    I never got a confirmation email:confused::confused:

I haven't gotten word from Trinity either so I wouldn't worry about it. We don't start until October so they're not in as much a rush as other colleges to send out information.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 280 ✭✭SamHamilton

I received a letter from Trinity today covering fees and stuff but I didn't receive anything regarding Trinity Halls. Same for you Dan719 and Cookiemonst3r?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 238 ✭✭cookiemonst3r

yes!! phew i thought it was just me... there was absolutely nothing in it about accomodation at all.

Welcome to Trinity, folks. Where the left hand hasn't known what the right hand is doing since 1592.

(Indeed, don't worry - the letters are coming from separate offices that operate independently of each other).

Online it states that 'formal offers will be posted by Monday September 3rd'. I would not be worried considering that probably means they were posted today,

Uh-huh. For all intents and purposes I've started my phd now, got the keys for the building, bank details are in, even goin to zurich tomorrow with the group to do measurementsthere. But my application that I sent to the university month ago, with cv and references etc hasn't even reached my supervisor. I've also no computer account and no student number as of yet. You get used to the inefficiency.

dont worry , when they say monday 3rd, they lie! tho just for pure personal entertainment, yo ushould ring them and ask why you have not received your letter yet. you will get a very smart answer about 3 women not being able to personnally write and post to over 1,000 students in one day....

I got offered temporary accomodation. Probably not worth taking, eh?

Recieved my offer today- sharing with a person by the name of Z.wong- just in case they happen to be on this forum.

The first weekend in Halls...are parties allowed or sort of allowed? The lads were on about a housewarming etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭balzarywex

'Parties', or gatherings of 8 or more people, are technically not allowed.
BUT I suppose things would be let slide moreso than normal that weekend. Usually throughout the year, security will just come and advise you to keep it down a bit. Having said that, several of us did succeed in getting meetings with the warden and being fined, even during the first weekend. Shouldn't have much to worry about though as long as you don't start throwing tv's through the warden's window at 3 in the morning.

Much free booze will be provided by the JCR anyway (I think this current JCR, based on the sports day anyway, are fans of Dutch Gold, Druids and wine). Can't remember much from last year (!) but there was a party the first night, club night out the saturday, karaoke on sunday etc.

First weekend in Halls was better than all Fresher's week last year! Can't wait to move back in again!:D

i'm so looking forward to all of this (anyone in 83.03 by the way?? there should be a separate forum-doesn't have to be on boards.ie, but maybe it should just be facilitated by tcd that lets flatmates know eachother before move in)

so are the wardens, security, etc very strict? are parties common among the flats in the halls? i would consider getting fined very strict... but i suppose it could be worse. and when you say 'technically' not allowed-does that just mean the technicality isn't enforced?/is it easy to break the rules and get away with it?

also i saw something about the guest policy on the TCD website/the halls handbook-but is that strictly enforced? i'm talking about student friends at different schools that are visiting (i guess-is it easy to smuggle them in, as creepy as that sounds-to stay on your floor for the night, or several)

any info would be greatly appreciated! sorry for all the questions-i'm just very excited here.

during the first weekend, most rules go out the window. as in the wardens (believe it or not) arent there to ruin your first weekend in halls. tho there will be no need for your own parties as that is the whole purpose of the jcr! they are moving up next week to organise their biggest baby, orientation weekend. as far as i know, they are organising 2 nights out on the town, which will be after a full drinks reception in oldham house (which is the big massive old house in the middle of halls complex that is for student activity and is all common rooms)

the 2 years i spent in halls, i found that the orientation weekends were far better than freshers week in college ( ok i no im slighly bias about last year seeing as i was on the jcr myself)

take full advantage of getting to know as many people as you can. freshers weekend i find is all about open door policy between apartment, just loads of people going around and introducing themselves to random apartments, absolutely brilliant fun.

its not that they are amazingly strict its just that they are trying to be fair to all students. some wardens are fairer than others, as in if you are having a party that is getting very roudy, they will break up the party but will give you a chance to get rid of everyone first and plea you case. other wardens ( yoll soon figure out who after freshers weekend!!!) will just immediately take your name and make you have a meeting with brendan (senior warden, the boss!)

as regards getting people in adn out, there is no problem, the security gaurds are mad craic! some are grumpy old men but the majority are pure gentlemen (many had to deal with me forgetting my apartment number, never mind loosing my swipe card!) they are not manning the 2 gates, they stay in the office so its not like they will be looking to see if everyone piling out of a taxi 4 in the morning is carrying both a trinity id and a swipecard to say they are form halls.

