Depends on the commentary to be honest. I cant stand setanta's commentators half the time and if Johnaton Davis [however he spells it] is on bbc ill switch instantly. Wonder who will be commentating TV3

Btw did anyone notice after the Italy match when Tom was signing off saying that this was the last of RTE's RWC coverage he hear Popey go "WHAT???"

    Conor McNamara and Phillip Matthews.

It'll probably be ITV for me, though I'll have a look at TV3's coverage first and see how they're doing before I make a decision.

TV3 are showing very few of the games outside of the Ireland ones (only 2 QFs:mad: )and alot of the ITV games are spread over ITV 2/3/4 as far as I know

Anyone know what games Setanta are going to be showing? I might be tempted to sign up for it for a couple of months and watch the RWC on it.

I have no problem watching the games on ITV 2/3/4, I can get to them using the Other Channels setting on Sky. Although, its not going to be the same without Hook and Pope' :(

anyone know if ryle nugent(not sure if thats his name) who is on rte for the rugby games commentating will be on the radio commentating,if he is im just gona put the radio beside the tv and use that?

setanta will have the guy form the north who does magners league,i presume,so wont be watching that becuase his voice goes through his head and dont even get me started on davies

Yep Setanta have rights to all the games and are showing them all.

UTV have rights to all the games but putting alot of them on ITV2/3/4

TV3 have rights to 10 games (Irelands group plus a few more - there only getting in on the hind leg of Setanta as Irish games at RWC have to be free to air)

I'll give Setanta a go because they will be the only station giving it a fair go. I dislike a lot of ITV coverage in other sports and since I don't have ITV2/3/4 I won't get the full whack.

I'll prob check out TV3 but I expect it to be drivel like the rest of the stuff on that channel

i think TV5 will be showing a lot of games as well- i imagine mainly the french ones but i think a lot of others too

just checked on their website and they will be showing all of France's games, all the QF, SF and finals

Yeah ITV for me too. Though Stuart Barnes may drive me cracked by the end. Still, I'd imagine their coverage will be much better than the amateurish productions you'd expect from setanta and TV3.

Newstalk have the radio rights, so Ryle won't have any involvement in the RWC as far as I know.

    From Newstalk press release:
Joining the regular Newstalk 106-108 fm sports team including “Off the Ball” presenter, Eoin McDevitt and Weekend Sports presenter, Jerry O’Sullivan, will be our World Cup team including George Hook, Keith Wood and Mick Galwey.

This winning team is strengthened by the contribution of former Ireland players Noel Mannion, Moss Finn and Mick Quinn.

Our commentary team on the ground in France will be George Hook, Brendan Hennessy, Hugh Cahill and Oisin Langan, whilst Newstalk rugby reporter Simon Hick will be embedded with the Irish team for the duration of the tournament.

Still no definetive response from Setanta to see if the WC is being shown on the free channel or if it's spread across their other ones.. Not that it matters, cos after the woeful commentry on the USA-Munster game last night, I will not be watching it on that channel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭BOHSBOHS

itv showing every game on itv1 and itv4 (with one match on itv3)
most if not all the BIG pool games will be on itv1 and so will
all the quarters, semis and the final

regarding irelands games , vs. namibia and georgia : itv4 ,
    france and argentina: itv1

There's an earlier tread on this blog entitled World cup schedule that has a calender of the whole WC plus the ITV stations the matches are shown on with times etc... Worth a look.

I have only one question regarding TV coverage left and thats where are Setanta showing there games. From their website they are showing the opener on the Setanta Ireland channel (on the regular NTL package) but are they showing all of the matches on that channel or are the spread over the subscription ones?

Anybody have an idea on that one?

I think that all the matches will be on Setanta Ireland.
I don't know for definate but my reason's are twofold:

    1. They have the rights for Ireland, not UK. So obviously it makes sense to put the games on Setanta Ireland.

    2. If you've heard the ads on radio for Eircom Broadband they mention that because of their deal with Setanta you'll be able to watch all games streaming live on eircom.net. AFAIK eircom show Setanta Ireland live streams...

All matches bar four will be shown on Setanta Ireland.
The four not shown are Scotland-Portugal, Scotland-Romania, Italy-Portugal and France-Georgia.

What made them decide not to show those games?

