It started production earlier this month and puts Christopher Lee back in the role of death. :D

Not sure about David jason as Rincewind - I can't move past the idea of Eric Idle as him, (from the computer game).

Is this a production for Sky again? Hmmmm...

Yeah, David Jason as Rincewind seems a bit off. Good God, Rodney from Only Fools and Horses would make a more credible Rincewind than Jason.:)

Same company alright, don't know if it'll be for tele or not, but likely.

They had adverts on Discworld websites for extras. Looked like that could have been fun.

Good shout on the Rodney actor - he would have been perfect!

David Jason is very versitile. He'll be a fine Rincewind. Din't he do Toad and something in Duckula? And Danger Mouse.
    And Inspector Frost.

Also I do see Rincewind as an older person. he's not young.

Neither is Rodney any more. ;)

I suspect the main reason David Jason is playing Rincwind is because The Colour of magic is because it's his favourite book, and he is a big name.

But David Jason played Albert in Hogfather. I can't remember 100% but doesn't Rincewind meet Albert in The Light Fantastic?

I think Rodders would have played a brilliant Rincewind. I always pictured Rincewind as tall and clumsy.

Also, I see that Mr Pratchett himself has got a part.

And some actor plays the Luggage :D How does an actor play the Luggage? It's not as if he gets into Luggage makeup. The Luggage doesn't speak, so it's not the voice. How does an actor play The Luggage???? :D

I see Tim Curry is in it. You know, I was just thinking there who would make a good Cohen the Barbarian for the Light Fantastic, and I came up with Jack Leslie (is he still alive!?), the disco dancing octogenarian aristocrat from Co Monaghan.

He's not an actor but he fits the physical dimensions of Genghiz Cohen.

I always saw Cohen as being old and fragile but still with a bit of buzz left in him. Maybe David Kelly might be too old for it....:D

I always saw Cohen as looking like he's barely able to lift his sword, which is half the size of him, save when there is barbarianing to be done... frail ol guy!

Mort I think. That would make for an interesting conundrum for them. :)

First time I've heard about this! Nice one!

Does anyone know for sure yet if it's gonna be another for tv deal like Hogfather or is it gonna be a cinema release?

IMDB lists it as (TV) so probably will be like Hogfather,

Would be nice if it came out at Christmas again

Well it's being adapted by Vadim Jean and I liked the way he preserved Hogfather. I always saw Rincewind as older anyway, sure he worked in the library for years.

Where did you find the movie poster? Do you know where or if it is for sale anywhere?

shame about david jason as rincewind, I would much have prefered somebody like Rob Brydon (or ... just Rob Brydon) in the role.

But, Jason is a class actor.

I wasn't overly impressed with the Hogfather, but it was never one of my favourites, so looking forward to colour of magic.

Do Sky plan on making any more of these or are they playing it by year?

Anyone else kinda excited about this? I've just seen the ad on Sky a few times now :D
It being the first book in the series, it'll always have a special place in my heart. Hope the translation does it justice! And who here doesnt like a bit of Tim Currey, eh? :p

When was Christopher Lee originally in the role of death i.e. was it in another film?

And the gulgafrinchin captain in Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy (in the bath tub).

I thought the Hogfather was pretty woeful on television, but then again it was by no means one of the better discworlds. So The Colour of Magic, being such a great book, could be really good.

I just googled it. Can't remember which site I took it from. Would make a great poster on the bedroom wall though, if I were 20 years younger :o. Maybe I'll get one for my son. :D

In the animated versions of 'Wyrd Sisters' and 'Soul Music', made for Channel 4 about 10 years ago.

I just read that Jeremy Irons is playing Vetinari in 'The Colour of Magic'. That should be good.

Also, I hadn't realised that the movie is actually 2 books combined - 'The Light Fantastic' as well as 'The Colour of Magic'.

is it? excellent. Hopefully they include the lulz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭kittex

Yeah, if you go on the site http://www.skyoneonline.co.uk/tcom/ drop down the Terry Pratchett menu and read the 'Interview' section., he talks a little about why it made sense to combine the two books.

Thats a good choice actually. Either him or Alan Rickman.

I wonder how big the budget is for Hogfather and this-presumably not that much? Its a pity they don't have LOTR type budget!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,342 ✭✭✭seagull

I picture Rincewind as tall, skinny and gangly, and somewhere in his mid 30s in the colour of magic. I can't really see David Jason as being the right body shape or age for Rincewind.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Hmm...

I'll be looking forward to this, but I do think that David Jason isn't right for the role. I found him quite terrible as Albert in The Hogfather. I've always had David Thewlis in mind as Rincewind myself.

Still, I enjoyed The Hogfather, so this should be good. Nice to see Lee back as death as well, and Jeremy Irons, oh my! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭kittex

The thing that's p-ing me off is that being on Virgin Media in the UK means I won't even get to see this until it's repeated on one of the Sky movie channels.
With 'Hogfather' they did it that same week, but I don't see 'Colour of Magic' listed at all this time round. :(

    I won't mention the 'T' word.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭deman

I'm really looking forward to seeing this, even if I always imagined Rincewind to be more like Rodders than Del Boy.

And [kittex] according to the ad, it's on Sky One.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,399 ✭✭✭✭Thanx 4 The Fish

Am not sure if I am looking forward to it or not. As well as that, I would have preferred somebody else as twoflower, like Mr Miyagi or somesuch, that is always how I imagined him anyway. And I have always thought of rincewind as a tall gangly useless fecker.

Yes, it is... but as I said, Virgin Media customer are not allowed subscribe to/access Sky One. So, as with 'Hogfather' I was hoping for a repeat on the SKY movie channels, as we can access those.

    very disappointing

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 14,549 Mod ✭✭✭✭johnnyskeleton

Wasn't very funny, and the guy playing twoflower wasn't great, but it wasn't bad.

Better in my view than the Hogfather, but nowhere near the same pace and wit of the book.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Was it just me, or did that all feel very "flat"? No pacing in the plot or the direction, no sense of comedic timing, no nothing. It all felt forced and stagey without any kind of zip or charm. Worst of all, I didn't actually laugh.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

Death was great, couple of funny moments. They need to stop putting EVERYTHING from the books in, I think it messes the pace. I did LOL a couple of times though and I didnt for Hogfather.

John cleese, I reckon John Cleese as Rincewind would have made the part. Enjoyed the book, am feeling a little low anyway after the footy results and was hoping that this would lift it a bit. It didn't.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

I take it no one is holding much hope for the light fantastic tomorrow, so?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

I thought it was very good, its not a book and cant be a book so expecting it to be is silly.

Was shocked that Rincewind was actually ok, think maybe the near deaths scenes worked well.

Read the books during the week and happy enough with the tv show, would have been better to watch without the ads and all in one go. Think the breaks were put in badly.

I always thought David Kelly would make a good Lu-Tze, then again i think the publics general agreement on the fact that Pat Motrita as the Lu-Tze man.. but being dead would make him a better candidate for Redge Shoe

his quote from it was.. Dont worry about me, i've got a book, and in like five lines later, i already know that the butler did it..

very good point, I listen to them, i have around 23 Pratchett Books on AUdio CD so i listen and read them... or its not that hard ro find out when it was..
it was in Thud! my bad...

    Utter failure.

Apart from Tim Curry and James Cosmo, and a few of the smaller roles from Jeremy Irons and Christopher Lee, it was just awful in every way. The humour felt extremely forced, and it was played overly silly. I'd agree with the sentiments that it was childish.

I would really hope that Sky doesn't make any more of these...