get on the good side of the security guards on the first weekend, and you be grand!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭balzarywex

What mizz.yelof said! One of the security guys made me a cup of tea once when I was a little, ahem, 'disorientated'. Sound guys! I heart Brendan also!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Thirded. The security are, for the most part, lovely. The wardens and Brendan are fair at the very, very least, and nearly always nicer than that. It's not about "no parties", it's about "not disturbing anyone else", see? I've had 20 people in my kitchen, clearly visible from the courtyard, and nobody said anything because we were quiet and weren't disturbing anyone. There are literally only one or two less-than-nice authority figures (won't mention names here), but you'll figure that out yourself.

Oh, and enjoy it! As you can probably tell, anyone who has lived in Halls has fantastic memories of the place. You'll have amazing fun and meet loads of cool people, and will need some serious rest after your 9 months there, because there's always a party to go to there. I'm gonna miss it this year!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 xason1

Thanks everyone!! I'll be sure now to at least attempt to make peace with the security guards.

I still have heard nothing from TCD about accommodation. Should I be worried about this? I don't want to miss any deadlines for deposit payments etc.

At this stage you should probably give the accommodation office in college/Halls a ring and see what the story is. Most people should have received their information by now.

The fees for the first term have to be paid by the 14th of this month; that's Friday! They don't give much time do they? :( Are there any penalties for being a bit late on the payment?

Is that the c. E1400? I still haven't paid the 250 deposit. I was gonna pay it today. But jaysus, might be a while before i have 1400? gulp.

I paid the 250 one but it says on the pages we were sent out that Period 1 payment is due by the 14th of September. I have a single room which means it's 1777! But then I checked out the website today and they've added on utility charges so now it's 2112 or there abouts! I'm going to have to get a loan tommorrow. Don't have the heart to ask my Dad for the cash!

WAIT now, I've a single room as well. Does that mean that I've to pay 2112, just for the period sep- dec? Thats ridiculous IMO. I could probably get something cheaper if i looked. How much does it cost for the whole year altogether then?

You might be in the Cunningham House whereas I'm in the modern place. The fees for Cunningham are less.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 534 ✭✭✭sd123

ye, i am in the cunningham hse, why is it cheaper there?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 280 ✭✭SamHamilton

Yeah. It's 1493 from sep to dec with a utility charge of 265, so it's about 1750 in all. About 367 euro cheaper.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 280 ✭✭SamHamilton

In Cunningham you have to share a bathroom and a kitchen. I've read somewhere on boards that the rooms aren't up to scratch but I can't say whether that's true or not. In the modern apartments you have a bathroom to yourself and you're sharing the kitchen with only about 6 others and the rooms are supposed to be great. There's a thread on this somewhere, I think in the stickied "have a question about Trinity" or something to that effect.

If you're in halls early, unpack all your stuff so you can hang out and meet people on move-in day. Oh yeah, and claim the best cupboard in the kitchen! (ie, the one that isn't either side of the oven or over the cooker.)

Re. Rent - Yup, most expensive student accommodation in Europe. You definitely could find a cheaper place.. but, with the student housing crisis, be glad you've got a place here!

Cunningham is.. well.. it's old.. The rooms are small, with very little storage space. It's quite dark, and the walls are thin.
However, there's a great atmosphere.. a great sense of community because ye live in such close quarters to each other. Also, the showers, toilets, stairwells etc. are cleaned very frequently by the absolutely lovely cleaning staff, so it's always pretty clean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

I got mine in the post the other day... A cheque for €166.67, or something around that mark. I'd actually completely forgotten about it.

If you haven't got yours, you should give them a ring. I'm sure they'll be amazingly helpful!

(Actually, I have to commend them on one point: I rang them a few days ago to get a reference for my future landlord, and they had it ready not thirty minutes after I hung up. Now THAT'S service.)

Start packing gradually from now until thursday. Don't do what I did last year and leave it til the morning you leave for Halls - stumbling around the house at 5 in the morning looking for your wok is not fun!

I third it. And, anything household-y that you can't find/steal from home, write it down. Then, encourage your parents/family to stop off in Dundrum before you arrive in halls, and buy all that stuff on your list for you. Also, get about a month's worth of shopping. Actually, **** that, get two months' worth. You'll thank me in November when, instead of eating tinned mushrooms on Ryvita, you'll have Actual Food still in your cupboard.
