    Hi

Not sure how to put this but I am looking for some one who would be willing to help me get to the standard of fitness for the Defense Forces. I know this is a lot to ask but I really need help because I feel like I am failing on my own.

At the minute I can run two laps and then I feel like giving up. I have just started to weight lift (10lbs) and I do 20 push ups and sit ups every day before starting work but as I said I feel like I could do with some one who has a bit more experience with this, I know it's a lot to ask but this is my last chance to get into the army as I am 23 so I will give it 100 %

Any advice would be grateful and if some one would like to help with this, would be great!

    Thanks for even reading this!

    Cliodhna

Would it be possible to talk directly to the drill instructers and get an idea off them what you need to do to prepare for it?

For the Army I have to be able to run 1.5 miles and do 20 push ups and sit ups to pass the PT test. I would be willing to train any where in Dublin, I have a car so I can travel which is always good. I'll look up that as well - I need all the advice I can get with this! Thanks guys! :D

How long do you have to complete these ??

11 minutes 30 seconds for the mile and a half for men, 13 minutes for women and a minute each for the 20 sit-ups and press-ups, modified press-ups and sit-ups for women.

Doable for people of a realistic level of fitness to be considering the army tbh.

Yeah, well there's other stuff they test but bluntly if you can't do the above I really cannot see why you'd even consider joining the army.

The above always struck me as "idiot filters" rather than gold standards. If you can't do the above there's little hope you'll be able to handle the hikes with a full bag of gear on your back etc. They're just saving everybody's time by making this cut this early.

OP, realistically you should be able to attain the above. Do a lap of running followed by a lap of walking and over time cut down on the time spent walking and run more. Do more than the bare minimum, run longer than a mile and do more than 20 sit ups and press ups in your training and you should be able to pass them fairly easily so long as you haven't left it too late. Realistically you should be able to jog/walk a mile in 10 minutes so it's fairly doable.

To be fair, thats the minimum entrance standard, not the standard they expect you to be at after training. Think what anyone would be when they joined a gym etc. and then think 2 years later.

The Army for me is about testing myself mentally and physically. My brother's in the army so that has a factor as well..... I am excited about doing it all because I know I can do it but I just need to prove it to myself before it will come real.

The Army is all I really know from the age of 14 when I left school it's all I can think of. I eat, sleep and breath it. This is my last chance so I want this so much......

you have to be able to run faster though

OP, where and when can you train?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,284 ✭✭✭pwd

I trained for one of these before changing my mind about actually applying. I don't think the running component of the fitness test is that easy - certainly it took me a few months to be within the required standard.

The best way of training for this sort of speed endurance test seems to be to do interval training. Split the distance up: for example you might not be able to run 1.5m in 11.30 but maybe you could run half a mile in 3.40, rest for a minute, run another half mile at that speed and so on.

It can be difficult to find a track or a way of measuring distances. Treadmills are far easier to run on than the ground is - so avoid using them if you need to train seriously for running.

To get your 13m target for 1.5miles intervals will be the way forward along with some long (ish) runs. Depends on many factors:

    How long do you have?
    What can you run now?
How many days a week can you train?
    Where are you based?

To get your pushups/situps target I'd say do pushups and situps.

    target is 11m30s not 13m

Not if you're female. At a guess from the OP's username this might be the case.

I want to go for the Regular Army - not the Cadetship ship. I don't think I would be suited in the Cadetship. I usually run in the park near me for twenty minutes ... as I said I am failing...... lol... I have just started to I am trying to work up to it. I have sent the application off already so just waiting to hear back, (yes I am female btw :D ) I need as much help as possible as I don't know where to start. I usually warm up first, then I would do four laps of the pitch then squats and then another two laps of the pitch before doing 30 push ups and 30 sit ups... I need some one to train with me other wise I am just going to give up and I can't give up.

I can train Mondays, Wed,Thursday, Saturdays (after 7pm) and All Day Sunday. I am in the barracks on Tuesdays and in work late on Fridays. I can train any where around Dublin as I have a car. Some times I like to goto Glendalough and I usually climb as much as I can. I am determined enough to do this. So if any one wanted to help me please feel free to PM me.

    hey demoness,
if i remember right to train for the entrance exam for the army i ran around a football pitch, i think i used to do 7 laps but id make sure that i kept a constant pace, im think i used to do it so that every lap took me 3 minutes and i breezed through the test, and once you can comfortably do 20 pushups and sit ups in a min youll be fine.

a thing to remember is that theres a fitness test every year in the army where you have to run 3.2km or 2 mile in less that 13.30mins i think and do at least 25 pushups and situps.

if you even have trouble with training for the entrance test i suggest you should have a think about how much you REALLY want it because during you 6 months training if your not fit you really will suffer :(

I really want this.... so much that if I fail the Irish Army I will apply for the British army. I have given up all take aways, sweets and all junk food. All I know is the Army life and I'm not prepared to let myself fail like that. It's too important to me. I really need some one to help me though, If I am on my own I feel like I will give up but if I am with some one then I wont

You never said what part of the country you are in though, so hard to get a training partner without specificing where tbh.

Also i find that motivational music will get me through many a work out when i dont think i can do it or dont want to finish.

Now this is going to sound harsh...

But if you really REALLY want it then it doesn't matter who you're training with. It doesn't matter where you're training. If you REALLY want it then you'll find it in yourself to go that extra mile. To squeeze out that extra rep. If you REALLY want it then nothing else matters.

Saying it is easy. Following thru and doing it is what builds character and makes champions.

Hanley is right. If you really want it you'll find a way. You'll find it hard for someone to sacrifice their training time to be your training partner as the people who will give you the best advice will be at a totally different level and not be in a position to be your training partner.

Someone will be willing to maybe train you or coach or give a programme but if you aren't willing to put it in yourself then you obviously don't really want it.

Here seem to be your options
1 Hire a reputable personal trainer (at a fairly high cost)
    2 Join a club (running/martial arts whatever)
3 Take ownership of this, educate yourself, ask questions
4 Find a training partner on boards

Option 1 & 2 will gaurantee success once your up for it, option 3 will depend on you and option 4 will be hit and miss.

Can't remember the exact % but when US Collegiate athletes of many sports were once asked would they sacrifice a limb to be Olympic Champion, a large % said yes. Do you want it that much?

Also there was a question asked of *******ns if that they could take something that would gaurantee them a gold medal, but would mean they'd die soon afterwards then would they take it? i believe the majority said yes.

I don’t know about dieing for my goals but Id sure wouldn’t mind giving up a kidney/lung:D If you rely want it you will put in the effort:cool: it’s discouraging to see the amount of people that turn up at the gym and talk enthusiastically about goals like weight loss, but they wont break a sweat in the gym  and then they leave the gym and just don’t bother to change their lifestyle:confused:

    Ps

Hanley if you are reading this and you get a chance could you please check your Pm’s thanks ;)
