Rugby World Cup 2007 TV coverage

Just found out at the weekend that the rights to show the games are owned by, TV3, UTV and Setanta.

Considering none of these stations have experience showing rugby and as TV3 and UTV are ****e at covering soccer, i despair as to how bad this could end up being.

(Is here a rugby equivalent for Robbie Earle to cover the rugby for ITV)

Does anyone know if it's Setanta Ireland( which is free on Chorus) that is showing the games or is it their subscription sports channels (like the premiership)

I'm thinking of turning the sound down and listening to Newstalk for their commentry.

ITV had the rugby world cup last time and it wasn't so bad; but yeah would have prefered to watch it on RTE. TV3 are using the guy from The Last Word on Today FM to present their coverage i'm not so sure how that will work out.

I hear that ITV have gotten a lend of some commentators from Sky so that should improve it a bit. TV3 I will be avoiding completely so it will be ITV or Setanta for me.

I never understand why the BBC doesn't get the rights :(

It will be interesting but ITV-lovers beware, UTV will be opting out for the Ireland games to do their own presentation and commentary.

Pity the lack of Hook and Pope though...

Oh lord - who's going to be anchoring that? Maybe they can bring Jackie Fullerton in on loan.. :p

Yeah it was very clear in Tom McGurk's closing saying 'nearly everyone's got the coverage but them', :o "we'll see you for the Heineken Cup"

Some of the Ireland games will be on ITV4 so at least that option will be there. I can imagine it will be better than what UTV give.

Here is a schedule showing what is on what ITV channel.

The IRB sold the rights for the RWC for 2003 and 2007 as a single package for England. BBC by all accounts made a hideously low offer (they weren't afraid of Sky because England's RWC are free to air) but they never even suspected ITV to come in with an offer. ITV saw there chance and took it.

Blame the TV stations not the sports organisations. It's the BBCs and RTEs fault that we have to watch it on lesser channels

I have a nice RWC calender showing broadcasting times and stations if anyone is interested... How de **** do I attach something?

Yup, and his crazy ties wont be polluting my TV this autum!!

Rugby is evolving into a faster game and I dont think Hook likes it, where as Pope is taking it and moving forward with the game..

That's simply not true. Setanta were always going to outbid RTÉ when it came to buying the rights, simply because they know that RTÉ could never match the money they have available. RTÉ couldn't justify spending as much money as Setanta did on the rights. Other sporting bodies take other things into account when selling rights such as level of coverage, online and radio options, magazine programmes etc which is why RTÉ get rights to things like the GAA championship.. The IRB simply wanted the most money they could get and RTÉ didn't have a hope.

Then when Setanta needed to offload the rights to a terestrial broadcaster for the Irish games, TV3 funnily enough secured them because they are part owned by the same people as Setanta. It's not as black and white as people think it is.. There's a lot of politics in there too.

Neither would I. You've got the likes of Sky going into the GAA with massive money this year, so it'll be really interesting to see what happens. RTÉ will probably hold onto it for another few years, but I could see big changes happening further down the line..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

I was mainly referring to the English channels but AFAIK RTE didn't think Setanta were as interested as they obviously were in the RWC rights. Anyway you'd think they might have had a fair few bob lying around the rugby section of the sports department after they lost the Heino as well

I think the next round of GAA will break down something like the Premiership with RTE getting first pick of games on Sunday and Sat nights and Setanta picking up the rest.
Could definitely see most of the NFL rights going to Setanta since RTE don't give a fcuk about it. TG4 will pick up some slack their as well with the remaining NFL and club games

Quick question may sound stupid but can you tell setanta you just want it for the world cup ie. 2 months or so? I read somewhere you have to give 30 days notice to end subscription.

I think there doing a trial at the moment where you can sign up with them for 2 or 3 months with no obligation for the year. Not 100% sure though

so now that we all know who is and who is not showing the rugby on tv, who are we all going to watch.

i think we can agree that with 2 stations new to the rugby scene (less so setanta as they show quite a bit of club stuff) the coverage may suffer. We will all be unfamiliar with the commentery teams and the anaylsis teams. I have heard that setanta are getting the "loan" of stuart barnes and another person from sky, but i always found barnes to be anti-everybody bar england in a slightly less annoying form than brian "cloud on silver lining" moore.

TV3 will prob stick in that git who over pre-nu-ci-ates everything for the commertary which will ruin any game. and ITV for the irish games will get the whistling northern irish presenter (if you have no idea what i am talking about watch a few apres match skits) and the most biased pundits ever ("the only good player today was rory best/andrew trimble", "the whole team should be the ulster team").

So the choices are annoying commentary (tv3), annoying biased views (UTV) or annoying englishmen :D (setanta)

whatever faults hook, popey and mcgurk have, i would pick them any day.

Any idea what network will be showing it in the USA. I will be over there for 3 weeks during the world cup

Isn't Setanat available in the US if not it may be on ESPN.

Dosen't matter what channel I will have on as the volume will be muted and RTE Radio1 will be on with Michael Corcoran doing commentary for Ireland's games. If we don't have to hear from Ryle Nugent then its no loss that RTE lost the TV coverage. They could just as easily have McGurk and the boys on the radio.

The problem is the usual lag, which is probably more annoying than bad commentary. It's even worse on digital tv.

In that case it will be TV3 on terrestrial as i reckon its the closest to live FM broadcast

Ehh...no. Newstalk have the rights for it on the wireless if I'm not mistaken.

You are correct. RTÉ have no coverage on television or radio.

Setanta is a month by month basis, so you can get it for a month and cancel it before the second month and you will be grand. That is my understanding anyways.

i find it astonishing that the two stalwarts of rugby coverage the..BBC & RTE who show the 6nations year in year out, are not showing the one that really matters...the world cup.

what the f&ck is going on!!:(

BBC haven't shown world cup since 1987 (and even then I'm not sure) but from 1991 on its been ITV in Britain.

RTE hit a cpmfort zone and assumed they get the Irish rights to everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭Scobius90

so are Setanta showing the rugby on their free channel on NTL/Chorus Digital or do i have to subscribe to their premium channel?

Are you saying they didn't want the rights to Rugby World Cup? I realise they may have been outbid, but thats kind of the point I was making

I would rather RTÉ didn't blow the budget on the World Cup.

No I'm making the point I made in a lot more detail near the beginning of the thread. If they can't afford it, they can't afford it - simple as. They don't exactly have an infinite amount of money to spend on rights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,397 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Fair enough. I still think they assumed they'd get the rights

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭pd101

As far as i know there are four channels on sky that are showing games.

    TV3
SC4 - if you can understand welsh
TV5 - if you can understand french
    UTV

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭Jip

You can also tune in ITV1, 2, 3 and 4 on Sky which will, afaik, cover every single match,
