos of not charging doesn't do any harm either! If you're looking to sell a lot though I'm not sure you'd get much. I could be wrong there though..

as i said to them last night , if i break even i'd be happy -- can't see me making a killing at photography ;) --

still it would be nice to sell a few , and i'll have a bit of an informal opening , not a stuffy arty do

Just one other question , to any seasoned exhibitionist , or those in the "know" ( Al ??)

The room i'm showing in a reasonable sized room, and would comfortably take 52 images.

If i was to cull the 52 here

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/sets/72157601815075448/

to 25 , do you think this would have a better overall effect.

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

I think you really need to decide on which images to display, not just how many. The 52 you have chosen now is quite different to the 52 you had when I last looked (a few weeks ago). There is a core of about 20ish that I definitely would not leave out, but some of the others I could take or leave.
I think you mentioned before that you know a pro, any chance you could sit down with him and go through them with a really critical eye and cull the ones that really don't make the grade? I know it's difficult because you have your favourites, but they are not necessarily the right ones for exhibition if you know what I mean?

Thank you Sinead , you and Al , kick started this idea into a reality .....

Paul , its kind of werd , i know quite a few artists , and they always pick the ones i am about to cull as there favorite .... for instance the girl against the wall , was going to go

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/533795359/

but an artist freind of mine loves it ....

Back to my query maybe 30 would be a reasonable number !