Why would u listen to him. Ryle Nugent puts me off watching rugby on irish channels. He's such a nob head. really dislike his commentating.

I think its really stupid that any of the usual broadcasters of rugby didn't get anything of the rights. is it cuz they didn';t bother or what? dunno what i'll be watchin it on. Winty do u have the codes for the itv channels for sky. Think they'd probably be the best bet.

Well, RTE lost out to TV3 becuase of TV3's association with ITV. Had BBC of got the rights in the UK, RTE would of got the games, thanks to their close relationship.

Anyway, won't we all be in the pub?

WHAT!?!?!?!? Ryle Nugent is a f*cking idiot! He hasn'ta clue about the game past a schoolboy level! The one good thing about RTE not covering the RWC is that he won't be around to pretend to know everything!

I hate that muppet!! Not because he's got an annoying voice but because he comes across as such an arrogant muppet who likes to think he knows about every facet of the game! Very frustrating to watch a match on RTE with him commentating. I usually switch to BBC where they have a better understanding but yet biased view of the game.

They're also not showing the Wales Canada match cause it clashes with a grand prix so that will be on Setanta Sports 1 as well but the first half of the Scotland Portugal match will be on Setanta Ireland, they're cutting off to build up for the Ireland Namibia game.

Anyone know of a pub in Majorca that would show Ireland games (or indeed any WC game) as I'm gonna be there from the 8th until the 15th

I've never been, so this is probably completly wrong advise... But i'm sure there's loads of Irish pubs over there that you can see the games in... and if it comes to it, maybe an english bar?

I've given in and signed up for Setanta, I have it coming direct debit from my account so my dad can't complain. At least now I won't miss world cup matches when I'm in college and the Magners League starts tomorrow so it's good timing.

None of the games appear to be on a terrestial analogue channel as far as I can tell and as that is the only form of TV that I have available in work does anyone know if the ITV.com streaming of all the games is likely to be blocked in Ireland or is that an option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭crimsonfire

Hang on. The setanta I get on NTL cable (not digital) will not be showing the RWC games? Am i right in saying that? What a bloody rip...

No Setanta Ireland will be showing most of the games bar the ones mentioned above and possibly more depending on their scheduling.

As I mentioned in the digital thread I get crap reception on Setanta 1 and 2 so luckily for me most of the games will be on Setanta Ireland and the ones that are live on Setanta 1 and 2 are repeat on Setanta Ireland during the week.

So since I'm basically paying €18 a month for one channel can someone also tell me if the schools and Magners League rugby is shown on Setanta Ireland and not just 1&2?

    Hey all,

Does anyone know is it possible to subscribe to Setanta for one month?

I have Sky HD and Setanta isn't included in the package. If I want Setanta for the world cup is it possible to join up just for the world cup or do I have to sign up for a year?

Ryle Nugent ? Is he the fella that sounds like a cross between Julian Clary and Worzel Gummage on helium?

I have to switch off if I ever stray onto RTE and he is commentating.

British channels (ITV/BBC) biased towards British teams ? with mainly British viewers ?........ well f-me sideways !

A bit sh!te to be honest that no games on normal Irish terrestrial tv. Especially as I wont be able to Sky+ them when I'm out drowning my sorrows after England's early demise.

Sorry for upsetting you Monk, seriously.. I suppose you must be a busy man trying to outlaw lies on these boards...

Hey, if it's a lie, then I will glady remove my comment, but I don't see any proof otherwise. I'm just relaying what I heard from a friend of mine in the industry.. And we all know of TV3's links with ITV so it didn't seem like that much of an outlandish claim

But really, how come you're so touchy on the subject?? You reacted like it was a personal attack or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

What links do ITV and TV3 have? ITV sold off their share a long time ago. Your friend in the industry may want to clue up. Just to let you know, TV3 have a deal with Setanta.

This is true. To add to this, RTE could have had the deal with Setanta but they chose not to bid for it. The law with regard to certain sports being shown on terrestrial TV only concerns the world cup final and not the Irish games, TV3 chose to pay setanta for the rights to the Ireland games and one or two others also. As Mossy monk says, TV3s world cup coverage has nothing to do with ITV.

BBC has never had the rugby world cup (except maybe 1987), RTE was the only bidder for the world cup in previous tournaments...
